The short version

In the second half of 2026, the consumer AI story stopped being about how many people use AI at all. Two other questions took over: how often people use it, and who controls the screen where they meet it. The big platforms keep posting record user counts, while surveys show the share of people trying AI barely moving. Over the same months, assistants that come preinstalled in phones and browsers gained ground on products people have to go out and download. One reading fits all of this. Breadth of adoption has stalled in rich markets, and the competition now turns on depth of use and on distribution.

ChatGPT: still the biggest, and turning into a platform

OpenAI's own numbers keep climbing. On August 6 the company said 1 billion people were using ChatGPT every week, up from more than 900 million in late February.1720 At DevDay on September 29, Sam Altman showed a slide with 1.2 billion weekly users.11 There is a catch in how that figure is worded. OpenAI's written recap describes it as "our collective 1.2B weekly users" in a passage about developers building inside ChatGPT, and at least one tracker has pointed out that ambiguity.1441 The safe reading is that ChatGPT has more than a billion weekly users and is still growing, with the exact current figure less certain than the headline suggests.

The products OpenAI announced matter more than the totals. DevDay included more than 20 launches.48 The main one was Dots, always-on agents that keep working toward goals between conversations.47 Plugins can now have their own place in the sidebar, interactive panels and file viewers. Through the proposed MCP Events standard, they can also start automations when something happens in a connected app.4146 "Sign in with ChatGPT" lets Plus and Pro subscribers spend their plan allowance inside 16 partner tools, including Notion and Vercel.48 Several outlets reported on the release under the same theme: ChatGPT is turning from a chatbot into something closer to an operating system for agents.4442

The consumer angle is uneven, though. Most of the headline features, including Dots, ChatGPT Space and Pages, are limited to Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. GPT-6.1 Sol launched in ChatGPT Work and Codex rather than in the standard chat interface.4346 OpenAI also added a $500-a-month Pro 500 tier with 25 times the Plus allowance.50 Free and Go users mostly got developer-facing tools and plugin extensions.49 In other words, OpenAI is spending its newest capabilities on its most valuable users, not on growing its user count.

The economics explain why. OpenAI last reported more than 50 million consumer subscribers, about 4 percent of 1.2 billion weekly users.11 One analysis reported an operating margin of minus 122 percent and argued that the hard question is now cost, not demand.18 OpenAI has also announced advertising, and its August 31 ads post repeated the billion-user figure.17

Gemini: growth through defaults

Google's Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users on August 11. Sundar Pichai called it the fastest-growing product in Google's history.5751 The climb was steep: 750 million in February, more than 900 million at I/O in May, and 950 million on the Q2 earnings call.52 In Sensor Tower's May data, ChatGPT's share of unique AI assistant users fell below half for the first time, to 46.4 percent, while Gemini's reached 27.7 percent.54

The reporting splits on what Gemini's number means. Critics point out that Android sends users to Gemini by default, so the billion includes people who never chose to download it.55 Sensor Tower's outside estimate was only 662 million in May, the same month Google said 900 million.52 Engagement is also lower: about 100 minutes per user per month, compared with roughly 215 for ChatGPT.51 The fairest reading is that Gemini leads on reach and ChatGPT leads on intensity. Gemini's distribution keeps widening anyway. Google says 63 percent of Gemini users now talk to it rather than type.55

Smartphones: Siri finally ships, with Google inside

The biggest smartphone event of the half was Apple's Siri AI. Apple announced it at WWDC on June 8 and shipped it with iOS 27 in September.3336 Apple describes the new Siri as able to draw on personal context across messages, emails and photos. It can also take actions across apps and comes with a dedicated app for revisiting past conversations.32 Wired summed up the design idea: hand the assistant more personal data so it can do more.33

How much Google is behind Siri depends on whose account you read. Several reports, citing Bloomberg, describe a custom Gemini model licensed for about $1 billion a year that handles Siri's heavier cloud requests.3934 Another report says Apple used Gemini to train Siri's models, with requests then running on the device or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers instead of calling Gemini directly.36 A third calls Gemini a fallback for requests Apple's own systems can't handle.38 Even the release date differs between September 9 and September 14.3836 The details are disputed, but the overall picture is consistent. Google's models now sit underneath the main AI experience on both major phone platforms, which one analysis says covers more than 90 percent of the global smartphone market.35

The rollout has limits that will slow adoption. Siri AI launched in English as a beta. It is not available on iOS in the EU at launch or in China, and it needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.37 Apple's most capable on-device model needs even newer hardware, such as the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air.32

Browsers: the standalone AI browser loses ground

The clearest lesson came from browsers. OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas, launched in October 2025, stopped working on August 9. OpenAI pointed users to its desktop app and Chrome extension instead.2630 Reviewers mostly blame distribution: Atlas only ever ran on macOS, and it lost to a rival that was free and one that required no new install.22

Those rivals have grown stronger. Perplexity's Comet completed its rollout to every major platform when it reached iOS in March. A federal appeals court lifted the injunction Amazon had won against it in August.24 Gemini in Chrome reached all US Android users in August, though its auto browse agent is still US-only and requires a paid plan.24 One analysis concluded that agent features in browsers people already use now reach far more users than standalone products.30 Security is still an unsolved problem. Four attacks on agentic browsers were disclosed in August, and a University of Washington study found that four of seven browsers tested let attackers get around basic protections that keep one website from reading another's data.24

The adoption data: a plateau, with deeper use

The surveys back up the platform evidence, but only after accounting for how each one defines "using AI." Menlo Ventures and Morning Consult found US adult usage rose only from 61 to 64 percent. Over the same period, daily use jumped from 19 to 25 percent, and global consumer spending roughly tripled to $40 billion.1 TD's survey puts usage at 78 percent8, while a Prosper Insights poll finds only 40.6 percent using generative AI tools.6 The gap comes from how the questions were worded, not from people suddenly adopting or dropping AI. The Menlo report itself notes that some people it counts as non-users may be using AI inside search or email without realizing it.3

Where the surveys do agree is on depth and caution. Among AI users, 41 percent have tried an agent and 32 percent have let AI act without a final check. Payers are five times as likely as non-payers to use agents.1 Prosper found only 7.7 percent of Americans use agentic AI.6 Prophet reports that enthusiasm is falling even as use rises.7 Across 11,000 consumers in 12 countries, Ping Identity found people comfortable with AI as an assistant but reluctant to hand it authority.10

The forecast for the rest of 2026

Three trends are likely to shape the rest of the year. First, growth in headline user counts will rely more on defaults. Siri, Android, Chrome and Meta's apps can add users who never decided to adopt anything. That will make monthly-user figures less useful for comparison.56 Second, the money will come from a small group of heavy users. Menlo found that the top 14 percent of payers account for 60 percent of spending2, and OpenAI's tiered DevDay launches are built around that group.43 Third, agents will grow first among paying power users and in low-stakes tasks. Wider use will depend on whether security and trust problems get fixed. Right now, the evidence says they haven't been.2410
