J.B. Hunt Q3 Earnings: Revenue Jumps 20% as Cost Pressure Cuts Targets
A strong top line against a lowered bar
J.B. Hunt Transport Services had a third quarter that looked very different depending on which line you read. Revenue came in strong. Profit barely moved. In the days before the October 15 report, a long list of brokerages cut their price targets, and more followed once the numbers were out. Analysts have spent much of 2026 saying the trucking recovery is real. They are now arguing about how long it will take for that recovery to show up in J.B. Hunt's margins.
The company reported GAAP net earnings of $172.4 million, or $1.82 per diluted share, for the quarter. A year earlier it earned $170.8 million, or $1.76 a share.14 Total operating revenue rose 20% to $3.68 billion. Operating income grew just 2% to $247.1 million.14 Fuel surcharges explain part of that gap. Surcharge revenue jumped to $670.8 million from $385.6 million, and revenue excluding fuel surcharges grew 13%.13 Operating margin fell to 6.7% from 7.9%. The company pointed to higher purchased transportation, fuel and fuel taxes, and insurance claims.13
Beat, miss or in line: it depends on the consensus
The headlines did not agree on whether J.B. Hunt beat. Talk Business & Politics said the company topped a 22-analyst consensus of $1.81 per share and beat revenue expectations of $3.59 billion.18 The Associated Press, via Zacks, also cited $1.81 and $3.56 billion.13 An Investing.com transcript summary called the EPS result in line with a $1.82 estimate, with no bottom-line surprise.16 Benzinga called it a miss against a $1.95 consensus, while noting that sales beat.2
The gap comes down to timing. Some consensus figures were updated after the company's mid-September warning and some were not. Alphastreet found that consensus EPS had dropped 15.4% in 30 days, from $2.14 to $1.81, before the report.7 Barchart had shown a $2 estimate as recently as October 1.10 FreightWaves summed it up as a slight beat over a bar that had already been lowered, with EPS one cent above revised expectations.19
The sensible reading is that J.B. Hunt hit the reset target it gave itself, not that it beat on fundamentals. In September the company guided to a 5% to 10% sequential decline in EPS, which implied about $1.77 at the midpoint. It came in slightly better than that.19 Stephens, which expected $1.85, said its shortfall came from interest and tax-rate items, and that operating income was modestly above its forecast.18 FreightWaves added that a higher tax rate cost about four cents a share, partly offset by two cents from lower net interest expense.19 Measured against the warning, the quarter was fine. Measured against what analysts expected in early summer, it was a clear step down.
The September warning set up the quarter
The key event happened a month before the report. On September 16, J.B. Hunt shares fell as much as 13.3% intraday after management warned that cost pressures could cut third-quarter EPS by about 10% from the prior quarter.10 FreightWaves listed the headwinds the company flagged: roughly $10 million from a sharp rise in diesel prices, $25 million in driver-related costs and $10 million in elevated cargo claims.19 On the call, the company said quarterly headwinds from driver investments, fuel swings and claims topped $50 million versus the prior quarter.16
That was a sharp turn from the second quarter. Revenue then rose 19.4% to $3.50 billion and EPS climbed 45.8% to $1.91, helped by productivity gains and lower structural costs.10 Over the first half of 2026, earnings rose 30.9% to $322.58 million.5 Expectations for the year were high, and the September update reset them quickly.
