Samsung C&T Profit Beats Forecasts on Chip Fab Construction Boom
A quarter built on fabs
Samsung C&T's third-quarter results show how much of the AI hardware boom is now passing through construction companies. The Samsung Group's construction and trading arm reported July–September consolidated revenue of 12.008 trillion won and operating profit of 1.143 trillion won. Those figures are up 18.3% and 15.0% from a year earlier.1 Most of the gain came from one division. Revenue at the engineering and construction unit rose 44.5% to 4.465 trillion won, and its operating profit jumped 149.5% to 277 billion won.1 The company and the analysts covering it agree on the reason: large semiconductor plant projects, led by Samsung Electronics' P5 complex in Pyeongtaek, have moved past early preparation and into full construction.11
Investors liked the result. Samsung C&T shares rose 7.23% to 215,000 won after the release.14
How big was the beat?
Every account says the company beat expectations. They differ on the size of the beat because each used a different consensus figure. The Seoul Economic Daily compared the result with FnGuide's one-month average forecast of 971.7 billion won in operating profit and put the beat at about 17.6%.1 A separate report from the same paper used a 967 billion won consensus, which gives an 18.2% beat.12 Yonhap's survey through Yonhap Infomax also landed on 18.2%.13 Hanwha Investment & Securities, using its own benchmark, put the operating profit beat at 13.9% and the revenue beat at 4.3%.8
The spread between 14% and 18% doesn't change the main point. The construction unit is earning more than the market expected, and the gap is wide enough that forecasts will have to rise.
The P5 effect and the economics of building fabs
The most important details sit inside the construction segment. Building revenue, which covers fab work, rose by 1.126 trillion won from a year earlier to 3.185 trillion won. New high-tech projects drove the increase, including Pyeongtaek P5 Fab 1 and Fab 2, along with data center and large mixed-use projects that are now in full swing.7 Hanwha calculated that building revenue grew 54.7% year on year, faster than the division as a whole.8
The rise in margins says more than the rise in revenue. The construction unit's operating margin reached 6.2%, compared with 3.6% a year earlier.1 It also improved from 5.1% in the second quarter, which management described as a return to the 6% range. One explanation is that large projects book revenue as work progresses. Once a project passes the early setup phase, recognized revenue grows quickly, and analysts also credited tighter project management.11
A plausible reading is that fab construction carries better margins than much of Samsung C&T's other work. Chanmu Kim, head of global investor relations, said high-tech projects made up about half of construction revenue and that the share should keep growing.2 As the mix shifts toward fabs, margins should rise further unless costs climb.
The reports also differ in tone. Investing.com's recap of the call said no revenue or earnings forecast was available for a direct comparison.14 That contrasts with the Korean coverage, which treated the quarter as a clear earnings surprise. The Korean outlets had access to domestic consensus data, so their framing is the more reliable one.
Orders show where chip investment is heading
The quarterly profit matters, but the order book says more about the next few years. The construction unit booked 8.827 trillion won in new orders in the third quarter. That brought orders for the first nine months to 19.275 trillion won and the backlog to 37.743 trillion won at the end of September.1 Management listed the chip-related contracts on the call:214
- Taylor Fab 2 in Texas: 2.8 trillion won
- Structural frame for Pyeongtaek P5 Fab 2: 0.6 trillion won
- Giheung SPR: 0.4 trillion won
- Pyeongtaek P4 Phase 2: 0.2 trillion won
Hanwha's figures make the scale of the chip work clearer. Samsung C&T began the year targeting 6.8 trillion won in new high-tech orders. By the end of the third quarter it had already won 11.2 trillion won, close to its annual record of 12.3 trillion won set in 2023.8 Hanwha also reported a fourth-quarter pipeline of more than 11 trillion won.8 The company raised its full-year order target to 30.1 trillion won from 23.5 trillion won.1
The customer is mostly Samsung Electronics. On October 29 the chipmaker reported third-quarter operating profit of 107.44 trillion won. Its semiconductor business earned 106.5 trillion won, driven by demand for AI memory and a sharp ramp in HBM4 sales. Samsung Electronics said it was the first global technology company to earn more than 100 trillion won in operating profit in a single quarter.
The link between the two companies is straightforward. When a chipmaker earns that much, it can pay for new fab capacity, and much of that construction work goes to Samsung C&T. Hanwha's note named expanding semiconductor investment as the main driver of the construction recovery.8
Taylor and the US side of the build-out
The Taylor contract adds a US element to a story that has mostly been about Korea. Management said Taylor Fab 2 is due to break ground in the fourth quarter. It will join the Malaysia data center, the Yongin Duksung data center and a solar project in Qatar as overseas work that is gaining momentum. Kim said next year's revenue should rise significantly compared with 2026 as the Pyeongtaek and Taylor projects make major progress.2
Hanwha expects the same. It raised its 2027 forecasts for Samsung C&T by 8.7% for revenue, to 54.248 trillion won, and by 6.9% for operating profit, to 4.622 trillion won.
Beyond fabs: data centers, power and SMRs
Samsung C&T is presenting fab work as the base for a wider set of infrastructure businesses. On the call, management described plans to bid for modular data center EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) work and possibly to expand across the data center value chain. It also discussed power generation, transmission and network infrastructure projects.2 The company said it was selected as a joint EPC partner for a project planned around four 300-megawatt BWRX-300 small modular reactors (SMRs). It also agreed in September to invest $70 million in US SMR developer Kairos Power.2 Coverage of the results mentioned SMRs and data center infrastructure as the next longer-term growth areas.11
All of these businesses depend on the same AI-driven spending cycle. Data centers need power, chipmakers need fabs, and a contractor that has proven it can build fabs on schedule has a credible case for the related work. That convergence looks deliberate.
What the headline numbers hide
The quarter had weak spots. Net profit fell 9.5% from a year earlier to 800.9 billion won. Yonhap attributed the drop to foreign-exchange losses.10 The Seoul Economic Daily said translation losses from a stronger won kept the operating gain from reaching the bottom line.11 Hanwha said net income attributable to controlling shareholders, 558 billion won, came in 9.8% below expectations.8
The bio businesses consolidated into Samsung C&T's results also weakened. Samsung Biologics' operating profit fell year on year because of costs from ramping up new plants, even though sales grew.4 Samsung Epis Holdings earned less because it received fewer milestone payments.2 The trading unit's profit fell from the second quarter. Management cited a high comparison base, lower tariff-free steel volumes after EU quotas took effect, and weaker chemical and fertilizer markets.
A few figures differ between outlets. Hanwha put revenue at 12.08 trillion won rather than the 12.008 trillion won the company reported.85 One Herald Business report gave resort revenue as 115 billion won, while the Seoul Economic Daily reported 1.115 trillion won.11 In both cases the company's own disclosures should be treated as the correct figures.
The usual risks for large construction projects also apply, including cost overruns and delays abroad and swings in raw material prices.11 Overseas fab work like Taylor is especially exposed to these.
The takeaway
The main story this quarter is Samsung C&T's growing dependence on Samsung Electronics' capital spending. That dependence is producing strong results now, with record high-tech orders, rising margins and a backlog that supports growth through 2027. It also ties the contractor's fortunes to a memory market that has historically been cyclical.
While AI demand keeps the chipmaker reporting record profits, the fab orders should keep coming. The diversification into data centers, power and SMRs is the more important long-term effort, because it aims to keep that infrastructure work going if chip spending slows. For now, the semiconductor plant pipeline is the main driver of Samsung C&T's earnings.
