Checkout moves into the feed
TikTok wants the whole path from video to purchase to happen inside its app. On October 5, at Advertising Week New York, the company announced two products: Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent, and Buy Direct, an in-app checkout that lets people buy from a brand without leaving TikTok.2 According to TikTok, the assistant keeps track of context and what a shopper wants over the course of a conversation. It answers questions about product details, shipping, sizing and availability, and it can complete the purchase in that same chat.22 Buy Direct lets users buy with one click from the For You feed, the algorithm-driven video stream at the center of the app.22
TikTok says it is building both features with commerce and payment partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.22 The company calls them the first of several "agentic commerce" experiences it plans to add.21 The way they are built matters more than the announcement suggests. TikTok's documentation says Buy Direct requires integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). It also says the checkout uses stored payment methods and saved addresses and offers order tracking inside the app.621
How far it has actually rolled out
The coverage agrees on what the products do. It splits on how available they are. Several headlines say TikTok "rolled out" the tools, and Adweek reported they were starting to reach users and brands in the United States.6 TikTok's own business materials describe something more limited: advertisers can get access through eligibility-based testing and have to ask their TikTok sales partner to see if they qualify.2126 The Next Web noted that TikTok gave no launch date.2 TikTok has also not disclosed general availability, merchant fees or any conversion results.6
The most accurate description is a staged pilot announced as a launch. The ad-industry setting makes that framing understandable. Even so, merchants should treat Buy Direct as something they can apply to test, not a switch they can already turn on.
Outlets also differ on how the tools relate to TikTok Shop. One outlet described the features as an addition to TikTok Shop.4 Most coverage says the opposite: the tools reach beyond the marketplace into the wider app, including the For You feed.228 Adweek described the direct-purchase option as separate from TikTok Shop.6 Another outlet explained the difference this way: TikTok Shop requires brands to list inventory on TikTok's own backend, while the UCP-based setup reads a brand's existing catalog in a standard format.26 That second account fits the technical details better, and it is the more important point. TikTok now wants to complete purchases for brands that never joined its marketplace.
The numbers behind the push
Outlets cite largely the same figures. eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop brought in about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, around 18% of U.S. social commerce.18 One summary presented that figure as a projection for this year instead of an estimate for 2025, which looks like a misreading.5 TikTok also points to an economic impact report saying activity on the platform added $81 billion to U.S. business GDP and that 54 million Americans bought something after watching a TikTok video.3 TikTok commissioned that report from PF Global and released it the week before the announcement, so it is promotional material rather than independent research.9
The more ambitious forecast comes from outside the company. The Wall Street Journal reported in April that TikTok Shop could grow from about 1% of overall retail sales to 10% by 2028, citing Circana's Marshal Cohen.21 If that happens even in part, a checkout that works across the whole app becomes the most direct way to get there.
Why TikTok's version may work better than the chatbots'
The wider agentic-commerce market gives this launch its significance. The first major attempt at checkout inside a chatbot went badly. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT with Stripe in September 2025.15 In March 2026 it pulled back, saying the first version was not flexible enough and letting merchants use their own checkout while it concentrated on product discovery.29 Walmart reported that items sold inside the chatbot converted at roughly a third of the rate of items that sent shoppers to its website.15 Reports also said merchant adoption stayed low and that keeping prices and stock in sync in real time was harder than expected.14
Others kept going. Google announced UCP in January 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. By September, Google said the protocol supported direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers.15 Microsoft started a U.S. rollout of Copilot Checkout, and Shopify's documentation lists direct checkout on Meta surfaces.12 Meta's Muse shopping checkout also arrived in the same busy week.728
This reading is analysis, not something TikTok has said. TikTok's advantage over the chatbots is where shopping intent starts. In ChatGPT, a shopper has to show up already wanting something. On TikTok, the feed creates the want. TikTok's own pitch says as much: shoppers lose interest when they have to look up product details themselves or hit friction at checkout, so its agents sit next to the ad at the moment intent is highest.21 TechCrunch made a similar point, writing that pairing an assistant with direct payments turns an impulse-driven feed into a place to ask questions and buy on the spot.22 Several outlets see this as a defensive move as well, meant to keep users from taking product questions to ChatGPT.221 Survey data supports that concern. An IAB study found that 72% of people who used AI for shopping research relied on general-purpose assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.9
Choosing a payments standard
The payments setup is where TikTok has made a clear choice. Two open standards lead checkout by AI agents: the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) from OpenAI and Stripe, and Google's UCP.12 By building Buy Direct on UCP, TikTok has backed the standard that is currently powering live checkout at scale, not the one tied to OpenAI's paused experiment.613 Stripe's involvement makes the picture less of a two-sided fight. Stripe co-wrote ACP, is listed among UCP's supporters, and in April laid out a plan to make every merchant agent-ready by default across the major AI platforms.1117
The practical result is that the protocol layer is becoming shared plumbing, and the competition is shifting to who controls the surface where the purchase happens. Shopify's documentation already describes merchants staying the merchant of record across AI channels, with no channel fees published beyond standard payment processing.12 What TikTok will charge for Buy Direct is still unknown.6
The partners point to a related trend. Agentic commerce looks to be shifting from building infrastructure to getting distribution, and TikTok's feed is one of the largest distribution channels in consumer technology.28 Visa and Mastercard have built tokenized, spending-limited card credentials for AI agents. Those efforts, along with Google's signed "mandates" for proving what a user authorized, deal with consent and fraud questions that one-click flows make more urgent.1420
What's still unresolved
Three problems stand out. The first is friction. One customer-experience analysis argued that the one-click checkout, not the chatbot, is the real story, because it removes the pause in which shoppers reconsider a purchase. It recommended clear confirmation steps.4 The second is neutrality. TikTok has not said whether sponsored placements can affect what the assistant recommends, or whether paid relationships will be labeled in AI conversations.7 It has also not said whether the assistant will draw on creator content, the type of input consumers say they trust.9 The third is who owns the customer. If the product page, customer-service chat and checkout all move into an app the brand does not control, brands may lose the customer relationship and the data that comes with it.27
The shopping tools are part of a larger set of agent products. TikTok also announced Agentic Leads for qualifying sales prospects in direct messages and on advertisers' own websites, and opened its TikTok Ad Network to U.S. advertisers, covering nearly 400,000 outside apps.2 It says the number of advertisers using its Model Context Protocol connector, which links AI agents such as Claude and Perplexity to its ad tools, has grown more than 200% since launch.24 In September it introduced a Seller Assistant chatbot for merchants, so the new Shopping Assistant is the buyer-side counterpart.25
The overall picture is consistent. TikTok is building AI agents for every step of a transaction: advertisers' agents buy the ads, a merchant agent manages listings, and a shopper agent closes the sale. Whether people actually trust an AI agent with one-click purchases in the feed will become clear only when TikTok publishes conversion data, and it has not yet.6
