A single week that showed where search is heading

In the third week of August, the search industry got four updates at once. Google began its August 2026 spam update. Generative UI started appearing in AI Overviews. Websites were given a button that lets readers add them as a Preferred Source. And Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations dropped sharply.11 Any one of these could pass as routine. Taken together, and read alongside what has happened in the seven weeks since, they show how visibility now works: ranking algorithms still matter, but much of what decides whether a site gets seen and clicked happens inside the AI answer.

This article takes the view that the spam updates are the least important part of the story, even though they cause the most short-term disruption. The bigger change is that Google increasingly builds the answer itself, and AI search engines can change which sources they rely on overnight.

Spam updates: faster, more frequent, then suddenly slower

The August update started on August 18. It was Google's third spam update of 2026, and Google announced no new spam policies alongside it.11 Search Engine Roundtable says it finished on August 21.3 Search Engine Journal measured the rollout at 2 days and 16 hours, after March's update finished in 19 hours and 30 minutes and June's in 2 days and 1 hour.1

September broke that pattern. Google released a fourth spam update on September 24 and said it applied globally, in all languages, and could take up to two weeks to roll out.1 That window was far longer than the "few days" Google had given for earlier 2026 updates. John Mueller confirmed that the longer timeline was intentional and not a typo.4 Google called it "a normal spam update" on LinkedIn. Barry Schwartz questioned that label, since this rollout took two weeks where recent ones took two days.3

The sources disagree slightly on exactly when it ended. Search Engine Roundtable gives 4:37 a.m. ET on October 8.3 Coalition Technologies, citing the Search Status Dashboard, gives 1:00 a.m. Pacific, for a total of about 13 days and 16 hours.6 Either way, it was the longest spam rollout of the year. Search Engine Roundtable recorded visible volatility in three waves: September 25–27, September 30, and October 4–6. Some observers said the impact felt more like a core update.3 One forum poster described losing about 95% of Google traffic overnight on September 27, but other commenters questioned whether a site that new and that small could be read as a reliable signal.21

Google has not said what the September update targeted.1 Some commentary assumed it went after AI-generated content, but there is no confirmation of that.6 The useful context comes from earlier in the year. In May, Google clarified that trying to manipulate generative AI responses, such as buying or altering citations, falls under its existing spam policies.17 That means anyone selling ways to game AI Overviews or AI Mode is taking the same enforcement risk as old-style link schemes. Google has also said it does not evaluate third-party SEO tools, and those tools have no access to its internal metrics.17

Generative UI turns the answer into an app

The change likely to matter longest is generative UI. The feature builds custom layouts, interactive tools and simulations around a query. It launched in AI Mode in November 2025 alongside Gemini 3, and on August 19 Google said it had started rolling out to AI Overviews, with full availability expected in the coming weeks.41 Google's example was a search for "ph scale" returning an interactive visual. It has also shown a mortgage calculator in AI Mode that compares loan terms.41

The difference in reach is large. Sundar Pichai said at I/O that AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode more than 1 billion. AI Overviews also show up on the default results page without the user choosing them.45 Search Engine Journal also pointed to Google research that compared generated interfaces with real websites and found the generated versions often won in head-to-head tests.45

Coverage agrees on who is most exposed: sites whose traffic depends on calculators, converters and comparison tools.4146 TechWyse argues that Google is adding another layer between the search and the publisher, so a page can stay visible as a source while sending fewer visitors.42 The measurement problem is real. Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions but not clicks, and it does not separate a generated interface from a standard AI Overview. Lost clicks on tool pages will look the same as every other AI Overview effect.45 Google expanded those reports to all properties on August 31, and they still have the same limits.47

Other interface changes point the same way. Google confirmed that AI Overviews can now expand automatically for some queries, removing the "Show More" step.47 Industry recaps say Comscore puts AI Overviews on about 39% of US desktop searches. The same recaps say Google is testing moving them out of the top position for hotel searches, so placement may differ by vertical.18

The traffic numbers keep getting worse

These product changes are landing while publisher referrals fall. Chartbeat's 2026 Publisher Playbook found Google Search traffic across its network fell 40.2% year over year from July 2025 to July 2026, nearly double the 21.9% drop the year before. Google Discover's decline grew from 6.6% to 34.3%.31 Google Search's share of pageviews fell from about 9% in July 2024 to 5% in July 2026.31

AI chatbots are not making up the difference. AI referrals grew eightfold over two years but still make up 0.01% of traffic, and Chartbeat says they declined across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini in 2026.31 Several analysts flagged problems with these figures. The playbook does not say whether its yearly declines measure volume or share. Its 0.01% AI figure is hard to square with earlier Axios reporting that chatbots made up under 1% of referrals.3136 Relevant Audience also notes that the drop itself is measured, but blaming AI answers for it is Chartbeat's interpretation. The report does not separate AI Overviews from other causes.36

Even with those caveats, the overall picture is consistent. Earlier Chartbeat data reported by Axios showed small publishers losing 60% of search referrals, compared with 22% for large ones.38 Pew found users clicked on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when one didn't.45 What held up in Chartbeat's data were the channels publishers control. Direct traffic rose to 15.9%, internal traffic to 40.4%, and loyal-reader pageviews stayed roughly flat while new readers fell 14%.31

This is why the Preferred Sources button matters more than it first appears to. It lets readers choose a site as a source, and that choice carries across Top Stories, AI Overviews and AI Mode. More than 600,000 sources had been selected by August, up from 345,000 in May.11 Search Engine Journal called it the most practical update of the week, because it works through a site's audience rather than through the algorithm.11 That reasoning matches Chartbeat's: loyal readers are the only part of the funnel still holding steady.

Reddit shows how fragile AI visibility is

The Reddit numbers are the clearest example of how unstable AI citations are. Promptwatch data shows Reddit held 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 to August 7, then fell to 0.52% from August 14 to 17, a drop of 86.4%.11 The first dip, on August 8, came as ChatGPT sharply increased its use of the site: operator in background queries, from 0.37% to 16.8% of searches in one day. The cause of the second, steeper drop is still unknown.15 Promptwatch says its data shows when the change happened, not why.15

The tracking firms do not fully agree. Otterly.ai dates the main break to August 8 and says Reddit fell further to 0.227% of ChatGPT citations in September, 94% below its July level.29 Meltwater's sample recorded no ChatGPT citations to Reddit at all from May through August, even though Reddit ranked second overall across eight platforms.30 These differences come down to methodology, and they suggest that any single citation-share figure deserves caution.

The trackers do agree on one thing: the drop happened only in ChatGPT. In Promptwatch's data, Reddit's share of AI Overview citations eased slowly from 2.37% to 2.10%.15 Otterly found Google's AI surfaces increased their use of Reddit during September, with AI Mode up 22%.29 Some analysts link that steadiness to Google's data agreement with Reddit.27 Reddit is not immune on Google either. Glenn Gabe documented heavy losses for Reddit's AI-translated pages after the May core update and the June spam update, in organic results and in AI Overviews.16

The takeaway

The argument that the spam update, generative UI and the Reddit drop are all part of one story holds up.12 The spam updates still decide who stays in the index. Who gets seen, and who gets the click, is now decided inside the answer: by Google building its own tools, by readers setting their own preferences, and by AI engines changing retrieval methods without warning. Publishers that depend on generic informational content or tool pages are most exposed. The most reliable protection the reporting points to is building an audience that returns on its own.
