Nucor Q3 Earnings Top Guidance as Sales Reach $11.25 Billion
A stronger quarter, but whether it was a beat depends on the benchmark
Nucor's third-quarter report shows the U.S. steel recovery is still working in the company's favor. Whether the quarter counts as a clean beat depends on which benchmark an investor uses. The Charlotte-based steelmaker reported net earnings attributable to stockholders of $1.32 billion, or $5.80 per diluted share, on net sales of $11.25 billion for the quarter ended October 3, 2026.16 That compares with $1.16 billion, or $5.04 per share, in the second quarter and $607 million, or $2.63 per share, a year earlier.8 EBITDA came in at $2.28 billion, and net earnings before noncontrolling interests reached $1.47 billion.16
On a year-over-year basis, per-share profit more than doubled. Sales grew about 32% from the $8.52 billion Nucor reported in the year-ago quarter.5 Sequentially, revenue rose from $10.40 billion in the second quarter.5 By any measure, profits rose sharply. What is less settled is how the result compares with what Wall Street expected.
Consensus figures varied widely
Pre-report estimates for the quarter were spread out. Benzinga Pro data put consensus at $5.83 per share on $10.79 billion of revenue.1 Investing.com cited $5.80 on $10.83 billion.2 MarketBeat had $5.84 on $10.84 billion.18 Post-release coverage used benchmarks that were further apart. ChartMill measured the result against a $5.98 consensus and called it a roughly 3% EPS miss, paired with a revenue beat of about 2.8% against a $10.943 billion estimate.17 GuruFocus, by contrast, said the $5.80 figure beat expectations of $5.42 per share.5
The benchmark that matters most is the company's own guidance, and the result clears it. On September 17, Nucor guided third-quarter earnings to $5.55 to $5.65 per diluted share.12 The actual $5.80 landed 15 cents above the top of that range. The analyst consensus from Benzinga, Investing.com and MarketBeat sat in a narrow $5.80 to $5.84 band, so EPS essentially matched those figures.1218 Revenue, meanwhile, beat every published consensus by a comfortable margin. This is a quarter that topped guidance and delivered stronger sales than expected, with profit in line. Calling it either a big beat or a miss misreads it.
The early market reaction points the same way. ChartMill reported the stock indicated up about 1.9% in after-hours trading despite its own read of an EPS shortfall.17 After-hours moves often reverse, so this is only a preliminary signal.
Why the guidance mattered so much
The report is easier to understand in light of the September guidance. When Nucor issued its $5.55 to $5.65 range, the consensus estimate cited by MarketBeat was $6.17.9 Insider Monkey reported Street expectations at the time ranging from $5.99 to $6.20. Freedom Broker had modeled $7.54 per share before cutting its outlook.
A large part of that gap came from a one-time item. In the second quarter, the steel mills segment benefited from $130 million in cash refunds tied to raw-material procurement costs from earlier periods, and Nucor said it did not expect that benefit to recur.12 Second-quarter results also included a $61 million non-cash, pre-tax gain, worth 20 cents per share, from a higher valuation of Nucor's stake in fusion-energy company Helion.12 Without those items, the underlying improvement from the second to the third quarter is larger than the headline EPS change suggests.
Analysts cut their numbers quickly after the guidance, and the consensus landed close to where Nucor ended up. Investing.com reported that EPS estimates held flat in the week before the print and slipped less than 1% over two months, while revenue estimates edged up over 60 days.2 In effect, the guidance reset expectations and the company then beat its own range. That outcome was arguably what management wanted.
What drove the quarter: price, volume and one weak segment
The segment results matched what management described in September. Compared with the second quarter, earnings rose in steel mills and steel products and fell in raw materials.8 Higher average selling prices and larger volumes lifted steel mills, partly offset by higher costs of products sold.8 Steel products gained on both volume and realized pricing. Raw materials weakened on lower pricing and shipments.8 Corporate and eliminations expense rose, mainly because the Helion gain did not repeat.8
Pre-earnings coverage had expected the steel mills segment to lead. Investing.com described domestic steel prices as surging amid tight supply.2 KeyBanc analyst Samuel McKinney pointed to persistently rising sheet prices and share gains against imports, and said the stock traded at roughly 7.0 to 7.5 times estimated 2027 EV-to-EBITDA.2 Earlier in the year, Nucor set its second consecutive quarterly record for steel mill shipments, 7.1 million tons in the second quarter. The company credited investment across key sectors of the U.S. economy and supportive federal trade policy.
Chair and CEO Leon Topalian credited robust demand across key end markets. He said Nucor generated about $2.7 billion of free cash flow and returned nearly $1.4 billion to shareholders over the first nine months of 2026.16 He also pointed to the first heat at the company's West Virginia sheet mill in September and the start-up of a second galvanizing line at Nucor Steel Berkeley.16 In the quarter, Nucor bought back about 2.03 million shares at an average price of $247.04.8 The company ended the period with $3.64 billion in cash and short-term investments and an undrawn $2.25 billion credit facility.8
The fourth-quarter outlook
The guidance for the next quarter may matter more than the third-quarter numbers. Nucor expects fourth-quarter earnings to be generally in line with or modestly above the third quarter.8 It sees steel mills results as stable, with higher realized prices offset by seasonally lower volumes and higher costs. Raw materials earnings are expected to slip slightly on lower direct reduced iron pricing.8
In a steel industry heading into its seasonally slow months, guidance that holds earnings flat to higher is a confident outlook. It also counters the main bear argument from September, that the guidance shortfall marked a turn in the cycle. TIKR's analysis at the time framed the question as whether the soft guidance was a reset or the start of a pattern.9 Based on this outlook, it looks more like a reset.
Price targets: lots of small changes, roughly 10% upside
Price-target changes heading into the report went in both directions. Barclays' Richard Garchitorena kept an Overweight rating and raised his target from $295 to $306 on October 19.1 Other bullish analysts trimmed. JPMorgan's Bill Peterson cut his target from $308 to $296 while staying Overweight, and KeyBanc's McKinney lowered his from $288 to $286.1 After the September guidance, Wells Fargo's Timna Tanners moved her target from $285 to $280.1 Goldman Sachs went from $304 to $302 and kept a Buy rating.3 The only notable downgrade came from Freedom Broker's Vitaly Kononov, who moved to Hold and cut his target from $305 to $285.1 Even so, Kononov said the market may have overreacted to the weaker guidance.
Average price targets also differ by source. Investing.com and Yahoo Finance put the mean at $285, about 10% above the $258.11 close before the report.210 MarketBeat's average was lower at $276.86, with one Strong Buy, thirteen Buy and three Hold ratings.3 Yahoo showed a range from $226 to $310.10
Overall, analysts are not pricing in much further upside. The stock was trading below its 52-week high of $280.11, at a forward P/E of about 13 compared with a trailing multiple near 20.2 That gap reflects expected earnings growth: MarketBeat data showed analysts expecting $19.62 per share for 2026 and $21.66 for 2027.3 Valuation views differ, too. GuruFocus gave the company a strong overall score but estimated the stock was about 33% above its GF Value. It also noted roughly $57 million in insider sales over the past year.5
The takeaway
Nucor's third quarter does not change the investment case, and that counts in its favor. Management set expectations low in September and then beat its own range. Revenue topped forecasts, and the outlook calls for steady results through a seasonally weak quarter. The disagreement over whether EPS beat or missed mostly reflects differences in data providers' consensus figures, not a real shortfall. The next question is margins. Investors will want to know whether new capacity in West Virginia and at Berkeley can keep raising profits once steel prices stop rising. The October 27 earnings call is the first chance to hear management address that.8
