Fed Rate Odds: October Hold, December Hike Risk for Bitcoin
The repricing
In the space of a few weeks, rate traders have moved decisively toward a pause from the Federal Reserve at its October 28 meeting. They have not abandoned the idea of another hike, though. They have pushed it back to December. That split matters for Bitcoin, which is already contending with ETF outflows, elevated bond yields and a strong dollar.
The venues tracking the meeting agree on October. CME's FedWatch tool puts the odds of a 25-basis-point hike at roughly 18% 1. One snapshot shows 81.7% for no change against 18.3% for a hike 2. Another reading has a hold at 82.8% 4. Prediction markets lean slightly further toward a pause. Polymarket shows 86% for no change and 14% for a hike 2. An average of Kalshi and Polymarket puts a hold at 84%, a hike at 17% and a cut at about 2% 3.
The size of the shift is notable. A month earlier, FedWatch showed a hold at 51% and a hike at 42.5% 4. On Kalshi, the hold contract jumped from 36% to 84% in a single week, while the hike contract fell 47 points 3.
December is where the risk sits
The markets diverge more on what comes after October. On one CME-based reading, the probability of at least a quarter-point hike by December is 87% 1. Another snapshot puts a December 25-basis-point hike at 76% 2. Prediction markets are more cautious. The combined Kalshi and Polymarket price for another hike before 2027 is 72%, and the December 9 meeting alone sits at 65% 3. Across these measures, traders consistently see a hike as more likely this year than in October 3.
The policy backdrop explains why. The Fed raised its benchmark to 4% in September, up from 3.75% 5. That leaves the target range at 3.75% to 4.00% 2. At the same meeting, officials raised their rate projections to 4.1% for the first year and 3.9% for the second, up from 3.6% and 3.4% 5. The September minutes reportedly showed most participants judging another hike appropriate by year-end 2. Taken together, the October pause looks less like the end of tightening and more like a delay.
Macro pressure on Bitcoin
The week's catalysts arrive in quick succession. CPI is due Wednesday, followed by producer prices and retail sales on Thursday 14. The Fed's Beige Book is scheduled for October 14 5. Bond yields have eased from the 24-year highs reached last week but remain elevated, and oil prices are another key driver 1. The dollar, meanwhile, has climbed to an 18-month high 4.
For Bitcoin, that combination has been uncomfortable. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded outflows even as BTC recovered from below $81,000 1. That suggests institutional demand has not followed the price rebound. Crypto-focused coverage frames the December pricing as a test of risk appetite in the final quarter 2. A later tightening move could still weigh on the asset even if October passes quietly 2.
A possible softer tone
Not everyone expects the pressure to keep building. Barclays analysts see room for the dollar's rally to stall and possibly retreat in the near term 4. They point to bond market volatility that has tightened borrowing conditions worldwide 4. In their view, that strain could push the Fed toward more soothing messaging before October 28, particularly if CPI comes in cool 4.
Reading the odds
One caution applies to all of these figures. Prediction-market prices are snapshots of trader positioning, not Fed forecasts 2. Some of the data was also observed days apart, which partly explains why December estimates range from the mid-60s to the high-80s.
Even so, the direction is consistent. October looks like a hold. December remains a live hike risk, backed by the September projections and minutes. For Bitcoin, the likely takeaway is that a pause on October 28 would offer only limited relief.
This week's inflation data is the swing factor. A hot CPI print would likely firm up December hike bets and keep yields and the dollar elevated, which would be a poor setup for renewed ETF demand. A soft print could open the door to the gentler Fed messaging Barclays describes. That would give crypto bulls some room, but probably not a full reprieve while officials still project higher rates.
