Morgan Stanley Q3 2026 Earnings Beat on Equities as Targets Fall
A beat that the market did not reward
Morgan Stanley's third-quarter 2026 report beat expectations on nearly every headline number, and the stock still fell. The bank earned $4.91 billion, or $3.03 per diluted share, up from $2.80 a year earlier. Net revenues rose 12% to $20.34 billion from $18.22 billion.6 Return on tangible common equity was 22.6%, the fifth quarter in a row above 20%.1 Even so, the shares dropped about 3% on the day of the report.11 Over the next 24 hours, several brokerages cut their price targets.14
Our reading is that the reaction was not a judgment on the quarter. It was a judgment on how long these results can last. The beat depended heavily on one business, equities trading. The fee lines investors watch for signs of the next phase of the capital-markets cycle came in light. Management also described a quarter that started strong and lost momentum by September.
How big was the beat?
The size of the beat depends on which consensus you use. LSEG's figures were $2.91 per share and $19.95 billion in revenue.11 Investing.com used $2.94 and $19.96 billion, which makes the beat 9 cents, or about 3.1%.5 MarketBeat's consensus was $2.93 per share.17 Benzinga cited $2.92.14 The lowest bar came from a Zacks poll of five analysts, reported by the Associated Press, which expected $2.83 per share and $19.74 billion in revenue.4 TIKR stood alone in citing a $20.11 billion revenue estimate.18
Whichever benchmark you pick, the profit beat falls between roughly 3% and 7%. That is solid, but not the kind of surprise that resets a stock. Profit also grew more slowly than revenue: net income rose 6.5% while net revenues rose 12%.2 Part of that gap came from credit costs. The bank booked a $148 million provision for credit losses, compared with nothing a year earlier.6
Equities trading did the heavy lifting
The standout was equities trading. Revenue there rose 41% to $5.8 billion, about $909 million above the StreetAccount estimate. The bank pointed to Asia as a particular source of strength.11 On the call, management credited prime brokerage financing on higher client balances, along with stronger derivatives and cash equities.5 Over nine months, equities revenue reached $17.3 billion, up 44% from a year earlier, according to Citizens JMP.16
Those gains made Institutional Securities the main driver of growth. The division brought in $10 billion, up 18% year over year.1 The rest of the unit looked weaker:
- Fixed income trading: revenue fell 7% to $2.01 billion, about $260 million short of expectations, as credit and commodities weakened.9
- Investment banking: revenue rose 2% to $2.16 billion, about $110 million below estimates.11
- Advisory: revenue rose to $887 million from $684 million, on more completed mergers.6
- Underwriting: equity underwriting fell to $525 million because a slower IPO market followed a strong prior-year period. Fixed income underwriting held up at $747 million.3
The mix explains the muted response. Equities revenue depends on client activity and volatility, so investors tend to value it below fee income. The investment banking lines, which were supposed to show a broad dealmaking recovery, fell short.
Wealth management keeps building the base
The more lasting story is in Wealth Management. The division set records with $9.07 billion in revenue, up about 10%. It also gathered $232 billion in net new assets and $80.5 billion in fee-based flows.8 Pretax profit was a record $2.8 billion, and the pretax margin was 30.4%.1 Asset management fees in the unit rose 16% to $5.5 billion.5 One analysis put the division's share of firm revenue at about 44.6%.10
The net new assets figure needs a caveat. Just over half of it came from IPO-related flows.7 That makes it hard to treat the record as a new run rate, and several outlets flagged sustainability as the open question.13 For comparison, the prior quarter brought in $148 billion.10 Our view is that the real test of organic momentum is whether flows stay well above that level once the IPO money is gone.
The bank's balance sheet also shifted toward banking. Deposits rose nearly $30 billion from the prior quarter to $465 billion, and lending balances grew $5 billion. Net interest income dipped slightly to $2.2 billion as the mix changed.3 Total client assets across Wealth and Investment Management rose nearly $400 billion to $10.5 trillion.1
Investment Management was the weakest segment. Revenue fell to $1.46 billion from $1.65 billion because of a carried-interest reversal.6 Management tied the reversal mainly to two investments in one private fund.3
A quarter that started fast and ended slow
Management described two different halves of the quarter. AI-related investment and economic growth kept activity strong through July and August. Then rising energy prices and interest rates weighed on markets in September.3 One account linked the September slowdown to tensions in the Middle East as well as higher global rates.7 CEO Ted Pick said the economy is being pulled in two directions: up by the AI build-out and down by geopolitical conflict.11 He also said he was "cautiously optimistic" about the fourth quarter.11
Revenue fell about 5% from what Citizens JMP called an "exceptional" second quarter.16 In that quarter the bank reported $21.35 billion in revenue and $3.46 per share.15 Coming after that, the third quarter reads as a cooling-off, which may explain why strong year-over-year growth did not lift the stock.
Analysts trim targets despite the beat
Analysts kept their ratings but lowered their price targets. After the report, Benzinga listed these changes:14
| Firm | Rating | Old target | New target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keefe, Bruyette & Woods | Outperform | $250 | $230 |
| Evercore ISI | Outperform | $215 | $205 |
| Wells Fargo | Equal-Weight | $223 | $217 |
| TD Cowen | Hold | $210 | $205 |
| RBC Capital | Sector Perform | $243 | $195 |
RBC's cut was the largest. A separate Benzinga report credited a similar $210-to-$205 cut to Piper Sandler, using the same analyst name. That leaves some doubt in the coverage about which firm made the move.16
Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo explained his reasoning in the most detail. He called the quarter "good, but not great."11 He trimmed his earnings-per-share estimates to:
- $13.22 for 2026
- $14.35 for 2027, down 15 cents
- $15.05 for 2028, down 55 cents
He now expects flat equity capital markets revenue and slightly lower trading revenue in later years. His $217 target equals 15 times his 2027 estimate. We think this is the clearest explanation of the gap between the beat and the target cuts. Analysts are reducing the earnings they expect from capital markets in future years, even as the current quarter comes in ahead.
Some cuts came before the report:
- BMO lowered its target from $250 to $215 on October 6 and kept an outperform rating.15
- UBS went from $260 to $236.17
- Citigroup went from $235 to $210.17
Not every analyst grew more cautious. Citizens JMP said management's more constructive outlook for 2027 net interest income gave it "a higher view of the earnings base."16 Piper Sandler argued that investors value Morgan Stanley for steady earnings, not trading blowouts like Goldman Sachs's.16
Valuation and what comes next
The stock closed at $181.52 on October 14. That is roughly 22% below its July 15 high of $232.25.13 S&P Global Market Intelligence tracks 26 analysts:
- 11 have positive ratings, 14 say hold, and one is negative.
- The average 12-month target is $222.14, about 22% above the close.13
- Individual targets run from $184 to $262.13
MarketBeat's average target is a little lower, at $219.43.17 Both averages largely reflect targets set before the report, so they are likely to come down as revisions roll in.13
The bank has plenty of capital. Its standardized CET1 ratio was 14.9%3, management cited about 300 basis points of excess capital1, and it bought back $1.5 billion of stock during the quarter.3 It also paid a $1.15 quarterly dividend8 and has a $20 billion repurchase authorization approved in June.15
Our reading is that the quarter showed the strategy working. Wealth Management is growing its fee base, and the trading desk captured volatility well. The shares are not being priced on this quarter, though. They are being priced on whether underwriting and fixed income recover, whether IPO-driven inflows prove to be one-off, and where rates go. Until fourth-quarter results answer those questions, a beat-and-fall pattern like this one looks likely to continue.
