Bitcoin Holds Near $83K as AVAX Rally Outpaces Crypto Market
Bitcoin is stuck in a range, and it isn't moving on its own
Bitcoin starts the second full week of October close to where it started the first. Fortune's daily tracker put one coin at $83,408.20 at 7:45 a.m. Eastern on October 13. That is about $20 above the previous morning, up roughly 7.95% from a month ago and down about 27.6% from a year ago.5 Before that, the market had a rough stretch. Bitcoin and ether opened October 9 at their lowest levels in about three weeks. Bitcoin opened that day at $81,690.49 after falling for a fourth straight session, and briefly traded below $81,000 before recovering.4 Total crypto market capitalization fell below $2.8 trillion that week, a one-month low.4
By Monday, October 12, the coin had recovered. It opened at $83,673.01 and slipped to about $83,280 in early trading.7 Some technical analysts treat the rebound as constructive. CoinDCX put Bitcoin near $83,591 and described it as back above an $82,281 breakout level that had been resistance in September. It noted that the October 9 low stopped short of the 50-day exponential moving average.1
The question that matters is whether this is a recovery or just a pause. On the evidence available, it looks more like a pause. Bitcoin held its ground mostly because selling eased, not because buyers came back in force.
The macro picture is doing most of the work
Coverage of Bitcoin's recent moves points mostly to forces outside crypto. Yahoo Finance linked the slide into October 9 to persistently high oil prices, expected interest-rate increases this year and next, and shifting geopolitical tension in the Middle East.4 It also flagged unstable flows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, forced selling and a less friendly macro backdrop as the main tests for the price.4
Headlines gathered on Coinbase's price page fill in the rest. Traders were waiting for U.S. inflation data. Odds of an October rate hike had dropped, but Treasury yields near two-decade highs were still holding back risk appetite.8 A strong dollar and rising bond yields weighed on sentiment. Spot Bitcoin ETFs lost about $681 million over the past week.8 One positive note came from oil. Bitcoin moved back toward $84,000 at one point as crude fell on hopes of a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire.8
The sources broadly agree on what is driving prices: oil, yields, the dollar and ETF flows. They agree less on what comes next. CoinDCX is moderately bullish. It projects $84,000 within a day, $85,000 within the week and an October target of $85,500, as long as the 50-day EMA near $80,016 holds.1 CoinCodex's model expects a gentle decline instead, toward roughly $83,027 by October 18 and about $82,075 by October 25.3 Prediction-market traders on Polymarket, as compiled by CryptoSlate, expect a wide range rather than a clear direction. Earlier in the month they gave roughly 84.5% odds of Bitcoin touching $82,500 and 83.5% odds of it dipping to $80,000, against about 59.5% odds of a touch of $85,000.10
Trading volume supports the cautious view. CoinDCX noted that turnover was much lighter on the rebound than during the breakdown: about 620 BTC in the session it measured, compared with 2.29K BTC on the way down. It concluded that sellers had stepped back rather than buyers committing new capital.1 Real momentum probably needs a high-volume break of the roughly $87,300 level, which has turned the price back twice, according to the same analysis.1 Without that break, the low-$80,000s look like a holding pattern while the market waits for the inflation numbers.
The longer view is less comfortable for bulls. Coinbase lists Bitcoin's all-time high at $126,210.50.8 A year ago the coin was above $115,000, according to Fortune's comparison.5 Even with the October rebound, Bitcoin is in a cyclical drawdown, not a fresh uptrend.
Avalanche is outperforming the market
Avalanche has been the main exception. AVAX gained about 7.2% to $11.09 on October 12 while the rest of the market weakened. Over the week, Bitcoin was down 3.2%, ether 6.0%, Solana 7.8% and XRP 7.3%, according to CryptoTicker's figures.11 Crypto Briefing, citing The Defiant, reported that AVAX gained 49.7% in four weeks, from roughly $7.20–$7.50 in mid-September to about $10.80–$11.00 in early October. That beat both Bitcoin and ether over the period.16
The sources mostly agree on why. They cite the Helicon network upgrade of September 22, which shortened staking lock-up periods, and growing business in tokenized real-world assets on the chain.11 Crypto Briefing put recent real-world-asset growth on Avalanche at $266 million.16 CryptoTicker also connected the move to Goldman Sachs' $105 billion money market fund being offered to qualified U.S. firms through a settlement network that runs on a private Avalanche chain. It stressed that the fund itself is not being tokenized.11
The rally looks less solid on closer inspection, and the coverage starts to split here. CryptoTicker's on-chain comparison found that AVAX's price rose about 12.6 percentage points faster than the capital locked on the network over 30 days. Price gained 48.9% while total value locked grew 36.3% to about $643 million.11 Blockchain.News reported that Binance futures open interest fell 8.47% during the same session as the 7% rise, which suggests leveraged traders were closing positions rather than adding to them.17
The gains faded quickly. TokenPost reported AVAX down 3.74% over 24 hours early on October 13, even after a 5.5% bounce from $9.99 to $10.54 over four hours.12 Blockchain.News put the 24-hour decline at 4.62%, with an intraday low of $9.81 before a recovery to $10.47. That low briefly broke the $10.40 level that analyst Parshwa Turakhiya had named as the floor for a bullish path toward $12.20 and then $13.00.18 Futures open interest rose 11.57% in that same window.18 The overhead ceiling is still the October 7 monthly high of $11.60.11
The evidence points to real fundamentals with a speculative layer on top. Helicon and the tokenization deals give AVAX a story that Bitcoin currently lacks, which explains why it rose while the majors fell. The gap between price and network usage, plus the swings in open interest, suggest traders bid the token up ahead of what the chain's data support. Earlier in October, AVAX fell almost exactly in line with the broader market during a selloff driven by $550 million in Bitcoin liquidations.19 Its independence from Bitcoin has limits.
IceBull's "momentum" is a marketing claim
The third name in this week's headlines is IceBull, an unlisted meme-coin presale. It belongs in a different category from Bitcoin and Avalanche. Most coverage of it consists of paid press releases from the same distributor, which pair whatever a major coin is doing that day with a pitch for IceBull.212224 The project describes a 16-stage presale with 15 scheduled price increases after Stage 1. It promotes "1250X potential" in its marketing.2123
The published details don't support a "gaining momentum" headline. The sponsored releases themselves cite only about $5,000 raised, as reported by the client.21 The sale was described as live at Stage 1 as early as July, and it was still at Stage 1 in releases from late August and early September.2529 Promotional materials also give different Stage 1 prices. One July release lists $0.0001 per token.25 Others from the same period say $0.00001.2630 Both versions cite a planned listing price of $0.025.2526 Promoters cite a SolidProof audit, staking of up to 80% APY and team-token vesting.2630 Even one sponsored piece concedes that the 1250X figure describes potential only, not a guaranteed result, and that no one can know how the token will be valued once it lists.28
The sensible conclusion is that IceBull's appearance next to Bitcoin and Avalanche is a marketing technique. It is not evidence that money is moving out of large-cap coins and into presales.
What to watch
In the near term, Bitcoin will take its cue from the U.S. inflation report, Treasury yields and whether spot ETF outflows reverse.8 A daily close back below about $82,281 would undo the recovery case that CoinDCX laid out. A high-volume push through $87,300 would make it stronger.1 For Avalanche, the key tests are whether network capital catches up with price and whether AVAX can close above $11.60.11 Until either happens, the market is waiting on economic data, and Bitcoin has led neither the rally nor the selloff.
