ICICI Bank Q2 Results: Oct 17 Print Tests Private Bank Optimism
A crowded Saturday for bank earnings
ICICI Bank will report its September-quarter numbers for fiscal 2026-27 on Saturday, October 17. It shares the day with HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, all three having scheduled board meetings to consider and approve results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026.12 Yes Bank is also reporting that day, which puts four large private lenders on the same weekend calendar.4 The bank results sit inside a heavy week overall: 129 companies, including HCL Tech, Wipro, Nestle India and Jio Financial Services, are due to post July–September results.4
ICICI Bank has set out a two-part disclosure schedule. A media call is set for 4:00 pm IST, followed by an analyst and investor call at 5:00 pm. Both cover Q2 and first-half FY27 performance, and pre-registration runs through the Chorus Call platform.3 Recordings and transcripts will be posted on the bank's website afterward.3 The lender has not said whether a dividend will accompany the results.2
The bar set by the first quarter
ICICI Bank enters the quarter after a strong start to the year. In the June quarter, standalone net profit rose 16% year-on-year to Rs 14,804 crore from Rs 12,768 crore, well above a Bloomberg consensus estimate of Rs 13,373 crore.2 Net interest income grew 13% to Rs 24,385 crore from Rs 21,635 crore. Operating profit reached Rs 20,386 crore against Rs 17,505 crore a year earlier and an analyst estimate of Rs 19,278 crore.2 Net interest margin came in at 4.36%, slightly above the 4.34% of the year-ago quarter.2
That performance helps the bank's case with analysts, and it also raises the bar. A beat of roughly Rs 1,400 crore against consensus tends to push estimates up for the next print. That leaves less room for another surprise of the same size.
What Motilal Oswal is actually forecasting
Motilal Oswal Financial Services has been the most visible bullish voice on the sector heading into results. It named ICICI Bank as a top pick alongside State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank and AU Small Finance Bank.5 The brokerage expects private banks' profit after tax to grow 24% year-on-year and 1.7% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 FY27. It also projects a 20% earnings CAGR for private banks over FY26–28.5 For its wider banking coverage universe, it projects Q2 profit growth of 25.4% year-on-year and 9.5% sequentially, with a 15% earnings CAGR over the same period, led by private lenders.5 It cites system credit growth of 18.8% year-on-year and deposit growth of 17%.5
The 24% figure is a forecast for private banks as a group, not a target for ICICI Bank alone. It is reasonable to say the October 17 results will test that call. But no single lender can confirm or disprove it, and ICICI's own number will be compared against its specific consensus estimates.
The gap between the year-on-year and sequential forecasts is worth noting. A 24% annual rise paired with under 2% quarterly growth for private banks suggests the brokerage sees most of the gain as already banked in recent quarters, rather than a sharp acceleration from June. ICICI's 16% year-on-year profit growth in Q1 sits below that sector-level 24% figure.25 On that basis, ICICI looks like a quality pick rather than the main driver of headline sector growth.
What to watch on the day
The metrics investors will focus on are familiar: NII, NIM, loan and deposit growth, slippages, provisions and overall profitability.1 For ICICI specifically, margin is the most important line. Q1's 4.36% NIM was a small improvement on the prior year.2 Whether the bank can hold it while deposits grow more slowly than credit across the system is a key question.5
Asset quality and provisions are the other main factor. Strong credit growth tends to keep profits rising, but unexpected slippages could quickly narrow the gap between forecasts and reported numbers.
Because HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Yes Bank all report on the same day, a strong or weak result at one lender is likely to shape how investors read the others.4
The takeaway
In our view, ICICI Bank's results matter more as a test of quality than of size. A profit figure in line with or modestly above consensus, a stable margin and clean asset quality would support Motilal Oswal's preference for the stock. That would hold even if the bank's growth rate trails the 24% expected for private banks as a whole.
The greater risk is a slip in margin or a rise in provisions. Either would raise the question of whether the sector's projected earnings growth relies too heavily on credit volumes. That question would apply to more than ICICI.
