Natura-1 Robot Hand Model Brings 50B Parameters to Dexterous AI
A hand model, not a humanoid brain
On October 13, the physical-AI lab Nature Will released a model it calls Natura-1. The company describes it as a 50-billion-parameter "physical general foundation model" for controlling dexterous robot hands and following instructions zero-shot.15 The release says Natura-1 is a mixture-of-experts model trained jointly on language, images, video and action. It was pre-trained on more than one million hours of egocentric human data, meaning video shot from the point of view of a person using their hands, and it runs a 100-millisecond control loop.1 The pitch is that a user can give a robot plain-language instructions and get the task done, even when the objects involved never appeared in training.1
The reporting agrees on the headline numbers. It differs on how much they mean. Nature Will's own announcement calls Natura-1 the "first" general foundational model for the physical world and a breakthrough in general-purpose dexterous manipulation on real hardware.15 Independent coverage is more measured. Forbes notes that the model covers hands only and that Nature Will says nothing about locomotion, balance or whole-body control.1 RuntimeWire makes a similar point: the model's value depends on whether skills transfer reliably to unfamiliar objects and real robot hardware, and parameter count alone cannot show that.14
The skeptics have the stronger case. Natura-1 is a large, serious entry into dexterous manipulation. It is not yet the "instant robot intelligence" the launch framing suggests, and it is not the first model to claim generality.
Who is behind Nature Will
The company is less obscure than its US launch makes it look. Nature Will lists a San Francisco office,1 but RuntimeWire identifies its leader, CEO Ning Ding, as an assistant professor at Tsinghua University.14 PitchBook lists a company called Natural Will Technology, founded in 2026 and based in Beijing's Haidian District. It records a seed round completed on April 27, 2026, with Frees Fund, IDG Capital and ZhenFund as investors.22 One RuntimeWire source is a Sina Finance report whose headline says a Tsinghua-linked startup was valued at more than RMB 4 billion six months after founding, with backing from Sequoia, IDG and CATL.14 A separate analysis of China's 2026 unicorns names "Ding Ning of Natural Will," an assistant professor in Tsinghua's electronic engineering department, among the Tsinghua-affiliated founders behind a wave of new Beijing companies.
That background changes how to read the launch. It does not look like an unknown garage lab beating Figure. It fits a well-funded pattern in China, where academic researchers have started AI "neolabs" and raised money quickly this year.25 China added 73 unicorns by July 2026, and AI and robotics made up more than half of them. Battery giant CATL has also become a common backer of embodied-AI companies. One industry saying holds that almost every embodied-intelligence company has approached it.26
The press release says Nature Will's work covers data acquisition, pretraining, infrastructure, simulation, real-world evaluation, post-training and reinforcement learning. Its team includes foundation-model researchers and senior robotics hardware engineers.15
The data bet: human video at scale
The most notable part of Natura-1 is its data, more than its size. A million hours of first-person video is a very large corpus. Forbes points out that Figure is placing a similar bet through Index, an app that pays people to film themselves doing chores.1 Human hands are the one manipulator for which huge amounts of training footage exist, and Nature Will CTO Haozhan Li has said that is the point of the strategy.1
Others are moving the same way, at smaller scale. Nvidia's GR00T N1.7 is an open model released under Apache 2.0. Its pretraining includes 20,000 hours of EgoScale human video. Nvidia credits a relative end-effector action space shared by human and robot data for improved generalization and better language-following.9 South Korea's Config Intelligence says it has gathered more than 150,000 hours of action data. Its CFG-1 model was trained mainly on over 100,000 hours of human task data.16
If the one-million-hour figure is accurate, Natura-1's corpus dwarfs those numbers. The open question is the "embodiment gap." A human hand and a robot hand are different machines, and turning video of people into reliable robot behavior is one of the hardest problems in robotics.1
Precision is where general models tend to struggle. In independent tests by RoboCurve cited by Forbes, GPT-6 Astra succeeded on 19 of 20 simple block-in-bowl attempts but only 2 of 20 precision puzzle insertions.1 Dexterous manipulation is a precision problem. Nature Will has not yet published success rates, benchmarks or comparisons with π0 or Figure's Helix, so its claims cannot be checked from the outside.1
Speed and the control-loop question
The 100-millisecond loop is the second point to scrutinize. Forbes describes it as fast for a model this size, at about ten decisions per second. It is still slower than ideal for reacting to slips and changes in contact force.1 By comparison, Figure's System 1 runs visuomotor control at about 200 Hz.1 Asynchronous inference techniques such as VLASH, developed by researchers at MIT, Caltech, Nvidia, UC San Diego and Tsinghua, aim to smooth out the reach-pause-adjust motion common to vision-language-action models. Approaches like that could help close the gap.1
Recent research also suggests that scale is not the only lever. An October 8 arXiv paper describes ARC, a reasoning recipe for robot foundation models. Its authors say it raised π0.5's real-robot task success by 82.2 percentage points without new robot demonstrations or foundation-scale training.8 This weakens the idea that 50 billion parameters is, by itself, the moat.
