Grateful Dead Tribute Bands Fill Cincinnati and NKY Fall Calendar
Dead tribute shows fill the fall calendar in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky
The Grateful Dead never played many shows in Cincinnati, but cover bands now play the songs there almost every week. A crowd-built directory of Ohio tribute acts lists at least half a dozen Dead-centered shows in Greater Cincinnati and across the river in Northern Kentucky between early October and the end of 2026. They range from free Friday shows to a theater date in December.21 Most of the work is done by local bands such as Dead Centric, Fairbanks 142, Saturday's Children and the Ramble On Bros. Touring tributes from elsewhere fill in the larger rooms.421
The main takeaway is that this scene runs on breweries, taprooms, pubs and the occasional mid-sized theater, not on arena-scale events. Fans who want to find it have to put together information from listings that don't always agree.
What's on the schedule
The Ohio listings run on the Compass Rose tribute-band site, which says it tracks schedules for hundreds of Dead tribute acts nationwide. They show a steady run of local dates.321
- Dead Centric opened October with a free-music Friday show on October 2 at 3301 Madison Road in Cincinnati.21 The band calls itself a Cincinnati jam band that plays the Grateful Dead "and more." Its listed territory runs from Athens and Oxford to Toledo, Columbus and Parkersburg, West Virginia.7
- Fairbanks 142 is listed at Fretboard Brewing in Blue Ash on Friday, October 9, at 8 p.m. It returns on November 5 for a "Stronger Together for ION Center" event at Dead Low Brewing in Cincinnati.421
- Tin Roof Cats, billed with OmCat as a Grateful Dead tribute, has a three-city Ohio run: Columbus on October 14, Stanley's Pub in Cincinnati on October 15, and Maumee on October 16.21
- Ramble On Bros headline the Northern Kentucky date of the season, "Gravedancer's Ball / A Night of the Living Dead," on October 30 at the Southgate House Revival in Newport.21
- The Stolen Faces, a visiting tribute act also listed with shows in Mississippi, play the Woodward Theater in Cincinnati on December 18.213
Taken together, the schedule shows a local circuit in which the same few bands rotate through suburban breweries and city bars. Larger venues are mostly held for touring bands or special-event bills.
Northern Kentucky's role
The Kentucky side of the river shows up less often in the listings than you might expect. The Compass Rose Kentucky page lists only a handful of acts: groups in Louisville, Born Cross Eyed and the Very Garcia Band in Lexington, and a band called I Dig Pig with Cincinnati as its home city.13 A separate national directory from The Live Network lists I Dig Pig as an Ohio act that also plays Kentucky. It describes the band's specialty as the 1965–1972 Pigpen era, with its blues and R&B roots.14 The two listings put the same band in different states, which suggests how little the state line matters to bands working the Cincinnati market.
Venues tell the same story. The Ramble On Bros Halloween-season show at the Southgate House Revival in Newport sits in the Ohio directory, not the Kentucky one, even though the venue is south of the river.21 Dead Centric's public page gives an 859 phone number, a Kentucky area code, for a band that calls itself Cincinnati-based.7 Our reading is that Northern Kentucky works as part of one Cincinnati scene rather than as a separate one. Listings sorted by state hide that.
