The holiday pitch: live is the main event
TikTok is heading into the 2026 holiday season with live shopping at the center of its pitch. The company says LIVE Shopping sales on TikTok Shop in the U.S. more than doubled year over year in the first half of 2026. It also says it expects livestreams to play an even bigger role this season in turning casual discovery into purchases7. TikTok told CNBC that the number of live shopping sessions grew more than 60% over the same period2. Total live hours rose more than 80%3.
The company is backing those numbers with celebrity moments and history. TikTok says more than one million users watched when Rihanna joined Fenty Beauty for a 12-hour TikTok Shop LIVE earlier this month, and the stream generated 53 million impressions7. It also points to last year's four-day Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend, when TikTok Shop sales passed $500 million. Sellers who hosted livestreams that weekend grew sales 84% year over year across more than 760,000 sessions and 1.6 billion views7. This year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday campaign on the platform runs from November 11 through November 307.
Independent data supports a different headline than TikTok's. Live shopping is growing on TikTok, but it is not what drives the platform's sales.
Live is growing, but other parts of the Shop are growing faster
Momentum Works and Tabcut, which track TikTok Shop sales, estimate that livestreams made up only 8.2% of attributed U.S. TikTok Shop GMV in the first half of 202624. That is down from a 14% share in 20254. Their figures put live dollar sales at about $967 million, up from $812 million, or about 19% growth. Over the same period, the Shop tab's share of sales rose from 36% to 51.4%28. TikTok Shop's total U.S. business grew 103% to $11.8 billion in the half, by the same firms' count28.
The two accounts are hard to fully reconcile. TikTok says live sales "more than doubled"7. The third-party tally suggests live dollars grew about a fifth while the rest of the Shop roughly doubled28. One trade analysis splits the difference, saying TikTok's live commerce GMV grew 86% even as its share fell4. The gap probably comes down to different definitions and attribution methods: what counts as a "live" sale, which sellers are included, and how purchases after a stream are credited.
My reading is that both things can be true without either side being wrong. Live shopping is growing in absolute terms on TikTok. Searchable, storefront-style buying is growing faster. TikTok's internal metrics also show users moving toward deliberate shopping: the company says content tagged "TikTok Shop shopping" grew 1,017% from August to September7. That looks more like a marketplace than a home shopping channel. In practice, live works best as a tool for big promotional moments. TikTok's own newsroom credited LIVE sessions with an 80% year-over-year GMV jump during its 6.6 sale event4.
Brand case studies show what live costs to do well
The best live results so far take a lot of hours. Crocs, named TikTok Shop Seller of the Year for 2026, ran a 31-day livestream marathon totaling 744 hours. That effort tripled its follower count and produced 550 million impressions3. Hair-tool brand Beachwaver reportedly made about $8,000 in the first four hours of a single stream, and roughly a quarter of its 2026 TikTok Shop sales came from live2.
TikTok's rules make these hours expensive. Shop LIVE requires a real host speaking in real time. Looping video, prerecorded audio and still images can trigger enforcement, and TikTok's content policy warns that AI content replacing a real product demonstration may be treated as misleading2. Seller guidance suggests streams of at least 30 to 45 minutes before the algorithm has enough data to recommend a broadcast widely, and three to five sessions a week in fixed time slots9. TikTok's take is also rising. Referral fees on most non-food categories reportedly went from 6% to 8% on August 4, 20262.
Conversion claims vary widely depending on who is counting. A Jungle Scout seller survey put TikTok Shop live streams at 1.8% direct checkout conversion, compared with 4.2% add-to-cart for Amazon Live. The explanation offered is that TikTok viewers are scrolling a discovery feed, while Amazon viewers are already searching for a product4. Other industry roundups cite live conversion rates of 8–12% on TikTok5, or a 9–30% range for live shopping in general13. These are not measuring the same thing, and the larger figures should be read as best cases, not norms.
Instagram took live checkout away. Now it sells live reach
Instagram has taken a very different path. Meta removed product tagging from Instagram Live in March 2023, and by 2025 it had phased out native in-app checkout across Shops for most markets. Purchases now finish on the merchant's own website1115. The dedicated Shop tab also left Instagram's main navigation in 202318. Shoppable posts, product tags and storefronts still exist, but buying without leaving the app does not11.
