What Nvidia announced
At Gamescom 2026, Nvidia used its GeForce Now cloud service to show how it wants AI rendering to work when the GPU isn't in your house. The company said subscribers will get their own settings for three DLSS 4.5 features: Super Resolution upscaling, Dynamic Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction. It also said it is extending the service to more Valve hardware.23 Steam Machine and Steam Controller support is due later this year. Steam Deck and Steam Machine get it first, and Windows and macOS follow after that.24
The same announcement included several smaller changes. Firefox is now an officially supported browser. Users can link a GOG account once, sync their library and launch games without signing in each time. Support for Amazon Fire TV hardware is also expanding.79 Nvidia said five upcoming releases will stream on GeForce Now from launch day: CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker and STAR WARS Zero Company.47
These are mostly upgrades to an existing service rather than new features. Taken together, though, they show where cloud gaming is going. The selling point is now direct control over the AI image pipeline, not just access to a powerful remote GPU.
Why DLSS settings matter more in the cloud
Until now, GeForce Now players had to accept whatever DLSS version a game shipped with. If a game used the latest version, that worked fine. If it used an older one, there was no way to upgrade it, and the only option was to change the DLSS mode inside the game's own menu.1 Under the new system, users will be able to adjust the features themselves instead of relying on Nvidia's preset configurations.7 A weekly GeForce Now update described the purpose as letting members choose their own balance between image quality and responsiveness. It also said Nvidia will publish more guidance on DLSS 4.5 overrides later.8
The change makes more sense given how quickly DLSS 4.5 has developed this year. Nvidia introduced it at CES in January, built around a second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution that runs on every GeForce RTX GPU. At launch, Super Resolution covered more than 400 games and apps.13 At the end of March, Nvidia shipped Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a 6X mode to RTX 50 Series owners. The company compares the dynamic system to an automatic transmission: it raises the frame-generation multiplier when the GPU falls behind the display's refresh rate and lowers it when the load eases.1114 The 6X mode generates five AI frames for each frame the GPU actually renders. Nvidia says moving from 4X to 6X can raise 4K frame rates in path-traced games by up to 35%.1317
The last piece arrived at Gamescom. DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction uses a new transformer model to replace the hand-tuned denoisers normally used in ray-traced scenes, and it combines denoising and Super Resolution in one network.4 Nvidia says it offers 35% more compute capability and processes 20% more parameters than the previous model at similar performance. It went to Early Access in the Nvidia app first, with an official release planned for September.34
On desktop PCs, all of this has been controlled through the Nvidia app's DLSS Override menu. Users can set the frame-generation mode per game or globally, choose Dynamic or Fixed, pick a target frame rate and set a maximum multiplier.1814 GeForce Now is essentially getting the same controls. One outlet described it as giving cloud players the kind of tuning they would have on their own PC.9 This matters because frame generation always trades smoothness against latency. In a hands-on test in Cyberpunk 2077, input latency stayed between 45 and 50 milliseconds while the multiplier moved between 3X and 6X.15 Users haven't been uniformly convinced, though. On Nvidia's own forum, some RTX owners said the jumps between multipliers can make input feel uneven. They also noted that dynamic mode only works in games on an approved list.18 When streaming already adds network delay, a fixed preset can easily get the trade-off wrong for a particular game. A manual setting gives players a way to fix that.
The Steam Machine angle
The Valve part of the announcement has the clearest commercial logic. GeForce Now already has a native Steam Deck app and a native app for desktop Linux.4 The Steam Machine also runs Linux, and GamingOnLinux points out that many multiplayer games still don't work on Linux because their anti-cheat systems block it. That makes a cloud-hosted Windows instance a practical workaround.4 An early hands-on from The Shortcut reached a similar conclusion. Games that rely heavily on ray tracing, or that use Linux-incompatible anti-cheat such as Call of Duty, are a problem on Valve's box, and GeForce Now largely removes those limits.10
The performance difference is large. The Steam Machine uses AMD RDNA 3 graphics. TweakTown argues that Ultimate subscribers will get image quality the console can't produce locally, with demanding 2026 games running at high settings above 60 frames per second.5 Using the Ultimate tier's RTX 5080-class hardware, The Shortcut reported 4K at 120fps with path tracing, and said input lag was imperceptible on a stable, preferably wired, connection. It also said the service enabled DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27.10 Ultimate members get RTX 5080-class performance and streaming up to 5K HDR on supported devices. Competitive games can stream at up to 360 FPS.82
Price adds to the argument. The Shortcut estimated that an RTX 5080 now costs roughly $1,300 to $2,100, well above its list price. At $199.99 a year for Ultimate, it would take about six and a half years of subscriptions to equal the cost of the card alone.10 This is a hardware market where component prices keep rising. A streaming subscription paired with a modest Linux box is a credible alternative to building a gaming PC, and that alternative now runs through two companies whose interests line up: Valve and Nvidia.
Where the reporting diverges
Outlets don't agree on how much of this is available now. TechPowerUp, VideoCardz and GamingOnLinux treat both the DLSS controls and Steam Machine support as coming soon. Some cite later this year, and the GeForce Now weekly roundup says this fall specifically for Ultimate members.278 Sportskeeda presented it as an official release that changes things immediately. Even so, its own article says the dedicated Steam Machine app hasn't arrived and that owners currently reach the service through Firefox.1 The Shortcut tested a third route, the Steam Deck app running on the Steam Machine, and expected a native app before the end of the year.10 Technetbooks described the controls as live across hundreds of titles.9
Our reading is that Steam Machine owners can play GeForce Now today using workarounds, either the browser or the Deck app. The native integration, the Steam Controller support and the new DLSS settings menu are still on a fall timeline. Buyers should go by Nvidia's dates, not the more enthusiastic coverage. Coverage also differs on who gets the DLSS features. TweakTown and the weekly roundup tie them to the Ultimate tier.58 Several general reports don't mention which tier is required.
What it means for AI rendering
Across 2026, Nvidia has treated DLSS as a growing set of neural models rather than a single upscaler. One model handles resolution, another generates frames, and a third reconstructs ray-traced light.134 Bringing those settings to GeForce Now shows that Nvidia expects the same models to run whether the RTX GPU is on a desk or in a data center. Streaming viewers then see the result as compressed video.
This has two effects. It makes Nvidia's AI rendering, not the local hardware, the most important part of the experience, even on a device with an AMD GPU like the Steam Machine. It also gives cloud players settings they can test themselves instead of trusting marketing figures. Frame generation's latency costs are still debated even on local hardware.18 Remote players getting their own controls is therefore a meaningful concession, not a minor menu addition.
Next, watch whether the fall rollout arrives on schedule, how the overrides behave over real home internet connections, and whether support extends to Valve's Steam Frame headset. TweakTown hopes it will, but nothing has been confirmed.5
