IBIT Bitcoin ETF Pulls $665M in One Day as BTC Stalls Near $83K
A single fund reverses a losing month
On Monday, October 19, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) took in $665.16 million in net new money. According to SoSoValue data, that is the fund's biggest one-day inflow since October 7, 2025.2 All U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs together posted $526.6 million in net inflows that day. Redemptions at Fidelity's and Grayscale's funds cancelled out part of IBIT's gain.1 The per-fund data shows how lopsided the day was. Fidelity's FBTC lost $83.6 million and Grayscale's GBTC lost $54.9 million. Every other U.S. spot bitcoin product had zero net flows.13 IBIT was the only one of the 12 U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs with money coming in.9
One outlet said the fund's inflow and the industry total can't be cleanly matched because IBIT's figure is larger than the total.7 The numbers actually add up. Take IBIT's $665.2 million, subtract the FBTC and GBTC outflows, and you get almost exactly the $526.6 million total reported by several outlets.1310 IBIT's number is bigger than the total because other funds lost money, not because the data is wrong.
The inflow came after weeks of steady outflows. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs lost about $679 million from October 5 to 9 and another $228 million from October 12 to 16.6 IBIT's previous inflow above $600 million this year was about $648 million on January 14.6 For comparison, the October 2025 day it now trails was much larger: about $899.4 million.7 For the ETF group as a whole, Monday was the biggest day since late September. One report dates the previous larger day to September 22.1018
Momentum faded the next day
The buying slowed sharply on Tuesday. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs took in just $23.16 million on October 20, roughly 96% less than Monday. IBIT added $29.86 million of that.14 Even with Monday's surge, spot bitcoin funds were still about $88 million in the red for October.18 That puts the month on course to break a two-month streak of strong inflows: about $3.5 billion in August and $2.6 billion in September.11
For that reason, one big day doesn't show a broad return of institutional money. It shows a large amount of money arriving through a single fund. IBIT's grip on the category supports that view. By early October it held more than 60% of all U.S. spot bitcoin ETF assets.12 On October 20 its net assets were $66.89 billion, compared with $14.54 billion at FBTC and $10.33 billion at GBTC.14 Fees likely help explain the gap. IBIT charges 0.25% a year. GBTC charges 1.50% and has lost close to $28 billion to outflows since launch.16
Price stuck in a range
The price response was small. Bitcoin stayed between $82,000 and $83,000 as traders worried that more interest-rate hikes could hurt risky assets.2 Zeus Research analyst Dominick John said the buying showed institutional demand holding up. He added that the steady resistance suggests sellers were absorbing the ETF purchases.2 Bitcoin had moved up to about $84,546 by October 21.18
Analysts mostly agreed on why the money came in, though none claimed to be certain. Presto Research's Min Jung said the exact cause was unclear. Her view is that investors may be setting up a "catch-up trade": other risk assets are near record highs while bitcoin has gone sideways without any crypto-specific trigger.2 She also said volatility is likely to continue until the Federal Reserve's rate path is clearer. In her view, a lasting breakout would need both monetary clarity and more appetite for risk from institutions.3 Bitcoin is still about 32% below its October 2025 peak.20 Every European bitcoin ETP showed a negative 12-month return through early October.12 So the catch-up argument rests on a real gap in performance.
Another explanation deserves attention. Earlier in October, one analysis argued that hedge funds' basis and "debasement" trades account for part of recent ETF inflows. It also noted that financial advisers held 58% of the professionally owned share of ETF assets in the first quarter.20 If some of Monday's money was hedged basis positioning rather than outright bets on a higher price, that would help explain why the inflow did so little to the price.
BlackRock adds a product for cautious investors
On the same day, BlackRock filed for a third bitcoin-linked ETF, the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, proposed ticker PBIT.9 The fund would not hold bitcoin or IBIT shares. Instead it would trade options on IBIT across three overlapping tranches. Each tranche aims to cap the first losses at about 10%, and the fund pays for that protection by giving up some upside.9 The filing warns that investors can still lose more than 10%. It also gives no fee, exchange or launch date.9 Under the rule that covers new fund series, the registration would typically take effect about 75 days after filing, around January 2, 2027.9
The two events together look like a deliberate product strategy. BlackRock now offers IBIT for full exposure, a covered-call income fund launched in June, and PBIT for investors who want downside protection.9 Each one widens the range of investors who can hold bitcoin through a familiar structure. PBIT is organized under the Investment Company Act, the framework many fiduciaries already know.9 IBIT is increasingly the base asset for a whole set of products, not just a spot fund.
Regulators fill the gap Congress left
The inflow also landed in a confusing policy environment. On September 15, the Senate voted 49–50 on cloture for the CLARITY Act, well short of the 60 votes needed, which stalled the most complete U.S. crypto market-structure bill so far.31 Coverage disagrees on how final this is. Some law firms say the bill will probably have to be reintroduced after the new Congress starts in January 2027.39 Others note that Senator Tillis filed a motion to reconsider that keeps the bill alive, and House Financial Services Chair French Hill still hopes to pass it in the lame-duck session.3133 The more likely result is that nothing passes this year. Reporting identifies the main obstacles as ethics rules for officials who hold crypto and the question of stablecoin yield, not the basic split of authority between the SEC and CFTC.3137
Regulators are moving ahead without Congress. On October 1, the SEC proposed crypto custody rules for investment advisers and regulated funds. On October 5, the CFTC published an early rulemaking notice for Regulation CTX and Regulation CAM, with comments due December 14.33 CFTC Chair Michael Selig has said the agency will build a market structure "with or without" legislation.37 Bitcoin briefly rose above $86,000 in early October as traders reacted to the CFTC and SEC proposals.17 The SEC custody proposal matters most for ETF flows, because adviser custody rules affect how easily wealth managers can hold crypto.
Treasury companies lose ground to ETFs
The ETF numbers look strong next to the struggles of bitcoin treasury companies, which compete with ETFs to offer investors bitcoin exposure. Strategy holds about 848,517 BTC. Yahoo Finance reports that its weekly bitcoin purchases have slowed to roughly $20 million to $30 million, while it spends close to $200 million a week buying back its STRC preferred stock. On October 19 it raised its buyback limit to $3 billion.23
Strategy's valuation depends on which measure you use. On the traditional basic measure, Yahoo Finance put its mNAV, the ratio of its market value to its bitcoin holdings, at 0.87 in October. The company's own revised measure showed 1.12x the same day.23 An independent tracker showed 1.10x.21 A metric that can show either a discount or a premium depending on the method tells investors less than it seems to.
Across the sector, the median treasury company mNAV in October was 1.22x, and 26 of 56 companies traded below the value of their bitcoin.25 Metaplanet reported a loss of about $605 million, and its holdings are around 37% below its average purchase cost.26 MSCI has finalized a rule that will remove companies whose balance sheets are dominated by a single asset from its investable indexes starting November 30. The list of affected companies is due November 11, and removal would force index funds to sell.23 There are exceptions. Strive added 1,223 BTC, taking its holdings past $3 billion.1
Analysis: what Monday shows
Monday's inflow does not signal the start of a rally. It shows where big money now prefers to hold bitcoin. When investors buy, they increasingly choose the largest, most liquid and cheapest regulated fund, not treasury company stocks whose premiums have shrunk and now face an index deadline. Congress has stalled, so the SEC and CFTC are setting the rules, and BlackRock is designing products for the investors those rules will cover. The 96% drop on Tuesday is a reminder not to read too much into one day.14 The longer-term pattern is clear: demand for bitcoin exposure is consolidating in IBIT.
