Ship with Walmart Lands in ShipStation With Lost-Package Cover
Walmart's shipping perks move into a third-party dashboard
On Oct. 6, ShipStation launched Ship with Walmart. The integration lets Walmart Marketplace sellers buy labels at Walmart-negotiated carrier rates inside ShipStation, use Walmart's seller protections there and manage their Walmart orders in the same workflow they already run.21 It is switched on from ShipStation's Wallet and runs next to a seller's existing carrier accounts, so there is no separate integration to build.2223 For now it covers U.S. domestic shipments only.21
The headline feature is a loss guarantee. Eligible orders that ship on time can get up to $100 in protection on lost-item claims, covering both packages lost in transit and claims filed after delivery. When a lost-item claim is approved, sellers can also ask Walmart to review negative feedback tied to it.21 A feature called Simplified Shipping Settings shows the carrier and service level Walmart recommends for the delivery promise a seller has set.24 To pull in new users, ShipStation is giving Walmart sellers who are new to the platform 20% off their subscription for a year when they turn the service on.21
The coverage agrees on these basic facts. Where it differs is on who is doing the launching. ShipStation's release presents Ship with Walmart as ShipStation's product.21 Chain Store Age and Inside Radio describe Walmart as the company rolling out a new shipping option through ShipStation's platform.2729 Shopifreaks offers the most useful detail: Walmart lets any shipping software provider connect to the program through its API, multichannel tools such as Goflow already have, and ShipStation is simply the largest platform to join so far.30 That fits the facts best. This is mainly a Walmart distribution play, and ShipStation's reach is what makes it significant.
Why the savings claim needs scrutiny
The press release does not give a percentage. It only promises discounted rates from trusted domestic carriers.21 ShipStation's own materials are less consistent. The version of its announcement blog post captured here promises rates as much as 50% below the market rate and refers to both domestic and international carriers.28 MarketScale reports that an Oct. 7 update to that post raised the ceiling to 60%.23 Meanwhile, the release limits the program to domestic shipments.21
ShipStation's site also advertises general carrier discounts of 80% to 90%.43 MarketScale points out that none of these figures compares Walmart's rate with what a particular seller already pays. It quotes CoreTrex's advice that sellers price their top SKUs by weight and zone before moving any volume.23 That advice is right. The program shows up as one more rate in ShipStation's comparison engine, so it only pays off on the lanes where it actually comes out cheapest.23
Walmart's seller growth explains the timing
PYMNTS tied the launch to comments Walmart CFO John David Rainey made in April. He said the marketplace was growing about 20%, with home, hardlines and fashion growing faster than 30%. He also said Walmart had three times as many sellers at the holiday season as a year earlier, along with about half a billion SKUs.41 Many of those sellers are new and have no carrier contracts of their own. For them, a rate Walmart negotiated may be the best discount they can get.23
Fees are a big part of Walmart's pitch to sellers. Walmart Marketplace charges no monthly subscription. Sellers pay a referral fee by category on each sale, typically 6% to 15%, plus optional Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) fees that start at $3.45 per unit.1 By comparison, Amazon's Professional plan costs $39.99 a month.2 WFS also charges extra on items priced under $10 and on oversize goods.10 For merchant-fulfilled sellers, who have no fulfillment fee to compare against, shipping is the main cost they can still control. Ship with Walmart puts Walmart's pricing on that cost in front of them in the tool they already use. Chain Store Age notes that Walmart has offered WFS since 2020 and has been piloting fulfillment of some marketplace orders from stores in Dallas.27 Ship with Walmart covers the sellers who ship from their own warehouses.
