A synthetic-DNA company gets repriced as AI infrastructure
Twist Bioscience is now trading at levels it has not reached in more than five years. The rally did not come from a drug approval or a clinical readout. It came from investors deciding that a synthetic DNA and antibody-services company is a key supplier to AI-driven drug discovery. Shares were already at their highest level since February 2021 by mid-September, after an 11% jump in a single session9. The run kept going into October. One market report traced the stock from about $121 on September 10 to $205 by October 519.
The catalyst named in nearly all the coverage is a deal with Eli Lilly's TuneLab, an AI and machine-learning drug discovery platform. Under the agreement, Twist supplies antibody characterization data and related lab services to the platform911. Reports describe the integration in practical terms. TuneLab users can order antibody work through preferred Twist protocols, and the resulting experimental data feeds Lilly's models, including one called AbLab1719.
One thing in the headline needs explaining. Twist does not develop drugs, so this is not a typical biotech breakout. That difference is the most important part of the story.
What the Lilly deal actually provides
AI drug discovery models need large amounts of reliable wet-lab data: measurements of how real antibodies bind, express and behave. Software alone cannot produce that data. The TuneLab arrangement makes Twist one of the labs that generates those measurements19. Trading-focused outlets repeatedly call it a "picks-and-shovels" position. Twist does not have to pick which drug candidate succeeds, because it sells data and services to everyone running experiments1220.
I think that framing is right, and it explains why the market reacted so strongly to what is, on paper, a services agreement. A preferred-protocol slot inside a large drugmaker's AI platform could turn into repeat orders. Commentators said exactly that, describing the deal as more like a recurring data pipeline than a one-time contract19. That is still a possibility, not something Twist has shown yet. No disclosed financial terms appeared in any of the reports.
Twist also has a second AI connection. Management said a pilot project making AI-designed mini-binder proteins for Anthropic is real. They added that it is "probably sort of" already counted in the company's fiscal 2027 orders outlook1417. That cautious wording deserves attention. Management is signaling that the Anthropic work should not be treated as extra upside on top of guidance.
Wall Street chased the move
Analysts kept raising their targets as the stock climbed. Leerink lifted its price target from $120 to $160 on September 17 and to $190 on September 29, keeping an Outperform rating both times12. The firm's argument rests on two points. First, it says Twist's stated goal of doubling annual revenue to $1 billion by fiscal 2031 may be conservative9. Second, it estimates the AI drug discovery opportunity at about $7 billion: roughly $3 billion from building AI models and $4 billion from drug discovery9. Guggenheim more than doubled its target to $212 and reiterated a Buy ahead of third-quarter results20.
Other analysts were more cautious. UBS started coverage at Neutral with a $144 target12. That figure looked aggressive when the average Street target was around $87.561518. It now sits well below where the stock trades. The most-followed fair-value narrative on one analytics platform puts Twist at $105.30 and calls the shares about 56% overvalued at a $164.60 close11. The stock has risen further since then.
Analysts broadly agree on the direction of the story but differ sharply on what it is worth. Price targets run from below $110 to above $210 for the same company with the same disclosed facts. That spread shows how much of the current price depends on how big and how lasting the AI opportunity turns out to be, rather than on near-term earnings.
The fundamentals: real growth, still losing money
The operating results are solid, though they would not support this valuation without the AI story. Twist reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $118.4 million, up more than 23% from a year earlier. It was the company's 14th straight quarter of growth, and gross margin improved to 52.8%18. Revenue over the trailing year was about $376.6 million17. Management is guiding toward adjusted EBITDA breakeven in the fourth quarter of fiscal 20261319.
On a GAAP basis, the company is still losing money. Coverage cites a quarterly net loss of about $35.1 million and an operating margin around -31.8%16. Return on equity is deeply negative17. Reports put the price-to-sales ratio anywhere from above 20 to near 29, depending on the date1520. That range mostly reflects how fast the stock rose.
The liquidity figures also vary between reports. One puts cash and equivalents at about $117.4 million14, and others cite about $166.8 million once short-term investments are included1519. These numbers measure different things rather than conflicting. Either way, with a current ratio of 2.7 and debt-to-equity near 0.21, Twist is not under financial pressure1419.
The reports also differ on what caused individual moves. One account of the 16% gain on September 24 credits strong earnings and guidance14. Others covering the same session point to the Lilly deal and Leerink's target increase1617. The timeline supports the second explanation. The TuneLab news came out September 16, and the stock rose for several days afterward17. Leerink's reports and AI-related comments from management kept the momentum going.
A broader trend: biotech tools are being rewarded
Twist is not the only company in this position. Haemonetics hit a five-year high the same day Twist did, after Citi upgraded it to Buy because of a renewed plasma-collection relationship with CSL9. Haemonetics then jumped 17% to a new 52-week high of $121 in early October. Other tools and services companies, including Illumina, Charles River Laboratories and Azenta, have also set 52-week highs in recent sessions2110.
The wider market has helped. The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF was up 22.4% year to date through late September, compared with 11.4% for the S&P 500, according to a BofA note24. More recent quote data puts the fund's year-to-date total return near 24%4.
Rates remain a risk. On one recent session the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.36%, and small-cap indices fell even though large caps finished only slightly lower1. A company like Twist, with a high valuation and most of its value in future cash flows, is especially exposed when rates rise.
Where this leaves Twist
I read the rally as a genuine repricing with a lot of speculation layered on top. The Lilly deal is a real endorsement. It puts Twist's lab processes inside a major drugmaker's AI system, at a time when AI-native drug discovery depends on high-quality experimental data. The company's revenue growth and improving margins also give the story a foundation, which many AI-themed stocks lack.
The price has gotten ahead of the evidence, though. Shares have roughly doubled in about a month19 and trade above most published estimates of fair value11. Meanwhile, the deal's economics have not been disclosed, and management has said its most eye-catching AI project is already in guidance. The bull case also leans heavily on Leerink's $7 billion market estimate9, which is one firm's projection.
Upcoming results will be the first real test. Investors will want to know whether the company reached its EBITDA breakeven target and whether management can measure demand linked to TuneLab or AI more broadly. If those orders appear in the numbers, the high targets from Guggenheim and Leerink will look reasonable. If they don't, a stock with a price-to-sales ratio near 29 has a long way to fall.
For now, the market is valuing a profitable future that Twist has not yet reported.
