visionOS 27 Betas Show Apple Shifting From Vision Pro to Smart Glasses
The last quiet beta of Apple's summer
On August 24, 2026, Apple released iOS 27 beta 7 as build 24A5424a, listed on its developer release page4. The build came one week after beta 63. It shipped alongside matching seventh betas of iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS 27, all available over the air5. The early hands-on reports agreed that the release added little. iOS Hacker found no noticeable new features5. A Beta Profiles community analysis pointed out that IPSW file sizes had barely changed between betas 5 and 7, which suggests Apple was fixing bugs rather than adding features7.
The outlets did not agree on what would come next. Geeky Gadgets described beta 7 as the last beta before the release candidate2. Digital Trends said Apple usually ships 8 to 10 betas and predicted a beta 8 the following week, with release candidates after the iPhone event6. Digital Trends was right. Apple shipped the eighth betas on August 31, including visionOS 27 beta 8 as build 24M5361a31. Even so, at least one outlet was openly surprised, because the "a" suffix on beta 7's build number had looked like a final-beta signal33. Release candidates followed on September 9, including visionOS 27 RC 1 (24M362)39. visionOS 27 then shipped to Vision Pro owners the week of September 1714.
Now that the cycle is over, the beta schedule is the least interesting part of the story. The more important change this summer was in what Apple's software releases say about its face-worn hardware. visionOS 27 is a large update for a headset that has no clear successor. Meanwhile, the rebuilt Siri arriving across the lineup is shaping up as the foundation for the smart glasses Apple has prioritized over the headset.
visionOS 27: a large update with little attention
UploadVR called visionOS 27 one of the biggest Vision Pro upgrades so far, despite the lack of attention it got. It noted held-object tracking, a framework for IR LED tracked accessories, and unfoveated high-quality screen recording14. Apple's own feature list covers Siri AI, Visual Intelligence that lets users ask about whatever they are looking at, curved windows, panoramas turned into spatial scenes, a reorganized Control Center, and Wi-Fi connection up to three times faster11.
The developer-facing changes may matter more over time. Apple now lets third parties build spatial accessories that combine IR LEDs and an IMU for six-degrees-of-freedom tracking at up to 90 Hz13. UploadVR compared the approach to how any company can build SteamVR "Lighthouse" tracked accessories on PC14. A new foveated streaming framework lets an app render local content in RealityKit while streaming heavier scenes from a remote computer13. RealityKit also gains native Gaussian splat rendering14. Accessibility gets attention too. Next Reality reported native eye-tracking control for some power wheelchairs, starting with the Tolt and LUCI drive systems in the U.S.19.
Not every owner gets the same update, though. Both the M2 and M5 Vision Pro can install visionOS 27, but the M2 model cannot run Apple's newest on-device model, so adjustable Siri voices and the improved dictation are limited to the M518. At launch, Siri AI arrived in beta behind a waitlist in Settings, and only in English14. AppleInsider noted that beta 7 brought back references to that waitlist31. Coverage also differs on Visual Intelligence. Apple's visionOS page presents it as a headline feature11, but Next Reality reported in June that its rollout depended on Siri AI's slower schedule19. The safest conclusion is that Vision Pro's AI features are arriving gradually, not all at once.
In practice, the beta 7 and beta 8 visionOS builds were polish releases for the same feature set that MacRumors described in every seeding report: the movable Siri orb, Web Environments in Safari, curved windows, and notifications that expand when looked at35.
The headset roadmap is still unclear
The careful software work stands out given how uncertain the hardware is. Apple refreshed Vision Pro with an M5 chip in October 202541. In June 2026 it raised the price from $3,499 to $3,699, citing the global memory shortage45. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in May that a new Vision Pro was at least two years away and that most of Apple's mixed-reality hardware engineers had moved to smart glasses41.
