A maintenance release for Vision Pro

Apple released visionOS 27.2 for Apple Vision Pro on Monday, October 26. It is the first substantial point update to the operating system since visionOS 27 shipped in September.1112 Owners can install it from Settings > General > Software Update. They have to take the headset off while it installs, and the EyeSight display on the front shows a progress bar.119 People with automatic updates turned on should get it within a few days, and anyone who already installed last week's release candidate doesn't need to do anything.56

The final build is 24N120. The release candidate Apple seeded on October 19 was 24N118.4 The update arrived alongside iOS 27.2, macOS Golden Gate 27.2, watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2 and HomePod Software 27.2.117

Coverage agrees that this is a small update. AppleInsider said bug fixes and performance improvements are essentially all Vision Pro owners get, and that none of the changes are specific to the headset.5 TUAW called it routine maintenance focused on reliability rather than new capabilities.3 Apple's own summary, quoted by several outlets, says the update provides bug fixes and security updates.119 A Czech outlet noted that Vision Pro owners got the fewest new features of any device in this round of updates.7

That consensus is accurate, but it undersells the release a little. The full release notes include several features that matter more on a headset than the "bug fixes only" framing suggests.

What's actually new

The biggest change for most users is wider language support for Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant Apple introduced across its platforms with the OS 27 cycle. Coverage disagrees on exactly which languages were added. AppleInsider, TUAW, Macerkopf and a French Apple site list French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.53910 iClarified's copy of the visionOS release notes lists only French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, and says Siri AI is still unavailable in mainland China.15 Both versions agree that French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish users gain access. Portuguese is the one language whose status on Vision Pro is unclear. Macerkopf also reports that Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese support for Siri AI should arrive by the end of the year.9

Beyond languages, the release notes describe several Siri controls. A new Excluded Apps setting lets users decide in one place which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access. A granular text selection feature lets users copy just part of a Siri response.15 On a device where text is selected by looking and pinching, picking out part of an answer is a real usability gain, even though Apple didn't present it that way.

The update also adds support for SynthID watermarking in Photos and Image Playground. This helps identify images that were created or edited with generative tools.14 FaceTime now lets users add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call.15

For users in the European Union, App Tracking Transparency prompts will now reappear at least once a year, so people are reminded to review their tracking choices.39

Russian XR outlet Holographica focused on the developer side. It reported that the release fixes three bugs in Xcode's StoreKit testing tools, including incorrect resets of introductory-offer eligibility after clearing transaction history and missing notifications when a user's store region changes. The same report says one Siri issue remains: if a user turns off ChatGPT integration and then asks Siri to use it, the assistant may stop responding. Apple's suggested workaround is to force-quit Siri and turn ChatGPT integration back on.

Why there was no visionOS 27.1

Some Vision Pro owners will notice that the version jumped from 27.0.1 to 27.2. Several outlets explain that Apple used the 27.1 number only for the iPhone Duo, so every other platform went straight to 27.2.539 Vision Pro owners haven't missed an update. Before this release, the most recent public version was 27.0.1, a security-fix update released on September 28.1

The numbering also says something about priorities. AppleInsider argued directly that Vision Pro isn't a priority while Apple launches many other products over the next few weeks.5 The cluster of 27.2 releases supports that view. Alongside the headset update, macOS got changes that AppleInsider says lay groundwork for touch-screen Macs, tvOS gained surround sound across four HomePods, and HomePod software added new lighting effects and the option to act as a Mac's default speaker.7

The bigger features came in September

The real platform work for this cycle shipped with visionOS 27 in September. Apple's support notes describe Siri AI on Vision Pro as an assistant that stays pinned wherever you place it in your space. You can talk to it just by looking at it, without saying "Hey Siri." It also supports Visual Intelligence questions about physical objects in the room.1 On M5 Vision Pro models, a new voice experience runs on on-device models.1

The spatial features in that release are what developers and enthusiasts care most about:

  • Panoramas can be turned into spatial scenes and used as personal Environments.
  • Windows in Safari, Freeform and Apple TV Multiview can now curve.
  • Spatial Preview lets users pull 3D models from Mac Virtual Display into their space at true scale, with edits reflected in real time.
  • Quick Look lets users change materials, view wireframes and add annotations to 3D models.
  • Safari can render fully immersive 360-degree web environments.1

Apple also said the headset connects to Wi-Fi up to three times faster after powering on, and added a high-quality recording mode that captures the unfoveated view in 4K for up to three minutes.18

AppleInsider's coverage of visionOS 27 mentioned physical object tracking and wider support for spatial accessories, which could lead to more controllers and tracked objects for the headset.2 The same outlet said the platform still has a lot of growing up to do, and that the AI-heavy OS 27 cycle left Vision Pro's biggest problem unsolved.2

Seen against that baseline, visionOS 27.2 looks like Apple's normal pattern: the major release in September carries the spatial computing features, and the point updates mostly bring shared Apple Intelligence improvements to every platform. AppleInsider says the same pattern held through visionOS 26.5 Version history shows that the visionOS 26 cycle had point releases about every one to three months, from 26.1 in November 2025 to 26.6.1 in August 2026.

Apps and content still lag behind the software

The app catalog is still the main question for spatial computing. visionOS can run compatible iPhone and iPad apps in floating windows, and Apple says more than a million of them are available. But some major entertainment apps, including Netflix and Spotify, still haven't made their apps available on the headset. A French outlet captured the problem with a related headline saying the M5 Vision Pro has power that is still waiting for apps.10

Apple has been filling the gap with its own content. Earlier this month it announced Remnants, an immersive horror film shot in the Apple Immersive Video format: 8K, 3D, a 180-degree field of view and Spatial Audio. It was released only on Vision Pro on October 16.11 Exclusive content like this gives existing owners a reason to keep using the headset, which matters when a point update has so little that is specific to Vision Pro.

Reader comments on the MacRumors announcement show both sides. One commenter joked that the post was a reminder Apple even makes the Vision Pro. Another said they use it almost daily for watching video and as a virtual Mac display.11 That split matches what's known about the product: a small, committed user base that gets a lot out of it, and a wider audience that has largely stopped paying attention.

The hardware outlook

The hardware context helps explain why this release is so modest. visionOS 27 supports both the original M2 Vision Pro and the M5 model.6 Looking further out, MacRumors summarized a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. It says Apple is weighing four concepts for a "completely revamped" Vision Pro, codenamed N224, including designs that move internal components off the headset. The device likely won't arrive before late 2028 or early 2029.11 Holographica's related coverage also points to reports of Apple cutting dozens of jobs on its virtual reality team.

If that timeline holds, Vision Pro owners will be using today's hardware for at least two more years. During that time, the software will mostly benefit from features built for Apple's other devices, such as Siri AI, Apple Intelligence tools and privacy controls. That isn't necessarily bad. Siri AI is arguably more useful on a headset you control with your eyes and voice than on a phone, and features like Excluded Apps, granular text selection and FaceTime interpreter support all work well with how visionOS is used.

The overall picture is clear, though. visionOS 27.2 is a worthwhile update, especially for French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish speakers and for anyone who relies on Siri on the headset. It doesn't advance spatial computing in any meaningful way. For now, Apple is keeping Vision Pro on the same update schedule as its other platforms while it decides what the next headset should be.
