Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization is the practice of making content discoverable, understandable, and citable by AI-driven systems that answer questions directly instead of returning a list of links. Traditional search engine optimization focused on ranking pages. AEO is concerned with whether a brand, publisher, or product appears inside a generated answer, whether that answer is an AI summary above search results, a chatbot response, or an assistant drawing on many sources. Related labels such as generative engine optimization (GEO) and "AI SEO" describe overlapping ideas, and the lines between them remain contested.

Why it matters now

AI-generated summaries increasingly sit above or in place of conventional results, even for queries where people are looking for a specific company. That changes how traffic reaches websites, how visibility is measured, and how value is shared between platforms and the publishers whose work feeds those answers. The evidence is uneven, though. Claims of rapid growth sit alongside mixed signals on budgets and referral traffic, and search platforms send ambiguous messages about which techniques actually matter.
