A busy first half of October across four regulators
In the first two weeks of October 2026, U.S. safety regulators issued recalls for products ranging from commercial vans and luxury sedans to frozen berries, sports drinks, bath seats and gripe water. One aggregator counted 53 recall events posted by federal agencies through October 15: 22 vehicle campaigns from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 20 product recalls from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), nine from the FDA and two from USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).14 In that count, 11 were food recalls and four of those were Class I, the most serious category.14 The same tracker said there were 76 food recall events in October 2025.14 That comparison should be read with care, because the 2026 month was only half over and the FDA classifies many recalls weeks after companies announce them.
The main pattern across all four areas is how many of these problems come from small sellers, online marketplaces and software. The specific products are less important than that trend.
Vehicle safety recalls: steering, software and fire
The largest vehicle recall of the period involves Chrysler. It covers 265,512 Ram ProMaster vans from model years 2022 to 2026 and 2024–2026 Ram electric models. Water can get into the electric power-steering wiring harness and shut off steering assist, which raises the risk of a crash.15 On the same NHTSA list, Chrysler also recalled 16,385 2026 Ram 1500 pickups because their tire-pressure sensors may not warn drivers about low pressure. The trucks therefore fall short of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 138.1 Dealers will inspect the sensors and replace them where needed at no charge, and owner letters are expected around October 27.3
Toyota's recall covers 30,978 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids. A software error in the motor generator control unit can cut power or shut the hybrid system down at highway speeds.49 Reports of the notification timeline differ slightly. One outlet said NHTSA expects letters to start going out November 22, while another said owners will be notified by December 6.49 The fix is a dealer software update.9
The Hyundai recall is the most worrying for owners right now because no repair exists yet. Hyundai is recalling 94,622 2015–2016 Genesis and 2017–2020 Genesis G80 sedans. A power-seat switch can stick, which keeps the seat motor running until it overheats and can start a fire whether the car is parked or moving.68 Owners have been told to park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles. NHTSA says a remedy is still being developed.8 According to the filing, Hyundai believes only about 1% of the cars actually have the defect. It knows of two alleged fires and no crashes or injuries as of October 1.10 Reports agree on the vehicle count and the park-outside advice. The only differences concern the filing date, which one account puts at October 8, while wire coverage dated NHTSA's announcement to October 15.810
Other vehicle recalls are smaller but affect public transport. Blue Bird is recalling 1,590 electric school buses whose high-voltage battery mounting bolts may be loose or missing. GreenPower recalled 94 buses because a software error could let them move while the wheelchair lift is deployed.1 Earlier in the month, Ford recalled 41,748 Expeditions and Super Duty trucks over a contaminated LED chip that can make headlights fail. Volkswagen filed a high-voltage battery fire recall covering 22,524 vehicles.75
In our reading, software is now a routine source of auto recalls rather than an exception. The Toyota powertrain shutdown, the GreenPower lift interlock and a Thomas Built school-bus headlight problem all trace to code rather than hardware.14
Food recalls: pathogens, allergens and a dye labeling miss
The best-known food recall was PepsiCo's withdrawal of 122,021 cases of 28-ounce Gatorade in Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange and Orange Zero. The bottles contained Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6 that were not listed on the label.1618 PepsiCo started the recall on September 25, and the FDA classified it as Class II on October 2.1718 Most outlets said the drinks went to 37 states, but ABC News described the distribution as "more than two dozen" states.161718 No press release was issued, and the recall surfaced through the FDA's enforcement report.18 That helps explain why it was covered days after it began. The FDA says reactions to these dyes, such as a mild rash or allergic-type asthma, are uncommon.17 Practically, this is a labeling problem that matters mainly to people sensitive to the dyes.16
The pathogen recalls are a bigger risk. Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur expanded its earlier frozen-berry recall to more lots of Walmart's Great Value organic blueberries and triple berry blend and Trader Joe's Organic Mixed Berry Blend, citing possible E. coli O145:H28 contamination.19 The berries recalled in July were tied to an outbreak that sickened 12 people. The newly added lots have not been linked to any illnesses and were pulled after traceback work.19 The FDA classified at least one lot of the berry expansion as Class I.11 There is a gap in the records here. The FDA enforcement entry for one lot names only Arkansas, while retailer-level reporting describes distribution across 30 states plus Puerto Rico for Walmart and 26 states plus D.C. for Trader Joe's.1119 Shoppers should go by the lot codes and best-by dates rather than their state.
