Meta's agent now finishes the purchase
Meta's personal AI agent, Muse, no longer stops at recommending products. It searches retail sites, puts together a checkout and then asks the user to approve the order before any money moves.1 When a shopper describes what they want, including brand, price range or availability, Muse looks through retailers and shows suggested listings in its app and on its website. Tapping a listing either takes the shopper to the retailer's own site or opens it inside Muse, where a button lets the agent handle checkout.11 If the shopper picks the agent route, Muse prepares the order and shows an "approval card" with the details. It will also ask for an email address, full name and shipping address if it doesn't have them yet.11
Meta first released Muse in the U.S. on September 8 as a personal agent that runs inside the Muse app, on the web and in WhatsApp.10 Vogue reported that it can work across WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook as well.12 Meta says shopping has quickly become one of the main reasons people use it.11 The company has also announced partnerships with Walmart, Gap, Sephora, Expedia, Wayfair, Best Buy and Ticketmaster, which it describes as an "official fast lane" for the agent. Not all of these connectors are live yet.20
How the payment layer works
Meta did not build its own payment system. Muse uses existing agent-ready wallets instead. At launch it paid through Stripe's Link, which creates a one-time card number for each purchase so the merchant never sees the shopper's real card.19 Meta says Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link's purchase protections. These include coverage for lost or damaged items, price-drop protection, free returns and a return guarantee on eligible orders.9 Vogue made the case that these familiar safeguards matter because they give shoppers a reason to trust an agent with their money.12
Shopify Shop Pay is now the second payment option. On September 21–22, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announced a partnership to enable agentic checkout through Shop Pay across all Shopify stores.195 Shopify shares rose more than 7% on the day of the announcement.18 PayPal has been named as a third payment provider but was not yet available as of early October.1
Reports differ on when Shop Pay went live inside Muse. CNBC lists it next to Link as a current option.1 One agency guide says Shopify confirmed it as a wallet in Muse by September 24.7 Another guide, updated October 8, said no go-live date had been published and that the feature should be treated as announced, not live.5 Reports also differ on the plumbing behind payments. Payments Dive describes Stripe's Link as Muse's payment method.2 TechCrunch quoted Zuckerberg saying Muse uses Plaid's connector to enable agentic shopping.8 These accounts don't necessarily conflict. The most likely reading is that Muse relies on several financial partners for different parts of the transaction, but Meta has not explained clearly how they fit together.
The security design matters as much as the wallets. Meta says each user's Muse runs in its own isolated cloud machine, called the Muse Secure VM. A separate monitoring agent, Sentinel, must approve everything Muse sends to the internet.10 Meta says the agent never sees passwords or payment details, and that credentials go into secure storage that Muse can use without reading them.1012
Personalization is Meta's real advantage
Many companies can process payments. Meta's edge is what it already knows about its users. Fortune described Muse as drawing on years of social activity to learn a shopper's taste before it searches for products.13 Meta's own example is turning a saved Instagram recipe reel into a grocery list.13 With permission, Muse can read Facebook and Instagram DMs. WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted, so there it can only use what the user tells it directly.12
This lets Meta get involved earlier in the buying process than search engines or marketplaces. It can pick up interest while it is still forming in Reels and conversations, then follow it through to payment.14 An agent that remembers your size, budget and deadlines shows a short list of options, not a page of results. For brands, that shortlist becomes the place where the competition happens.14 Shopify merchants are part of this by default. Eligible U.S. stores share products with Meta and have direct checkout turned on unless they opt out.12 Shopify says merchants remain the merchant of record and pay nothing extra to sell through Meta's direct checkout beyond normal processing fees.5
Amazon blocks it, Shopify opts in
The biggest conflict so far is with Amazon. Since September 20, Muse users who try to shop on Amazon see a message saying access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use.14 Amazon says Meta never told it Muse would access its store, that the agent doesn't identify itself while browsing, and that it appears to capture customer credentials.14 Amazon has asked Meta to remove it from Muse.10 Meta's response is that Muse has no visibility into passwords or payment methods.10
The dispute is about more than security. PPC Land pointed out that Amazon's ad business, worth more than $68 billion last year, depends on people browsing Amazon's pages, and an agent that shops for them can skip those pages.10 Amazon has also been building its own agents: it merged Rufus and Alexa+ into Alexa for Shopping in May.10 It added AI crawlers, including Meta's, to its robots.txt blocklist back in August 2025.10 In this light, the block looks less like a one-off security response and more like an effort to protect Amazon's position in shopping, even if the security concerns are real.
Shopify took the opposite approach. It gave agents an approved route in through its product catalog and Shop Pay, so merchants consent through infrastructure they already use.175 Deutsche Bank analysts said the deal shows what Shopify does well: organizing product data, processing payments and handling order logistics. They added that it should ease investor worries about AI disrupting Shopify's business.16
Early numbers, and doubts about them
On Meta's October earnings call, Zuckerberg said more than 10 million people had signed up for Muse in the U.S. and Canada. About a quarter use it for shopping, including travel planning, and the average purchase is around $200.2 He said Meta had to work with Stripe to raise credit limits in the first week because volumes were higher than anyone expected.2 By his account, Plaid told Meta it hadn't seen activity like this on its connector from any other service.8
These numbers come with caveats. One analysis noted that the $200 figure covers only a subset of engaged users, without saying how large that group is, what they buy or how much gets returned.3 Merchants describe much less. DoorDash counted agent transactions in the hundreds. Hilton called its agent bookings insignificant, and eBay called the volume very, very small.6 Chipotle said agents often struggled with loyalty discounts and store hours, though Muse's launch still raised its agent orders by a single-digit percentage.6
Both sides can be true. Muse may have many users who try shopping with it, while the actual order volume reaching any one retailer stays small. Reading the reports together, the supply side is far ahead of real demand for now.
How Meta plans to make money
Zuckerberg said at Meta Connect that Meta will take a small fee on transactions.1 Muse has a free tier plus paid plans at $20 and $100 a month.16 Meta's stated plan is to keep Muse free for most users, take a share of the commerce that runs through it, and charge power users for stronger models.8 One report said Zuckerberg predicted agentic commerce fees could eventually bring in more than Meta's advertising business.6 That is a very ambitious goal for a product that is only a few weeks old.
There is an unresolved question about who pays that fee. Shopify tells merchants they pay no extra fees for Meta's direct checkout.5 So it is unclear where Meta's cut will come from, and nobody has published a rate.4
Where this leaves agentic commerce
The industry has been here before. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in September 2025, then said in March 2026 that it lacked flexibility and handed checkout back to merchants.22 Walmart reportedly saw conversion three times lower in ChatGPT's checkout than when shoppers clicked through to its own site.23 Google has since added protocol-based checkout and its Universal Cart, and Microsoft has rolled out Copilot Checkout.23 The general pattern across 2026 is that AI-assisted product discovery has grown faster than AI-completed payment.22
Muse is the strongest attempt yet to change that. It combines discovery driven by social data, an agent that browses on its own, and wallets with buyer protection. The main obstacle is consumer trust. Only 31% of respondents to a Vogue Business survey said they would hand shopping over to an AI agent.13 Bank of America has warned customers that they are liable for activity that results from sharing login credentials with AI assistants.6 Requiring approval before every purchase is the right call, but it also shows that fully hands-off buying is still a way off. Muse's real test will come in 2027: whether retailers outside Shopify see meaningful sales from it, and whether Amazon's block holds or turns into a negotiated deal.