Reporters and analysts disagree sharply about the future. Ming-Chi Kuo reported in June that incoming CEO John Ternus had approved a roadmap that kept only two products, both of them glasses49. UploadVR disputed the idea that Apple had cancelled the Vision line. It argued that the "late 2028 at the earliest" headset Gurman described is a complete redesign that moves the chipset to an external puck46. Supply-chain reporting points in a bleaker direction. VR.org, citing The Elec, said Samsung Display is ending G-VR, the glass-substrate micro-OLED panel meant for a cheaper Apple headset, by September47.
The late-summer reports did not settle the question. Gurman reported that Apple cut about 100 Vision Pro staff, largely shutting down the spatial gaming team and shrinking immersive video. He also reported that executives told staff that the headsets and visionOS are not going away43. By late September he described next-generation headset work as on "life support." Engineers are still testing about four concepts under the code name N224, while senior decision-makers reportedly prefer an all-in-one design even if it slips to 2028 or 2029. Another write-up of the same newsletter gave it a more hopeful reading, describing renewed work that includes a lighter model and a Mac-tethered variant48.
Here is our reading. The headset is no longer a growth bet, but visionOS is being kept alive deliberately. The accessory APIs, the streaming framework and the enterprise-friendly tracking modes make the platform more useful without requiring new Apple hardware. That is an inexpensive way to keep options open until Apple decides whether a lighter headset is worth building.
Siri AI is the link to the glasses
On iPhone, iOS 27's headline feature is Siri AI. It is a rebuilt assistant with personal context, broader world knowledge, on-screen awareness and a dedicated Siri app10. Visual Intelligence also moves into the Camera app with a new Siri mode9. These features are clearly the groundwork for Apple's glasses. MacRumors reported in April that the glasses would use the smarter Siri from iOS 2725. 9to5Mac described them as AI glasses, not AR glasses, relying on voice and cameras with no display22.
The reported hardware details are fairly consistent across outlets. MacRumors' source described two cameras: a high-resolution one for photos and video, and a low-resolution wide-angle lens for hand gestures and visual input to Siri. It said battery limits ruled out a display or LiDAR25. Gurman has reported at least four frame styles in testing, ranging from Wayfarer-like rectangles to oval designs, in colors including black, ocean blue and light brown29. Apple is reportedly designing the frames itself instead of partnering with an eyewear brand, unlike Meta's arrangement with Ray-Ban26.
Coverage differs most on camera capture and timing. 9to5Mac, citing Gurman, said Apple might limit normal photo and video capture because of privacy concerns22. The Apple Post reported that Apple has even built camera-free prototypes, although camera-equipped hardware remains the likelier direction28. The expected date has also moved later. Bloomberg's May 2025 report targeted the end of 202624. By spring 2026, the reporting described a 2026 preview followed by a 2027 launch26. Recent reports point to an unveiling around WWDC 2027 and a late-2027 release2128. Macworld's roadmap still lists a possible preview in late 202630. Given how consistently the schedule has slipped, we would plan on WWDC 2027.
A market Meta already leads
Apple's case for the glasses is supported by market data. Counterpoint Research reported that AI glasses shipments grew 263% year over year in the first half of 2026. Display-less models made up 96% of shipments, and Meta took about 94% of the total21. IDC earlier reported that smart glasses, not VR headsets, drove almost all of 2025's 44.4% XR growth23. Display-equipped glasses grew faster in percentage terms but remain a small slice of the market. Apple's AR glasses are not expected until 2029 at the earliest21.
The market data also fits Apple's software choices. A display-less product depends almost entirely on how good its assistant is. That puts iOS 27, not visionOS 27, at the center of Apple's next wearable. The eight betas that ended in a September release candidate were Apple's first large-scale public test of that assistant.
What to watch
The next milestones are mostly software. The first is whether Siri AI leaves its waitlist on Vision Pro and reaches parity across the M2 and M5 models. The second is how quickly third parties adopt the tracked-accessory APIs. The third is whether WWDC 2027 brings the glasses on schedule. Apple refined its Vision Pro software all summer while moving its hardware investment elsewhere. The September release candidates closed out iOS 27's beta cycle, and the main hardware question for Apple's next wearable now concerns glasses, not headsets.
