Moderna's comeback reaches the index
Moderna shares jumped to a new 52-week high on Friday, October 9, 2026, the same day the company returned to the Nasdaq-100. The stock gained roughly 650% over the year leading into that session, which makes it one of the standout biotech trades of 202612. Reports differ on the exact peak. One account puts the intraday high at $212.53 and the company's market value near $82 billion5. Another says shares climbed more than 9% early to $216.95 before falling back to about $208.6917. Later intraday updates had the stock up more than 12%, with a run from the mid-$140s to above $220 over recent weeks16.
The accounts also differ on the size of the gain, which depends on the starting point. One tally puts the one-year increase at 657.73%5. Another put the year-to-date gain near 553% as of October 2, giving a market value of about $75.4 billion at that point19. However it is measured, this is a big change for a company whose shares had fallen as low as $22 after pandemic vaccine demand faded17.
My reading of the coverage is that two separate forces lifted the stock. One is fundamental: a late-stage cancer vaccine result that changed how investors value Moderna's pipeline. The other is mechanical: index-fund buying that had a known date. Both played a part. They will not last the same way.
The trigger: a cancer vaccine, not COVID
The repricing started in August. Moderna and Merck said a late-stage trial of intismeran autogene, an individualized mRNA cancer vaccine, met its main goal in patients with high-risk melanoma that had been surgically removed20. Given alongside Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda, the vaccine delayed the return and spread of the disease compared with Keytruda alone20. By the start of October, the stock was up about 222% since mid-August, and several outlets tied that gain directly to the melanoma result1415.
This is where the story matters for biotech. For years, Moderna was treated as a COVID stock that would fade as vaccine sales fell. Management now calls oncology the next planned step for the mRNA platform rather than a desperate pivot. The CEO has said the strategy was always to prove the technology in simpler infectious diseases first, then move into harder areas such as cancer and Alzheimer's11. The company also points to five approved infectious-disease vaccines, including a seasonal flu shot and a combined flu and COVID vaccine in Europe, as recurring revenue alongside the cancer program18.
The company is also preparing to manufacture and sell the vaccine. It created a new chief operating officer role and brought back veteran executive Juan Andres to scale manufacturing for intismeran autogene11. An expanded partnership with Tempus and Merck, with Tempus handling logistics and sequencing, is meant to prepare the therapy for possible commercial use alongside Keytruda16. The market did not take all of this well: shares fell about 6–7% around the Andres announcement and the planned retirement of operations leader Jerh Collins11. That sharp reaction suggests investors remain nervous about whether Moderna can deliver, even as they pay up for the pipeline.
The mechanics: forced buying from index funds
Nasdaq announced on October 1, after the close, that Moderna would replace Warner Bros. Discovery in the Nasdaq-100 before the open on October 91415. Warner Bros. Discovery left the index because Paramount Skydance's roughly $81 billion acquisition of the studio was completing19. Moderna had been removed from the same index in December 2024 after its market value collapsed, and the rally lifted it back over the bar12.
The index matters because of how much money follows it. More than 200 investment products with over $800 billion in assets track the Nasdaq-100, and they have to buy a stock when it is added1217. Because the date was public, traders could buy ahead of those funds. One explainer says that helps account for the climb from about $189 to over $210 in the week between the announcement and the effective date12. Inclusion does not change Moderna's sales or its pipeline20. In one blunt phrase, it is "a flow, not a verdict"12.
The coverage broadly agrees on this point. Trading-focused outlets presented the inclusion as a near-term catalyst with a fixed date1118. More cautious outlets stressed that the buying was predictable and therefore partly priced in early1219. The moves in rival stocks support the view that this was about Moderna specifically: as Moderna rose in early October, BioNTech and Pfizer stayed mostly flat1519.
Wall Street is not following the stock
The sharpest split in the coverage is between the share price and analyst price targets. Citi analyst Geoff Meacham downgraded Moderna to Sell from Neutral just before the index news, while raising his target to $80 from $6017. His reasoning is the most specific bear case available. Citi estimates Moderna would need close to $13 billion in yearly oncology sales to justify a price near $200, nearly seven times the firm's own forecast for the cancer business19.
Other analysts are also well below the market. Morgan Stanley and Evercore ISI raised their targets to $95 and $80, and the Street consensus is mostly Hold with a mean target of about $116.8413. In early October, the average target implied about 42% downside19. Bernstein kept a Market Perform rating while praising the mRNA therapeutics platform, and UBS stayed at Neutral while waiting for more melanoma data5.
In my view, this gap is the most important part of the story. With the stock above $200 and most targets below $120, the market is valuing Moderna as a successful cancer-therapy platform before the analysts who model its revenue are willing to. That can last for a while in a momentum-driven stock. It also leaves little room for a disappointment.
The finances behind the rally
Moderna is still losing money. Trailing revenue was about $1.92 billion, the operating (EBIT) margin was close to −139%, and R&D spending was $651 million in the latest reported quarter16. The balance sheet is strong: the company ended the quarter with about $5.1 billion in cash and short-term investments and a current ratio near 2.318. It has also raised $2.6 billion for the oncology push12. The company can therefore fund its pipeline without relying heavily on debt18. The stock price now reflects expected future cancer revenue, not current earnings12.
There is also a legal issue. A federal judge in Delaware declined to dismiss patent lawsuits filed by Bayer's Monsanto unit against Moderna, Pfizer and BioNTech over mRNA technology used in COVID-19 vaccines5.
The sector backdrop
Moderna's run is part of a broader biotech recovery. A BofA note said the XBI biotech ETF had gained 22.4% year to date by late September, compared with 11.4% for the S&P 50030. The equal-weighted fund was recently quoted with a year-to-date return near 24%4. Several other companies hit new highs on clinical or commercial news in the same week. Vaxcyte rose more than 31% on positive Phase 3 results for its VAX-31 pneumococcal vaccine, then launched a $500 million stock offering. Vir Biotechnology reached a 52-week high on progress in its prostate cancer and hepatitis programs10. CareDx reached its highest level in more than four years33.
The macro backdrop is less friendly. The 10-year Treasury yield recently reached 5.36%1, and bond giant Pimco sees a real chance of 6%, which tends to make investors more selective about risk25. Friday's broad rally came as yields eased17. That ties Moderna's momentum partly to bond-market conditions it cannot control.
What to watch next
Two dates matter more than the index addition. Melanoma data for intismeran autogene are due October 24, and quarterly earnings follow on October 2912. The coverage describes the first date in two different ways. Some outlets call it an ESMO data presentation1415. Others call it a Phase 3 readout that could extend or reverse the rally17. Since the trial already met its main goal in August20, the October 24 event looks more like a detailed look at the data than a first answer. For a stock priced like this one, the details will still decide a lot.
My view is this: the cancer vaccine result is real, and the market was right to stop treating Moderna as only a COVID company. But the move to $200-plus also includes index-driven demand that has now arrived, sentiment that ignored a Sell rating within a day14, and a valuation Citi's own math calls unrealistic19. The index buying has largely happened. What happens to the stock next depends on the October 24 data.