Price targets came down before and after the print
The target cuts started before earnings. Truist dropped its target to $235 from $295 and kept a Hold rating, saying the cut reflected compressed valuation multiples.1 Citi went to $254 from $309 with a Neutral rating. It argued that the selloff in transport stocks had improved the risk/reward going into earnings, but said fuel prices and rising interest rates would likely keep investors cautious.1 BMO trimmed its target only slightly, to $315 from $320, and kept Outperform.8 JPMorgan cut to $287 from $313 on October 5 and kept Overweight. It said the summer softness in spot rates would not derail contract-rate renewals, which it expects to keep rising into 2027.1 Stephens cut its target by $40 to $330 and stayed at overweight.5 Raymond James had already moved to $300 from $315 in mid-September.3
A second round came after the report. JPMorgan went to $283, Wells Fargo to $285 from $305, Evercore ISI to $275 from $277 and Stephens to $325 from $330, all keeping positive ratings.2 BofA cut to $295 from $302, and Morgan Stanley went to $195 from $200.6 A few moved the other way. Citi raised its target to $263 from $254, and UBS went to $273 from $264.6 Benzinga reported the shares down 3.7% to $226.61 the next day.2
Most of the post-earnings cuts were small, and most firms kept bullish ratings. That suggests the analysts' view of the business did not change. What changed was the timeline for margin recovery. The bigger cuts happened before the report, when analysts were adjusting both for the September warning and for lower valuations across the sector.
Why the recovery is "supply-driven"
The biggest question in the coverage is what is actually driving the freight upturn. BMO said fundamentals are still constructive, but the evidence points to a recovery led by shrinking supply rather than a broad rise in demand. Tighter truckload capacity is lifting spot rates and pricing per load, while underlying demand is stable but uneven across end markets.1 TD Cowen also called trucking momentum supply-driven, linking it to driver-safety issues that are working their way through the courts.8
The segment results fit that view. Pricing was strong where capacity is tight. Brokerage revenue rose 57% to $434 million and swung to $9.6 million in operating income from a small loss.12 Truckload revenue climbed 37%, but operating income fell 6% to $7.0 million.12 Revenue per load, excluding fuel, rose 27% in brokerage and 29% in truckload.12 Intermodal, which provides 60% of operating income, grew revenue 20% to $1.83 billion and operating income 18% on an 8% rise in loads.18 Excluding fuel, intermodal revenue per load rose only 2%.19 Volume is moving to rail, but pricing there has barely started to rise.
The weak spots were in businesses where J.B. Hunt pays for capacity itself. Dedicated Contract Services operating income fell 22% to $81.7 million on 11% revenue growth, as driver pay, medical claims, insurance and equipment costs rose.13 FreightWaves noted the segment's operating ratio worsened by 360 basis points to 91.5%.19 Final Mile Services operating income fell 76% to $1.6 million.12 Management is still working to offset a previously disclosed $90 million revenue headwind there.16 A tight driver market raises truckload rates, which helps brokerage. It also raises the cost of running J.B. Hunt's own fleet.
Analysts agree on the direction but not the timing
The bulls see the cost squeeze setting up the next leg of growth. Stephens argues that a truckload-to-intermodal contract price gap of more than 30% will speed up conversion to rail. It also expects the tough driver market to strengthen the dedicated pipeline, while truckload rates support brokerage and trucking over the next 12 to 18 months.5 JPMorgan agreed that the large discount to truckload is driving record conversion, and expects dedicated capital spending of about $400 million in the fourth quarter to support faster margin repair in 2027.4
JPMorgan also gave the most useful warning. It said most investors overestimate how quickly intermodal margins can improve, because contract rates reset on a normal annual cycle. It expects drayage costs to peak in the third quarter, with that segment approaching its long-term margin target only in the second half of 2027. It also expects dedicated start-up costs to weigh on fourth-quarter estimates.4 Morgan Stanley's Ravi Shanker said the quarter exposed cost pressures first flagged a month earlier, and that recovering through pricing will take time and effort.6
That seems like the right read. J.B. Hunt is gaining volume and its mix is moving toward intermodal, where the long-term economics favor it. But the third quarter showed that a capacity-driven upturn raises costs immediately, while pricing gains only arrive as contracts renew. Shareholders get some support while they wait. The company bought back about 704,000 shares for roughly $174 million during the quarter and has about $619 million left on its authorization.14 Until intermodal pricing starts to rise excluding fuel and dedicated margins stop falling, the stock will likely trade on the recovery's timeline more than on revenue growth.
