Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of making websites, content, and brands discoverable through search. It spans technical work like site architecture and crawlability, editorial work like creating genuinely useful content, and reputation signals such as links and mentions from trusted sources. For decades the goal was simple to state, if hard to achieve: rank well and earn the click.

That goal is being rewritten. Search results increasingly answer questions directly through AI-generated summaries and other on-page features, so many queries end without a visit to any website. Visibility now depends not only on ranking but on being cited, quoted, or recommended by AI systems. New labels have emerged for this work, including answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO). They come with ongoing debate over whether they represent a new discipline or simply SEO under another name.

At the same time, search platforms keep refining their quality systems. They target spam and low-value, mass-produced content, including material churned out with generative AI. The economics are shifting too. As AI answers draw on publisher content, questions about compensation, licensing, and fair value exchange are moving to the center of the industry.
