ASML Q3 Earnings Beat as AI Demand Outruns Supply Through 2028
A record quarter and a warning about supply
ASML's third quarter of 2026 was the strongest in its history. It also showed that the main limit on the company's growth now sits inside its own factories. The Dutch maker of lithography machines reported total net sales of €11.66 billion on October 14. That was up from €9.33 billion in the second quarter. Gross margin rose to 57.5% from 54.0%, and net income reached €4.96 billion, or €12.95 per share.1 Revenue landed toward the top of the company's €11.0 billion to €12.0 billion guidance range, and the margin beat the guided 55% to 57% band.6
The quarterly figures are only half the story. Chief executive Christophe Fouquet said order momentum had grown every quarter this year. He added that ASML's currently planned supply for 2027 and 2028 will fall short of what customers want, so the company is looking at ways to add 2028 capacity beyond the 30% increase it had already announced.1 Most coverage treats this as the key line from the report, and that is the right reading. The question for ASML has moved from whether demand will hold to whether it can build machines fast enough.
Inside the numbers
Sales rose about 25% from the second quarter. Net income grew about 70% over the same period, which shows how much operating leverage the business has once volumes climb.3 ASML sold 121 lithography systems, 113 new and 8 used, up from 91 in the second quarter.3 Net system sales came to €8.4 billion. EUV accounted for €4.1 billion, including one High-NA EUV system, and non-EUV tools for €4.3 billion. Logic customers took 54% of system sales and memory 46%.4
The biggest surprise came from the installed base. Installed Base Management, the service and upgrade business, brought in €3.3 billion, nearly €0.4 billion above guidance. Management credited strong demand for productivity upgrades on both EUV and DUV tools.4 Those upgrades carry very high margins, and the company said they were the main reason gross margin beat its forecast.4 Executives on the call described chipmakers buying upgrades to add output without building whole new fabs.5 That points to customers so short of capacity that they are squeezing more out of the tools they already have.
The headline profit needs one adjustment. Net income included about €0.5 billion from a higher valuation of ASML's first investment in Mistral AI.4 Without that gain, net income would have been closer to €4.5 billion. That is still a large jump from the prior quarter, but a careful reader should know that roughly a tenth of the bottom line did not come from selling machines or services.
Cash flow was the most striking balance-sheet figure. ASML reported €11.4 billion of free cash flow in the quarter, which it tied to customer down payments on orders.4 Cash and short-term investments ended the quarter at €12.7 billion, even after about €4.1 billion of share buybacks. The company also declared a €1.88 interim dividend, payable on November 4.9
How the beat measured up
Every outlet reported an earnings beat. They did not agree on its size. One account put adjusted EPS at $14.65 against a $12.13 consensus, a beat of about 21%, while revenue of $13.21 billion beat a $13.16 billion forecast by less than half a percent.5 Another tally put EPS at $14.89 against $12.17 and revenue growth at about 55% year over year.18 Before the report, TipRanks put the consensus at $12.14 on $13.16 billion of revenue.20 A different preview cited a consensus of about $10.66 from 17 analysts, a figure it said sat below the low end of ASML's own guidance.16
These differences mostly reflect which analyst sample was used and how euros were converted to dollars. The overall picture is the same in each case. The profit beat was large, helped by the margin and the Mistral gain. The revenue beat was small, because ASML had guided closely and analysts had followed that guidance. Before the report, forecasters already expected revenue of about €11.6 billion to €11.8 billion.12 The actual figure fell inside that range.
Guidance: a much bigger fourth quarter
ASML expects fourth-quarter sales of €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion at a gross margin of about 57%.2 It now sees full-year 2026 sales of €44 billion to €45 billion at a gross margin of about 56%, narrowing its earlier €43 billion to €45 billion range by lifting the bottom.6 Chief financial officer Roger Dassen put full-year growth at about 36% over 2025. He said EUV is driving most of it, with that business growing more than 45% this year.5 Memory is another driver, as more DRAM makers use EUV on advanced nodes. ASML still expects China to make up about 20% of 2026 sales.4
Some reports got the guidance wrong. One described the full-year range as €43 billion to €45 billion with a 54% to 56% margin, which matches the earlier outlook rather than the new one.10 Another gave fourth-quarter guidance as €14.8 billion to €16.0 billion.19 ASML's own release sets the range at €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion, and that is the figure investors should use.2 At the midpoint, fourth-quarter sales would rise roughly a quarter from the third. One analysis called that remarkable for a company of ASML's size.3
ASML has also changed how it discloses demand. Since the start of 2026 it no longer publishes quarterly order bookings, which investors once used as their main guide to future business.6 That puts more weight on qualitative signals. Fouquet said some customers now want to place orders for 2029 and 2030.5 Dassen said 30% more capacity in 2027 and another 30% in 2028 would not be enough to meet demand.5
Why the stock fell anyway
The market did not reward the record. ASML's US-listed shares closed down 3.94% at $1,650 on results day.11 They slipped a little further the next day, trading near $1,648.18 Options traders had priced in a move of about 6% in either direction, well above the stock's average post-earnings move of 2.38% over the prior four quarters.20 The actual drop was about two-thirds of that.
Three factors explain the selloff. The first is valuation. The stock trades at a P/E ratio of about 51 to 55 depending on the data provider, and one analysis judged it overvalued against its estimate of fair value.518 The second is timing. Even before the report, ASML shares had gained about 65% this year, though they trailed the broader chip index.16 Investors buying on that run wanted more than a narrow revenue beat. The third is the wider market. On the day after the results, chip stocks fell on doubts about AI spending, and AMD dropped 5.7%.13 ASML's growth depends on that same AI spending.
In my view, the selloff says more about market positioning than about the business. A shortfall in supply is a good problem when customers are paying deposits years ahead, and the €11.4 billion of free cash flow shows those deposits are real money.4 One analysis noted, however, that the bull case rests almost entirely on AI-related capital spending staying at today's pace, and that export controls on China remain a risk ASML does not quantify.3
Price targets: small cuts, high conviction
Analysts' reactions were steady rather than excited. JPMorgan cut its target to $2,350 from $2,400 and kept an overweight rating, a target about 42.6% above the prior close.18 Before the report, Evercore ISI had trimmed its target to €1,950 from €2,000.13 UBS and Berenberg reiterated buy ratings, and another firm kept a €1,700 target and buy rating, citing strong execution.13 Jefferies stayed at hold.13 Shortly before the results, Bank of America raised its target to $2,865.9 from $2,748.2. It also lifted its 2028 revenue estimate to €76.5 billion.20
The average target depends on the provider. MarketBeat's consensus is $2,079.12 with a "Moderate Buy" rating, based on 22 buy-or-better ratings, two holds and three sells.18 Stock Analysis puts the average among 41 analysts at $2,114.85, about 28% above the closing price, with a "Strong Buy" consensus.11 TipRanks uses a smaller set of recent targets and gets $2,460.08, ranging from $2,100 to $2,859.15 Full-year EPS estimates sit around $43.70.18 Erste Group cut its 2026 forecast to $44.01 shortly before the report but sees $60.69 for 2027.17
The trims to price targets so far are small, and they look more like adjustments for valuation and currency than any change of view. None of the coverage reports an analyst arguing that demand is weakening. The open question is how quickly ASML can expand capacity, and whether AI spending lasts long enough to fill it. The quarter suggests that customers are committing money and orders well ahead of time, which is a strong signal for the next two years.
