visionOS 27.2 Adds Siri AI Tweaks as Apple Shifts to Smart Glasses
A quiet update for a quiet product
On Monday, October 26, Apple released visionOS 27.2 for the Apple Vision Pro. It is the first major update to the visionOS 27 operating system.1 Owners can install it from the General section of the Settings app under Software Update. They have to take the headset off while it installs, and the EyeSight display on the front shows a progress bar.1 The release followed several weeks of developer and public betas. visionOS 27 itself shipped on September 14 alongside iOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and tvOS 27.3
There was no visionOS 27.1. Apple used the 27.1 number only for the iPhone Duo, and every other platform went straight to 27.2.2 That numbering detail points to the main story of this release cycle: Apple's attention is on other products, and the Vision Pro is not one of them.
What is actually in the update
Coverage of the update doesn't fully agree, and the gap is worth explaining. MacRumors reported that Apple's release notes describe bug fixes and security updates.1 AppleInsider said the update has no features specific to the Vision Pro, and that the changes mostly come from the rest of Apple's operating systems.2 It also argued that the Vision Pro isn't a priority while Apple launches many other products over the next few weeks.2
The full release notes, published by iClarified, list more than that. Siri AI gets a setting called Excluded Apps, which lets users choose in one place which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access.7 Users can also select and copy just part of a Siri response.7 Siri AI now works in more languages, including French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, though it still isn't available in mainland China.7 Outside of Siri, the update supports SynthID watermarking in Photos and Image Playground, which helps show whether an image was made or edited with generative tools.7 FaceTime calls can now include a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner.7
The reports differ in small ways. AppleInsider listed Portuguese among the new Siri AI languages.2 The visionOS notes iClarified published don't include it, even though the watchOS 27.2 notes do.67 AppleInsider also mentioned that EU users will see the App Tracking Transparency prompt at least once a year.2
The fairest reading is that both descriptions are correct. visionOS 27.2 does add features, but almost none of them are about spatial computing. The Siri changes, the SynthID support and the FaceTime accessibility feature are shared across Apple's platforms. The FaceTime feature builds on an interpreter API Apple announced earlier as part of visionOS 27.15 Nothing in the update is designed specifically for a headset.
The rest of the 27.2 releases make the contrast clearer. tvOS 27.2 adds four-speaker surround sound with HomePod and HomePod mini 2 speakers.6 watchOS 27.2 brings faster Siri AI responses and lets Siri recall past conversations.6 macOS 27.2 reportedly includes groundwork for touch-screen Macs.2 Next to those, the visionOS update looks like maintenance.
The context: a headset Apple has deprioritized
The light update makes more sense alongside what has been reported about Apple's plans for the Vision Pro over the past six months.
In April, MacRumors reported that Apple had mostly given up on the Vision Pro after the M5 refresh in October 2025 failed to revive demand.20 That refresh added a 120Hz refresh rate, 10 percent more rendered pixels and roughly 30 more minutes of battery life, but kept the $3,499 price and sold poorly.20 According to the same report, the Vision Pro team was split up across Apple, and some members moved to Siri, which is now led by former Vision Pro chief Mike Rockwell.20 Two months later, Apple raised the price to $3,699, citing the global memory shortage.15
In June, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said incoming CEO John Ternus had stopped work on both a Vision Pro 2 and the lighter, cheaper Vision Air.18 Kuo said Apple's head-worn roadmap now consists of two pairs of glasses: a competitor to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses in 2027, and display-equipped AR glasses using optical waveguides in 2029.18
Where the reporting diverges on Vision Pro's future
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman doesn't think the headset is entirely finished. In late September he reported that Apple's Vision team is looking at four concepts for a "completely revamped" headset codenamed N224, which probably wouldn't ship before late 2028 or early 2029.116 One concept moves some components into a separate external puck. Some senior staff reportedly dislike that idea because the current tethered battery is already a frequent complaint, and they would prefer an all-in-one design.1116 Making a standalone headset lighter and cheaper without losing capability is described as a major engineering problem.1114
Gurman also described N224 as being on "life support," and said it could be canceled before it ever reaches customers.17 Engineers from other headset projects have reportedly been moved onto smart glasses, and the cheaper N100 "Vision Air" was shelved.17 Publicly, Ternus has said the Vision Pro has a "very bright future."17
So the main disagreement is between Kuo and Gurman. Kuo says no new headset is in development. Gurman says one is still being explored but is at serious risk.15 Both agree on the direction Apple is heading. Even in Gurman's more hopeful version, a new Vision Pro is at least two years away and depends on a project its own team doesn't seem fully committed to.
The smart glasses pivot
The reporting is much more consistent about what comes next. Several outlets, mostly drawing on Gurman's reporting, say Apple is aiming to ship its first smart glasses by late 2027, ahead of any redesigned headset.111316 The first model is expected to have no display. It would rely on cameras, microphones, speakers and Siri AI, much like Meta's Ray-Bans, with displays coming in a later generation.1317 Reported design details include acetate frames, finishes such as black, ocean blue and light brown, and front cameras arranged in an oval surrounded by indicator lights.12
The timeline has moved before. Gurman previously suggested late 2026 or early 2027, and Kuo predicted late 2027 back in 2025.16 Apple hasn't confirmed the glasses, their specs, their price or a launch date.13 Reports also say Apple hasn't been able to reuse Vision Pro hardware in the glasses, because it uses too much power for a small, light device.20
One report suggests a later version of the glasses could run full visionOS when paired with a Mac.19 If that happens, the visionOS work Apple is doing now could outlast the headset it was built for. The Apple Post made a similar point: even if N224 were canceled, the eye tracking, hand tracking and spatial interface work from Vision Pro could carry over into smaller wearables.17
What it means for spatial computing apps
For developers and existing owners, the takeaway is mixed. Apple still releases content for the headset. In October it premiered Remnants, an immersive horror film in the Apple Immersive Video format, shot in 8K with a 180-degree field of view, available only on Vision Pro.20 visionOS 27 also added real platform features, including curved windows, fully immersive web experiences in Safari, and 360-degree backgrounds developers can render around a user's space.15
But a point release whose main additions are Siri controls and image watermarking suggests Apple's investment in visionOS is now mostly about keeping it aligned with its other platforms, not pushing spatial computing forward. Reader comments on MacRumors' coverage joked that the update was mainly a reminder that the Vision Pro exists.1 That reaction says something about how far the product has slipped from public attention.
Our read is that visionOS 27.2 is exactly what a product in maintenance mode would get: security fixes, features shared across platforms, and nothing that would change anyone's mind about buying a $3,699 headset. The future of visionOS, if it has one, is increasingly tied to the glasses Apple is reportedly building, not to the device it runs on today.