Northern Kentucky has also drawn bigger Dead-family names. Fans on a Grateful Dead community forum noted in 2019 that Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band were booked at the Madison Theater in Covington. The same thread pointed Cincinnati-area fans toward Lexington's Born Cross Eyed, which was then playing monthly at Cosmic Charlie's.11 The Live Network now describes Born Cross Eyed as a Lexington band with outdoor shows at The Burl and a busy schedule.14
Local bands with followings
Saturday's Children is the local act that has drawn the most press so far this year. Connect Clermont covered an April 25 show at Cappy's Taproom and Bottle Shop in Loveland. It reported that the six-piece band formed in 2022 and calls itself the premier Grateful Dead experience in the Cincinnati region.9 The paper described a two-drummer lineup, standard three-hour sets, and a crowd that mixed younger fans with longtime Deadheads. Some people watched from truck beds in the street.9 The setlist included staples like "Fire on the Mountain," "Truckin'" and "Sugar Magnolia."9 The report said the band also plays around Clermont County, including Little Miami Brewing.9
The brewery-and-taproom model matches how the trade describes the business more broadly. A national booking marketplace lists breweries, concert halls and festivals as the usual settings for Dead tribute acts and says setlists lean on crowd favorites while working in deep cuts.19 In Cincinnati, Fretboard Brewing, Dead Low Brewing, Cappy's and Little Miami Brewing all appear in the coverage or listings, which fits that pattern.921
The musicians have deep roots in Cincinnati's jam scene. A 2019 all-star tribute to Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead at Stanley's Pub brought Grateful Dead Hour host David Gans together with local players. The promoters said the bassist had been a fixture in the city's music scene for more than 25 years, along with his longtime drummer partner.6 Stanley's is still a regular stop: it is on this October's listings for Tin Roof Cats, and Dayton's Arrows of Neon played Grateful Dead nights there in 2015 and 2016.2122
Touring bands and bigger rooms
The larger rooms mostly go to bands from outside the region, and the Woodward Theater is the clearest example. On June 5, 2026, it hosted "A Dose of Dylan & the Dead," with a full Dylan set from Shelter From the Storm followed by a full Grateful Dead show from Columbus's Dead Revival Band. The venue billed the latter as one of the best Dead tribute bands in the Midwest.2 The same two-band show went to Woodlands Tavern in Columbus on September 18.27 The Woodward returns to Dead music with the Stolen Faces in December.21
National touring bands also stop in Cincinnati. Live Dead & Brothers, an all-star group featuring RatDog and Other Ones guitarist Mark Karan and Allman Brothers alumni, booked a Cincinnati date on May 6 as part of a spring 2026 tour built around the bands' 1969–1973 period.8
Not every listing holds up. A Cincinnati events aggregator has a page for Boston's Bearly Dead and says the band is coming to the city. Its own schedule shows zero Cincinnati shows, and the dates it lists are in Massachusetts, New York, the Carolinas, Florida and Delaware.126 Bearly Dead does tour nationally and says it has been on the road since October 2022.15 Still, fans should check listings like that one against the band's own announcements.
Why the Dead circuit lasts here
The Grateful Dead's own history in Cincinnati is fairly thin. A show archive lists two 1968 dates at the Hyde Park Teen Center, a 1973 show at Cincinnati Gardens, Riverfront Coliseum in 1976, and Riverbend Music Center in 1985. Later Ohio tours went mostly to Richfield Coliseum near Cleveland and Buckeye Lake.24 With so few original shows to look back on, the tribute circuit is how most local fans hear this music live, not a nostalgia act.
The bands also stay in the scene for a long time. Dayton-area Terrapin Moon says it has been playing for 20 years, and a founder hopes to pass the tradition on to a third generation of his family. Arrows of Neon's show history goes back to 2012 and includes Cincinnati bar dates.22 The rest of Ohio is busy too. The Ohio directory shows much more steady activity in Cleveland, with residencies like Dupree's Dead Band's monthly Foundation Room dates, and Columbus, where the Dead Revival Band played a free Columbus Commons show and a Columbus Crew "Grateful Dead Night" in September.2127
Where the listings disagree
The sources match on the basics: Cincinnati has an active local Dead circuit built around a few home bands, and midsize venues bring in touring acts. They differ on the details. Two snapshots of the same Ohio directory list different shows. One includes the Ramble On Bros' Newport show and several Northeast Ohio dates that the other leaves out.421 The directory spells Cincinnati two different ways in its band list and puts the I Dig Pig band on a different state page than another national directory does.131421
The practical point for fans on either side of the river is that the shows exist, but the information is spread out. Band pages, venue calendars and volunteer-run directories are the most reliable guide. Polished aggregator sites can show tours that aren't actually coming to town.