The how-to coverage is inconsistent here. One account says the U.S. retirement took effect in 2024 and that availability varies by region17. Some guides still describe pinning products for in-Live checkout1216. Most recent reporting agrees that this native flow is gone for U.S. sellers111419.
Sellers have found workarounds. The most common is comment-to-DM automation: viewers type a keyword during the broadcast and an automated message sends them a product link1115. Live-commerce vendors such as Bambuser now advise brands to treat Instagram Live as top-of-funnel discovery and keep cart, checkout and attribution on their own sites14.
Meta's bigger move came on June 18, 2026, timed to Cannes Lions. It extended Live Video Ads from Facebook to Instagram, letting sellers turn an eligible livestream into a paid ad unit that reaches people beyond their followers13. Five U.S. live-commerce partners are part of the launch: CommentSold, Firework, LiveMeUp, Sprii and TalkShopLive. The ads carry in-stream product tabs that send viewers to the merchant's or partner's site13. Meta also announced one-time virtual-card checkout with Mastercard and Visa for summer 2026. As of late June, that feature was announced but not yet live13. Reporting also points to AI shopping features with one-tap payment through Stripe and PayPal, and an Instagram shopping agent targeted for late 202619.
The strategic difference is clear. TikTok wants to own the whole transaction, from the stream to the checkout. Meta has decided it does not need to. It makes money selling attention and lets merchants handle payments. One analysis describes Instagram commerce as a discovery and referral channel with a "handoff problem" that Meta has spent a year trying to fix without taking back payments19.
On buyer reach, the two platforms are closer than their strategies suggest. Roughly 47% of U.S. social buyers are expected to shop on Instagram in 2026, compared with 51% on TikTok19. Meta does not disclose Instagram commerce GMV, though. Third-party estimates for Instagram Shopping range from $8.7 billion to $37.7 billion, a spread wide enough to be close to useless25.
How big is live shopping? Estimates differ by a factor of three
The forecasts mostly agree on social commerce overall. eMarketer projects U.S. social commerce sales of about $100.99 billion in 2026, the first year above $100 billion, up 18%2125. It expects TikTok Shop to reach $23.41 billion in U.S. sales, up 48%23. The TikTok Shop path from about $9 billion in 2024 to $15.1 billion in 2025 is one of the few figures several independent sources back up25.
Estimates for live shopping specifically are much less consistent. Coresight Research and Statista-attributed figures put U.S. livestream e-commerce around $68 billion in 2026421. eMarketer forecasts $19.8 billion in U.S. livestream retail sales, up about 35%28. Whatnot, the auction-style live marketplace, puts the total U.S. live-shopping industry near $22 billion and says its own GMV was about $8 billion in the first half of 2026 alone254. A roughly threefold gap between the major forecasters suggests some estimates are counting any purchase influenced by a stream, not just sales completed during one.
I think the narrower numbers are the more credible ones. Live shopping is a real business in the U.S. worth about $20 billion a year and growing quickly, but it is still a fraction of social commerce. Survey data supports that view: only 12% of U.S. shoppers have bought through a livestream so far21. The comparison with China holds the same way. Even at about $20 billion, the U.S. market is roughly 1/55th the size of China's this year28.
What to watch this season
The holiday season will test which model works better. TikTok is betting that celebrity marathons and creator streams can still drive sales spikes on a platform that already handles checkout. Its main risk is that live keeps losing share to the Shop tab, which would make live a marketing expense more than a sales channel. Meta is betting that paid reach and smoother handoffs to merchant sites can win sales without owning payment. Its main risk is the drop-off that happens when a buyer is sent from an app to a website.
For brands, the takeaway from the reporting is to treat live as a promotional tool, not a full sales strategy. Live works best around launches and sale events, in demonstration-heavy categories like fashion and beauty13, and alongside shoppable video and search. TikTok will likely post strong live numbers in December. The more telling figure to watch is whether live's share of TikTok Shop sales keeps falling.