A crowded middle layer, and a funding debate
Natura-1 arrives during a costly argument over where value will sit in robot intelligence. General Robotics CEO Ashish Kapoor describes three layers: frontier models at the bottom, robot foundation models in the middle and job-specific post-training on top. He expects the bottom two layers to merge.1 Unitree founder Wang Xingxing said he had tested GPT-6 on robots with "very, very good" results. He moved his forecast for an embodied-AI tipping point forward to one to two years.1
Natura-1 sits in that middle layer, and the layer is crowded. Skild, Figure's Helix, Physical Intelligence's π0, Nvidia's GR00T and Google's Gemini Robotics have all been marketed as generalist robot models.1 In the past few weeks alone:
- Odyssey launched Odyssey-3, a world model it says controls robot arms and powers humanoid policies with Flexion.4
- Runway announced Praxis-1, a world action model whose weights it plans to open-source.6
- India's Inner Sky Labs released a hardware-agnostic suite of perception, action and safety models while closing a ₹300 crore round.19
- Shenzhen startup XIRRA, founded in July by former Huawei Cloud model CTO Li Yin, raised several hundred million yuan for what it calls a large physical model.17
The money involved is very large. Figure has raised about $1.9 billion. It has also committed an initial $3.5 billion, with intent to scale past $6 billion, for up to 100,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs through Nscale to train Helix.1 Skild AI raised $1.4 billion in January.1 Physical Intelligence has raised $1.1 billion in total and is reportedly targeting an $11 billion valuation.18
The Forbes analysis makes a point worth repeating. If a young lab can ship a 50-billion-parameter manipulation model, the cost of entering the middle layer is falling quickly, and that is what Kapoor predicted.1 Commoditized foundation models would push value toward post-training: making one specific robot useful for one specific job at one specific company.1
What it means for factories and warehouses
The commercial test for dexterous-hand models is likely to come in industrial settings before homes. Nature Will says Natura-1 applies wherever fine or delicate manipulation is needed and highlights long-horizon, continuous workflows.15 Config Intelligence reports clients among chipmakers, automakers and systems integrators, plus strong demand for automation on manufacturing floors.16 Inner Sky Labs describes models that let a factory arm identify, grip and move a component, with a safety layer that halts motion when a person enters the work area.19 Forbes points to the data-collection side as well, including Tutor Intelligence's robot data factory in Boston.1
The argument that commoditization is coming is persuasive. In practice, buyers in logistics and manufacturing will care less about whose base model has the most parameters. They will care more about who can tune a model to their bins, parts and cycle times, with error rates they can measure. A hand-only model also needs a separate system for whole-body motion, so integrators will have to pair Natura-1 with other controllers.1
The verdict, for now
Natura-1 is an ambitious, well-backed release with a distinctive data strategy. Its claims are still largely unverified. Licensing terms and open-weight availability have not been announced,1 and Nature Will has not published benchmark results that would let anyone compare it with π0, Helix or GR00T. Until outside groups can test it, the main thing the launch shows is that the robot foundation model layer is getting crowded and cheaper to enter, and that the hardest unsolved part remains the work of making a robot perform reliably on a specific job.