Amazon already uses this approach, with mixed results
The setup closely resembles Amazon Buy Shipping. Amazon says sellers who buy labels through it get 12 times more Amazon-paid refunds on A-to-z claims. Protection depends on buying the label through Buy Shipping, shipping on time (measured at the carrier's first scan) and answering buyer messages within 48 hours.31 Sellers can also bring their own negotiated carrier rates and still keep the protection.3135
On Amazon's seller forums, the record is uneven. Some merchants say Amazon covered claims automatically. Others say appeals were denied even though they followed the policy, especially for packages that never got a delivery scan.3436 In July 2025, a seller community discussion pointed to a new "Late Delivery Risk" label badge that removes claim protection entirely.40 Walmart's version sets a hard $100 cap and makes on-time shipping a condition.21 That makes it a narrower promise than Amazon's, but also an easier one to understand. Whether it holds up in practice depends on how consistently Walmart approves claims during the holiday rush. MarketScale warns that a warehouse that falls behind in peak season could lose coverage just when lost-package claims rise.23
TikTok Shop shows where this could lead
TikTok Shop is the clearest example of where marketplace shipping control can end up. In late 2025 it told merchants that from January 2026, all USPS labels for TikTok Shop orders had to be bought through TikTok Shipping. Labels from ShipStation, Shopify or a seller's own USPS account would be rejected.1419 TikTok then announced that Seller Shipping would end altogether. New sellers would have to use TikTok's logistics services, a phase-in for existing sellers would start Feb. 25, and the option would be fully discontinued by March 31.1617
Reports on how that played out conflict. Some sources still describe the mandate as final and call ShipStation-based fulfillment of TikTok orders finished.11 Viral Nation reported that TikTok halted the plan on Feb. 18 after heavy pushback from sellers.20 ShipStation's own documentation suggests the two sides reached a compromise. ShipStation is now an officially approved TikTok Shipping provider, and its TikTok connection supports both seller-fulfilled orders and orders with TikTok-issued labels.15 For TikTok Shipping orders, though, TikTok picks the carrier, address changes are not allowed, and voiding a label requires contacting TikTok support.15
Put next to TikTok's attempted mandate, Walmart's approach is clearly the gentler one. Ship with Walmart is optional, works alongside carrier accounts sellers already have, and makes its case through price and protection rather than requirements.28 The goal is the same in both cases, though. Marketplaces want the label bought through their own systems, because that gives them the tracking data and delivery-promise performance they use to rank and police sellers. ShipStation has now accepted rate programs from two marketplaces, which suggests multichannel software is turning into a channel for marketplace-controlled shipping rather than a neutral alternative to it.
Regulators are watching marketplace logistics
This matters beyond operations because marketplace control of fulfillment is at the center of the FTC's antitrust case against Amazon. That case alleges Amazon ties Prime eligibility to Fulfillment by Amazon, which raises costs for sellers who also sell on other platforms.51 The FTC argues that this makes it harder for rivals like Walmart and Target to attract sellers. Amazon calls FBA optional and says its rules protect delivery quality.52
Sources disagree on when the case will be tried. It was originally set for October 2026. One legal analysis now gives a March 29, 2027 bench trial date.52 Another gives Feb. 9, 2027. Both agree it has not been decided. On Aug. 31, 2026, the FTC and 22 states also sued Amazon separately over alleged hidden surcharges in its ad auctions.
The distinction regulators have drawn so far explains why Walmart built its program this way. The legal argument against Amazon is about coercion: sellers allegedly have to buy Amazon's logistics to get a badge that drives sales.51 Ship with Walmart avoids that problem by offering perks rather than conditions. Sellers who skip it keep their own carriers and lose only the protection.28 It also creates a cheaper path to strong delivery metrics through Walmart's tools, which helps sellers who sell on several marketplaces. That is the outcome the FTC says Amazon's practices prevent.
What to make of it
Ship with Walmart is a sensible step, though not a big one. For the many new Walmart sellers who ship from their own warehouses, a marketplace-negotiated rate plus a capped lost-package guarantee inside the software they already use is a real improvement.2341 The savings figures should be treated as upper limits, and the sellers who benefit most will be those that reliably ship on time. The broader trend is that marketplaces increasingly want to issue the shipping label themselves, and the companies that build multichannel shipping software are deciding to go along with it.
