What Perplexity shipped
On September 1, Perplexity added a feature called hybrid compute to its Mac app. It lets the company's Computer agent split a single job between large cloud models and a smaller model that runs on the user's own Mac.13 In Perplexity's design, the cloud handles frontier-level reasoning, web search and planning. The local model handles private files, sensitive data and actions on the device itself, and Computer coordinates both sides so the user doesn't have to break a task into separate prompts.1
The feature is open to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers. It needs an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 15 or later with at least 24GB of unified memory.1 Several outlets add that Perplexity recommends 32GB for the best results, so 8GB and 16GB Macs can't use it at all.34 CEO Aravind Srinivas pitched the launch around the kinds of files people are most nervous about handing to an AI agent: bloodwork, tax returns and litigation materials.8
The privacy gate does the real work
Coverage across outlets agrees that the local model isn't the most important part of the release. The important part is the checkpoint that decides what is allowed to leave the machine. Perplexity calls it a privacy gate. Before content from a protected file reaches the cloud, the gate can mask sensitive details, keep the work local, refuse the action, or ask the user for consent.1 An on-device classifier flags names, addresses, account numbers and secrets. Credentials, payment card numbers and government IDs get the strictest handling.1 According to the company's own announcement thread, masked values are replaced with stand-ins before a request goes out and swapped back when the answer comes back.3
Perplexity also open-sourced the classifier, which it trained with its Secure Intelligence Institute.36 A technical breakdown describes the model, called PII-Tracer, as a 0.6-billion-parameter bidirectional encoder adapted from a Qwen3 backbone. It reports the highest character-level F1 score (0.629) among 12 detectors tested, and second place on span-based measures behind GPT-5.6-sol.4 The same analysis notes a weakness: recall drops on very long inputs. Perplexity's fix was a change to decoding rather than retraining. Overlapping sliding windows lifted overall character recall from 0.830 to 0.965.4
Opening up the classifier matters for strategic reasons as well as technical ones. Before this launch, one critic pointed out that Perplexity's local-first agent kept its privacy architecture closed, so users had to take the PII check on trust.19 Releasing the component that decides what crosses the device boundary answers that complaint directly, at least for the detection layer. One commentator argues that the gate now acts as part of the agent's security control plane. If it misses something, or if a policy is too loose, the whole privacy promise fails.13 That reading seems right. In practice, the Mac becomes a protected zone only as long as the classifier catches what matters.
Where the reporting diverges
The broad picture is consistent across outlets, but some details differ. The clearest disagreement is over the Perplexity-built local model. Perplexity's announcement lists three launch models: Gemma 4 E4B, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B, and an unnamed Perplexity model.1 MacStories and Cult of Mac describe that third option as a Perplexity post-trained version of Qwen3.6 35B.56 9to5Mac, quoting the company, says the one-click setup downloads PPLX Qwen 3.8 27B.3 MarkTechPost noticed the mismatch and found matching 27B builds on Perplexity's Hugging Face page.4 The most likely explanation is that the 27B model is the default download and that the launch lineup and setup flow were described slightly differently in different places.
The second difference is how hands-on the gate is. MacStories and MacDailyNews describe the user being alerted and asked whether flagged data should go to a local model, and both note that users can still send it to the cloud if they choose.52 Perplexity's own language makes it sound more automatic, with the gate applying safeguards based on what the classifier finds.1 Jon Staff, who oversees Perplexity's Mac products, described a mix of the two. The app checks every upload automatically and then confirms that the user wants to share the data.10 The safest conclusion is that the system detects sensitive data by default and that the user, or an enterprise admin, sets how strictly it acts on what it finds.
There is also a small tension about who can use it. Srinivas framed hybrid compute as available to all users of the Mac app.8 Every product write-up limits it to paid Pro, Max and Enterprise tiers.19
Why Perplexity is building this
Privacy is the headline, but the economics are just as important. Srinivas has said the Mac is a chance to move token consumption onto Apple silicon, where tokens processed locally cost nothing.8 One analysis reports him describing the goal as getting the most token value per watt for each user, instead of routing everything through the largest server models.9 Local work uses no cloud credits and needs no API key.34 The more work runs on a user's Mac, the less Perplexity spends on inference and the less the user spends on credits. The privacy feature also lowers costs.
Perplexity is also candid about the limits. Staff conceded that fully frontier output will almost always produce better raw results.9 Smaller local models are good at supporting jobs like summarizing, reformatting and classifying, while heavy reasoning stays in the cloud.9 Independent coverage makes the same point: local models are generally less capable and use a lot of system resources on the machine running them.6 So hybrid compute is not a promise that a Mac can replace frontier models. It is a promise that those models never see certain data.
The product line around it
Hybrid compute is the latest step in a fast run of releases. Personal Computer, which lets the agent work with local Mac files and apps, reached Max subscribers in April and Pro subscribers in May.18 On August 25, Perplexity launched Portable Computer with NVIDIA. It runs the entire agent stack locally on a DGX Spark and asks permission before sending anything to the cloud.1520 MarkTechPost notes that hybrid compute reverses that setup: the same orchestrator, but tasks start in the cloud and hand work down to the device instead of starting locally and escalating up.4
That context makes the Mac launch more significant. Portable Computer's main drawback was cost. Critics called the roughly $4,700 hardware requirement a privacy tax, and one competitor claimed Apple silicon wasn't even on the roadmap.19 Hybrid compute runs on Macs many professionals already own, which undercuts that criticism within a week.1 Timing helped too. 9to5Mac and Cult of Mac both note that Apple highlighted Perplexity's Personal Computer as a use case for its new M6 Mac mini just days earlier.36 Perplexity itself recommends an always-on Mac mini as a dedicated local inference box that users can control from an iPhone.1
The enterprise angle
In the long run, the admin controls may matter more than any consumer feature. Enterprise customers can set organization-wide rules for what has to stay on the Mac, what can be masked before cloud use, and what needs user approval. Admins can also audit when information leaves a device.1 Perplexity is clearly aiming this at legal, healthcare and financial teams, and its demos featured an attorney, a financial analyst and a small-business owner working with confidential data.15
Demand for this kind of control appears to be growing. In an October 12 interview, Srinivas said sovereign wealth funds want Perplexity Computer running entirely on hardware they own, with no data access or usage telemetry for Perplexity.17 Hybrid compute is not that fully isolated setup. It still depends on the cloud for orchestration. But it is a sign of where Perplexity's agent business seems to be heading.
The takeaway
The local models are the least distinctive part of this release. Anyone can run Gemma or Qwen on a Mac. What Perplexity has built is a routing system that treats the location of data as a decision the agent makes partway through a task, enforced by a classifier that anyone can now inspect. Whether it holds up depends on how often that classifier misses something in real-world use. Perplexity's own benchmarks suggest it is good, not perfect.4 Even so, by moving private work onto users' hardware and cutting its own inference bill at the same time, Perplexity has made a strong case that cloud and local AI work better together than as rivals.
