The robots are back, built from plastic bricks
Daft Punk broke up in 2021, but that has not stopped the group from making new things. On October 22, the Lego Group and the French electronic duo announced a partnership. Its first product is an official set based on the pyramid stage from the Alive 2007 tour.216 The companies describe a deal that covers product, content and brand experiences, so the pyramid is the opening move rather than the whole story.1216
The announcement followed the duo's usual playbook. On October 21, viewers of the fictional radio stream "Daft Punk – WDPK 83.7" saw a 30-second clip of a glowing red Lego brick with no explanation.2 Seen from behind, the brick's three inner tubes looked like speaker woofers, which hinted at the music connection before anything was confirmed.5 The full reveal arrived the next day as a 48-second film. In it, minifigure versions of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, helmets included, follow a holographic red brick across a desert until a Lego console builds itself around them.1216
The soundtrack choices matter. The film uses "Voyager" from 2001's Discovery and the title track of 2005's Human After All.1718 MusicRadar reports that the duo picked the tracks together with Lego's team.7 The campaign tagline, "Builders After All," plays on the second song's title.17
From lockdown hobby to licensed product
The pyramid set did not start in a Lego design studio. Patrick Harboun and his son, who live in Luxembourg and post as "RobotRock," built the first version at home during the pandemic lockdown.117 According to al.com, which cites earlier EDM.com reporting, the boy was eight when he made an early prototype from bricks the family already owned. His father, who has an engineering background, then expanded the design digitally.6 TechEBlog names the son as Sol.3
The fan model goes well beyond the pyramid's outline. Engadget says it uses about 2,000 pieces and has a motorised, rotating box of transparent bricks inside to mimic the original light show.14 Toy People and al.com describe the same mechanism, along with hanging lights and gold and silver helmeted minifigures standing on top of the stage.68 TechEBlog adds that getting the pyramid's angles right with standard bricks was especially difficult.3 Lego has said clearly that the published images show the fan model, not the product that will reach shops.116 Engadget reports that Lego's designers are working with Harboun on the final version.14
Harboun said the project began as a creative escape he shared with his son because they both loved Daft Punk and Lego. He added that the two "never dared imagine it would take off in this way."1117
Where the timeline gets fuzzy
Most outlets agree on the basic sequence. The model won the grand prize in Lego Ideas' "Music to Our Ears" challenge in 2020, later reached the 10,000 supporters needed for an official review, and has now been approved for development.21018 A few reports disagree. The Main Street Mouse dates the contest win to 2025, and DJ Mag calls it a 2024 proposal.116 Given how many outlets cite 2020, those look like errors.
DesignRush offers the most useful explanation of the gap between that win and this week's news. It reports that Lego chose a Fender Stratocaster from the 2020 challenge for production, which left the Daft Punk pyramid without a set. The fan model only reached 10,000 supporters in 2025.4 The same report cites creative director Cédric Hervet, speaking to Wallpaper*, saying Daft Punk had approached Lego years earlier but the timing probably wasn't right. It also says Lego turned down two earlier Daft Punk Ideas projects that passed 10,000 supporters, one in 2015 and one in 2023.4
The release date is also unclear. Rolling Stone's headline framing suggests the set will arrive in 2027.11 Most other outlets, including Engadget, MusicRadar and JamBase, say only that more information is coming in 2027.14710 Several reports state plainly that Lego has not announced a price, piece count or release date.6818 The safest reading is that 2027 is when the partnership's next phase begins, and that a shelf date has not been promised.
Why the pyramid is the right first product
Hervet called the pyramid one of the most recognisable parts of Daft Punk's visual world, and said it was fitting for a fan-made design to lead the partnership.1112 He also said fans have always been part of the duo's story.210 That is the expected press-release line, but the history supports it.
On the Alive tour, the duo played inside a huge lit-up pyramid surrounded by synchronised lights and screens. That structure became so closely tied to the tour that people still recognise it almost two decades later. AudioFuzz goes further, arguing that the pyramid helped change what live electronic shows could be, at a time when many sets still meant a fairly plain DJ booth.5 That is a historical claim more than a reported fact, but it explains why fans backed this model in such numbers. Lego is not creating a new image for merchandise. It is reproducing something the audience already treats as part of music history.5
The shape suits the medium too. Hard edges, a modular look and glowing surfaces are what make ambitious Lego builds appealing. Lego's own pitch leans on shared history. Chief product and marketing officer Julia Goldin said both brands "inspire generations" and called the announcement "just the beginning of a bigger journey."1114
Not the first Lego robots, and not a reunion
Coverage disagrees on one notable point. Happy Mag says this deal brings the robots into minifigure form for the first time.9 Variety, NME and Engadget all point out that the duo already appeared as minifigures in Piece by Piece, Pharrell Williams' 2024 Lego-animated documentary, where they performed "Get Lucky."121415 What is new is that this is official, licensed Daft Punk Lego, not a cameo in another artist's project.
Fans should also not read the partnership as a step toward a reunion. NME notes that Bangalter has said he was "relieved" by how the band ended. Earlier this year, when the duo marked five years since the split with a new "Human After All" video, he ruled out getting back together.15 NME also reports claims that the duo turned down an offer to score GTA 6.15 AudioFuzz puts it most simply: the deal lets Daft Punk's world keep growing without the two men making music together.5
The legacy business, brick by brick
The Lego deal fits a clear pattern. Hit Channel places it alongside recent anniversary reissues of Homework and Random Access Memories.18 DesignRush notes that it lands in the year Discovery turned 25, and that The Weeknd's "Starboy," featuring Daft Punk, is fourth on Spotify's all-time most-streamed list.4 Early interest is high. Al.com counted more than 700,000 views on the duo's announcement post on X by October 23.6
Our reading is that this is a well-planned legacy move, and that it works because it relies on what made Daft Punk distinctive in the first place. The duo spent their career hiding behind helmets. Turning themselves into characters made them suited to toys long before anyone said so. Their output always included films, animation and staged mystery, from Interstella 5555 to Electroma, so a multi-year brand partnership feels like a natural extension.5
The main criticism belongs to Lego. DesignRush argues that winning a fan vote should have started licensing talks sooner, rather than leaving the pyramid waiting six years.4 That is a fair point. Fans also have other wishes: DJ Mag reports that a proposal for the Interstella 5555 Guitarship went onto Lego Ideas this month, after earlier pitches for Bangalter's helmet and a "Get Lucky" sunset stage.16 If the pyramid sells well, the partnership's promise of "surprising events and content" may lead to some of those designs being made too.1215
