A small patch for a headset in transition
Apple has released visionOS 27.0.1, the first point update for the Vision Pro since visionOS 27 arrived on September 14. The public build is 24M372, and owners can install it from Settings > General > Software Update.2 The update showed up on September 28, the same day Apple pushed 27.0.1 releases for the iPhone, iPad and Mac.89 AnotherApple posted firmware downloads for both the M2 and the M5 Vision Pro, so the patch covers the whole hardware lineup.3 Apple's security database marks it as a recommended security update for all Vision Pro models.7
As an update, this one is routine. The timing is what makes it worth a closer look. The patch landed in the same week that a run of reports cast doubt on whether Apple will ever ship a fully redesigned Vision Pro, as engineering effort moves toward smart glasses.2223 To read visionOS 27.0.1 properly, you have to see it in that setting: Apple keeps supporting its spatial computing platform even as the future of the hardware it runs on looks shakier than at any point since launch.
What the update actually contains
Apple's release notes are short. Its support page says the update provides security fixes for the Apple Vision Pro and says nothing else.5 Apple's main security-releases page now lists 27.0.1 as the current visionOS version and reminds users that installed updates can't be rolled back.4
Coverage of the patch differed somewhat in how it described it. The Mac Observer called it a mix of security improvements and minor bug fixes, while also saying it was entirely about background maintenance.1 AnotherApple called it mainly a bug-fix release that should clear up stray problems.3 MacTech only said it seemed to fix bugs.8 Redmond Pie said outright that the contents weren't known yet, but still told every owner to install it.9 The vulnerability tracker Vulners listed the release with a medium-risk score of 5.7.7
Apple's own wording is the most reliable guide, and it mentions only security fixes.5 The "bug fix" label several outlets used looks more like a habit carried over from the iOS and macOS 27.0.1 releases than a description of anything Apple disclosed for the headset. The medium score fits a precautionary patch, not an emergency one. Owners should install it anyway, but nothing in the record suggests an actively exploited flaw.
The release it follows
The small patch comes after one of the biggest visionOS releases so far. visionOS 27 shipped free to both Vision Pro models on September 14. Its headline feature was Siri AI, a rebuilt assistant that can draw on personal information and work across apps.10 On the headset, Siri appears as an orb you can pin to a spot in the room, and you can start talking just by looking at it, with no wake word.16 Visual Intelligence lets you ask Siri about real objects around you or about content on screen.5
The spatial features matter most for app makers. Apple added a way to turn panoramas into spatial scenes, Personal Environments built from your own photos, curved windows in Safari, Freeform and Apple TV Multiview, and Spatial Preview, which pulls 3D models from a Mac into the room for editing at real scale.5 Safari also gained Web Environments, fully immersive 360-degree backgrounds that websites can provide.10 UploadVR noted that this works through a requestImmersive() JavaScript API and is separate from WebXR.16
The developer-facing changes go further. RealityKit gained physical space lighting, native Gaussian splat rendering, real-time cloth simulation and a Reverb Mesh API for room acoustics.14 Apple also opened up tracking for IR LED accessories, which lets third-party companies build their own tracked hardware for the headset.14 A Spatial Accessories framework, cross-platform ARKit and Foveated Streaming, which streams OpenXR content from a Windows PC or the cloud using NVIDIA CloudXR, extend the platform further.12 Game engines got attention too: Unity PolySpatial and Godot both picked up PlayStation VR2 Sense controller support.12
UploadVR argued that visionOS 27 was a much bigger upgrade than Apple's low-key WWDC keynote let on.14 The feature list backs that up. Unfoveated 4K screen recording of up to three minutes, which UploadVR called one of the most requested Vision Pro features, is the sort of change that helps developers and reviewers show off spatial apps.16
The release still has rough edges. Siri AI is in beta, requires joining a waitlist, and only works in English for now.16 The Mac Observer reported that five more languages are due in October. It also noted that Vision Pro is one of only two Apple platforms where Siri AI is available in the European Union at launch.13
The hardware question hanging over the software
The software keeps growing while the hardware roadmap gets thinner. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is weighing four concepts for a "completely revamped" Vision Pro, codenamed N224. One of them would move components into a separate external unit, similar to Meta's latest VR Glasses.23 Senior Apple decision-makers reportedly see that external puck as a poor user experience and would rather have something close to an all-in-one design.23 Gurman was also told the work is on "life support," and that a new headset may never ship. If it does, it isn't expected before late 2028 or early 2029.2322
The reports don't all agree on this point. Tech Times described the same Gurman reporting as Apple getting back to active headset development after a period of uncertainty, and as development returning to the drawing board.30 Android Headlines went the other way, linking the doubts to weak sales, layoffs and a leadership reshuffle under CEO John Ternus that moved the Vision hardware group lower in the company's hierarchy.28 It also reported that former Vision hardware chief Paul Meade left for OpenAI.28
The more convincing reading is the gloomier one. A project can have four live concepts and still be fragile. Several reports point to the same pattern: the cheaper N100 headset, often called "Vision Air," was shelved, and engineers were moved onto glasses.22 Exploring a lot of designs looks more like a team that hasn't won the argument for a successor than a sign of renewed commitment. Ternus has reportedly said Vision Pro has a "very bright future," but public reassurance doesn't settle where the funding goes.22
Smart glasses move to the front of the line
Apple's first smart glasses are now expected in late 2027, ahead of any new Vision Pro.2426 The reports describe a product without displays that relies on cameras, microphones, speakers and Siri AI, and works closely with an iPhone instead of as a standalone computer.25 Apple has reportedly tested at least four frame styles.25 The body may be made of acetate, with finishes including black, ocean blue and light brown.21 Reports have placed the expected price at roughly $200 to $500, though Apple hasn't confirmed it.25 That's a fraction of the Vision Pro's $3,499 launch price.22 Apple has not officially confirmed the glasses at all.24
The competition is shaping the plan as well. Meta recently introduced $1,299 VR Glasses that weigh about 100 grams and are designed to look like oversized eyeglasses, which raises the bar for what a lighter Apple headset would need to be.27
Why a minor patch still matters
The link between visionOS and the glasses is the main point here. Visual Intelligence and a hands-free Siri that you look at instead of naming are exactly the abilities displayless glasses would need. One tracker noted that visionOS 27 brought both to Vision Pro before any glasses had been announced.29 Reports have tied earlier slips in the glasses timeline to Siri and Visual Intelligence not being ready for that visual AI work.29
Seen that way, the Vision Pro is working as a high-end test bed. Apple is trying out spatial AI, gaze input and computer vision on a small group of committed users, and those features will probably end up in cheaper wearables. visionOS 27.0.1 is a security patch, but it shows that Apple is still maintaining the platform carefully. Current owners should install it. For developers building spatial apps, the bigger question is whether the frameworks they're learning now will carry over to whatever face-worn device Apple ships next.
