Bitcoin ETF Outflows Hit $679M as Uptober Stalls Before Fed
A week of withdrawals
US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds lost about $678.9 million in net outflows during the five trading days from Oct. 5 to Oct. 9, 2026. Most of the selling came on Wednesday and Thursday, and BlackRock's IBIT and Fidelity's FBTC bore the largest share. 4 Over the same week, bitcoin slid from roughly $86,480 to $82,546, which followed the direction of the fund flows. 4
The week's flows went back and forth. Monday brought $89.9 million in outflows, Tuesday brought $118.8 million in inflows, and then Wednesday, Oct. 7, saw a large exit. 4 CoinDesk, citing SoSoValue data, put Wednesday's net outflow at $487.1 million, the largest since June 25. 1 A separate tally put that day's figure at $484.9 million. 4 The two numbers differ slightly, but they tell the same story.
CoinDesk's analysis gives a sense of how unusual the day was. Wednesday's outflow sat about 2.1 standard deviations below the 90-day average daily flow, which has been roughly $92 million in net inflows. 1 The timing made it worse. The data arrived a day after analysts argued that bitcoin needed strong ETF inflows to break meaningfully above about $87,000, a level that has repeatedly capped gains. 1
From September inflows to October hesitation
The reversal stands out against what came before. Spot ETFs took in about $2.65 billion in net inflows in September. October was down $165.6 million before the full weekly total was counted. 1 Yahoo Finance noted that daily inflows had already dropped from close to $1 billion to $134 million within a few days, a sign that momentum was fading before the month began. 2 The Economic Times also flagged slowing ETF demand as a complication for the October outlook. 3
The week before had felt more optimistic. Bitcoin.com reported that bitcoin climbed to about $85,500 by Oct. 4, which helped total crypto market capitalization recover to $2.99 trillion. It also said bitcoin closed September up 7%. 5 Altcoins were mixed: ether rose modestly to around $2,700, quant jumped 39%, and zcash fell 17%. 5 That report presented early October as a test of whether "Uptober" seasonality could carry through the fourth quarter. 5 The ETF data from the following week suggests that test has not gone well so far.
Macro pressure: oil, yields, and the Fed
The outlook pieces from Yahoo Finance and The Economic Times both point to the same backdrop.
- The rally: Bitcoin had gained about 43.8% over the preceding 90 days. 23
- The Fed meeting: The Federal Reserve meets on Oct. 27–28. 2
- Oil: Prices are above $100 a barrel, which raises inflation concerns. 23
- Rates: Yahoo Finance cited a 64% probability of another rate hike and a 10-year Treasury yield of 5.17%. It argued that bonds now compete with bitcoin for investors' capital. 2
The sources do not agree on how deep bitcoin's hole for the year is. Yahoo Finance described bitcoin as still down for 2026 and about 34% below its all-time high. 2 Bitcoin.com said September's gains had cut year-to-date losses to 4%. 5 The difference likely comes from different reference prices and dates. Either way, the rebound has not erased the year's losses.
The price snapshots also vary with timing: about $83,070 in one outlook piece 2, roughly $84,000 in another 3, and $82,546 at the end of the outflow week. 4 CoinDesk's daily briefing cited one analyst framing two outcomes. Renewed demand could bring a quick retest of the highs, while weakness could mean a sharp drop toward the recent lows near $76,000. 1
What to make of it
The pattern across these reports looks more like a loss of institutional nerve before a major macro event than a broad collapse in demand.
The flows reversed quickly after a strong September, and they were concentrated in the largest funds. That points to allocators reducing risk rather than retail investors panicking. Holding long-duration risk assets ahead of a Fed decision is less appealing when a hike looks more likely than not and Treasuries yield above 5%.
The $87,000 ceiling is now the key level for this cycle, in this analysis. ETF flows were supposed to be what pushed bitcoin through it, and they instead turned sharply negative. That leaves the late-October Fed meeting as the next likely trigger in either direction. Until flows stabilize, the claims behind "Uptober" look more like seasonal habit than something supported by the data.
