A discipline in search of a definition
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, has become one of the louder phrases in digital marketing in 2026. The idea is simple. As people get answers directly from AI Overviews, chatbots and voice assistants instead of scrolling ranked links, brands want to be the source those systems quote. But the numbers behind the hype don't agree, and Google, the company whose answer surfaces matter most, has said the practice is mostly SEO under a new name.
Two forecasts, very different markets
Dimension Market Research puts the global AEO market at $160.9 million in 2026. It projects a 43.4% compound annual growth rate that would lift the market to about $4.13 billion by 2035.3 It breaks out the US at $54 million and Europe at $40.3 million for 2026.3
Coherent Market Insights describes something far larger. It sizes the AEO services market at $1.25 billion in 2026, growing at 18% a year to $14 billion by 2033.4 In that view, strategy and consulting work accounts for 34% of the market, driven by demand for structured content and schema implementation.4
The 2026 baselines differ by nearly eightfold. Their growth assumptions also point in opposite directions: one firm starts small and expects explosive growth, while the other starts large and expects steadier expansion. Even at the end of each forecast window, the 2033 services figure is more than three times the 2035 market figure.
Part of the gap is likely definitional. One report measures "services," which can include consulting, content restructuring and schema work that agencies once billed simply as SEO. The other appears to measure a narrower category.34 When analysts can't agree on where AEO ends and SEO begins, their market sizes will drift apart. That makes the forecasts less a measure of demand than a measure of how each firm draws the boundary.
Google's position: it's still SEO
Google has weighed in on that boundary question. In AI optimization guidelines published in 2026, the company tried to calm marketers who feared they would need to rebuild their content operations for AI visibility. According to a WordPress VIP summary of the guidance, its message was that AEO is still SEO.1
WordPress VIP's own framing largely agrees. It describes AEO as "not a big departure" from SEO, because the work still centers on clear, structured, factual, machine-readable content.1 The difference it identifies is in how content gets used. Answer engines retrieve and summarize material rather than ranking pages, so the goal shifts from search visibility to "answer visibility."1 The practical additions are modest: clean HTML, logical headings, and fewer contradictions across pages.1
Google has also adjusted its tools. On June 3, 2026, it introduced dedicated reporting for visibility within AI Overviews and AI Mode.4 That is a notable signal. Google treats AI-surface visibility as worth measuring on its own while still placing the work inside ordinary search optimization.
The case for a distinct practice
Not everyone accepts the folding-in. Verticality's comparison describes real operational differences. Under AEO, the answer engine picks a passage rather than ranking a whole page. Queries look like full questions rather than keywords. Success often means being quoted with no click at all.2 It also names a different main risk. The danger isn't losing a ranking but being quoted wrongly, such as an outdated price, a retired plan, or a competitor's feature attributed to your brand.2 Reporting changes too, toward mention rates, share of voice per engine, citation sources and answer accuracy.2
Agencies are pushing hardest for separation. AI Search Engineers, a firm based in Amherst, New York, issued a press release calling AEO the fastest-growing discipline in professional services marketing. The release unveiled what it calls the first complete AEO definition framework.5 The company describes itself as the only US agency that meets all Tier 1 requirements under an "AEO Differentiation Standard."5 It argues that most existing definitions wrongly merge AEO with SEO or general AI marketing.5 Readers should note that a vendor selling AEO services benefits directly from AEO being seen as separate, specialized and certifiable.
What to make of it
The most defensible reading is that AEO is a real shift in outcomes but only a modest shift in craft. The way content is consumed has changed: passages instead of pages, citations instead of clicks, and accuracy as a new failure mode.12 The underlying work of producing clear, consistent, well-structured content remains mostly the same, which is why Google can credibly call it SEO.1
For buyers, the forecast spread is a warning. Wildly different market sizes, competing "standards," and self-declared certifications are typical of a category still being named.345 The changes most worth paying for are the measurable ones: tracking whether AI systems cite you, and whether they describe you correctly.24