A second set of recalls involves broccoli sprouting seeds. Gardeners Basics, Eden Brothers and EAK Distribution each recalled broccoli seeds over Salmonella in early October.1112 The Gardeners Basics notice explains the connection. Its supplier recalled bulk lot #W4105 after FDA sampling found Salmonella, and the seeds had been used by a sprout grower whose product was part of an FDA investigation into a multistate outbreak.15 The seeds were sold nationwide through Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, eBay, Etsy and the company's own website.15 That is a reminder that home-sprouting kits can carry the same risks as commercial sprouts.
The rest of the FDA list follows familiar patterns. Bettergoods pasta was recalled over possible Listeria, classified Class I and distributed nationwide in 16,002 bags.11 A cold-smoked fish trio sold by a Brooklyn distributor was recalled over Listeria found by New York State inspectors, with no illnesses reported.13 Several products were recalled because sesame, milk or soy was missing from the label.1112 On October 15, Family Farmstead raw cheddar was also recalled over possible E. coli O157:H7.20
Baby product recalls: a steady pattern of marketplace sellers
The recalls involving infants were the most troubling. Pacific Health Sciences recalled Babies' Magic Tea Baby Sleep Gripe Water, a supplement sold for infants, after tests found ethanol, methanol and isopropanol that were not on the label.1112 The FDA says these alcohols can impair the central nervous system, and it ties ethanol exposure in infants to long-term developmental effects.30 The records list different lot numbers. The FDA enforcement entry names lot 25009CP, covering 395 units in six states, while a consumer roundup cites lot 25122bw sold through Secrets of Tea and Amazon.1130 It is unclear whether these are two separate lots or a reporting error, so parents should check the FDA notice directly.
On the CPSC side, ONTHEWEI recalled about 2,140 baby bath seats sold on Amazon in April 2026 for $40 to $50. The seats are unstable, can tip over and do not meet the federal standard for infant bath seats. No incidents had been reported.2930 This is not a one-off. Similar bath-seat recalls in 2025 and 2026 covered CheerKid, Trankerloop, NFSVLB and Bebamour products. In one case the seller, BenTalk, stopped answering refund requests, and the CPSC told families to throw the seats away.2421
That situation, where a seller cannot be reached and the agency can only issue a warning, comes up repeatedly. The CPSC told consumers to stop using Pvauert infant walkers, which fit through standard doorways and do not stop at the edge of a step. Six injuries have been reported, including three head injuries.2822 It issued a warning about Mbabyjon crib bumpers, which are banned under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act.22 In September, it said the importer of Flyboss infant bouncers had not responded to requests for a recall, even though there were 191 reported collapses and at least 20 cases where families sought medical care.26 Chillife's Montessori teether set, sold on Amazon, was recalled after four choking incidents. The only remedy offered was a $5.40 partial refund, and consumers had to cut the strings and send in a photo.23
Infant formula has its own problems. All Nara Organics formula was recalled after three infants were hospitalized with confirmed infant botulism.21 On October 16, an FDA incident summary still listed a Clostridium botulinum infant formula investigation for 2026.20
What it adds up to
The vehicle and food recalls this month mostly worked as designed. Large manufacturers found defects, filed recalls and offered free fixes or refunds. The baby-product recalls show the weakness in the system. Many came from little-known sellers on Amazon, often based overseas, and regulators' main tool against an unresponsive seller is a public warning.222326 In our assessment, the most important parts of this month's recalls are not the large numbers, such as the 265,000 Ram vans or the 122,000 cases of Gatorade. They are the bath seats, walkers and bouncers that only became known after children were at risk, and where buyers have little realistic chance of a refund.
