Chip Stocks and Bitcoin Face CPI, ASML and Bank Earnings Wednesday
A crowded Wednesday sets up the week
October 14 is the busiest date on this week's market calendar. Three catalysts land on the same day: September's consumer price index, results from Bank of America and Morgan Stanley, and third-quarter earnings from ASML, the Dutch maker of chip-making equipment. Each of them speaks to a different weak spot in a market that sits near record highs. The inflation report goes to rates. The banks go to how higher yields are working through the economy. ASML goes to the AI spending boom that has carried semiconductor stocks. TSMC reports on Thursday, so Wednesday also works as a preview of the biggest chip report of the season.
The main point is that these catalysts are linked. Bond yields sit above 5%, and that one variable ties together chip valuations, bank profits and bitcoin. Whatever Wednesday's CPI report says about inflation will probably shape all three more than any single company's numbers.
The setup: records, oil and a 5% yield ceiling
The starting point looks strong. S&P 500 futures were near 7,817 on Monday after a week of record highs, but they were barely moving, and oil was doing most of the work20. Brent crude was above $106 a barrel because of disruptions tied to the Iran war. That has lifted Exxon Mobil and Chevron to gains of about 45% this year20. Yields above 5% have held back technology stocks. Nvidia slipped before the open on Monday, and because it makes up about 8% of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF, even a small move in Nvidia shows up in the index20. Late last week the 10-year Treasury yield was around 5.24% and the VIX was under 1521. That is a calm volatility reading next to a demanding rate backdrop.
The outlook for rates is less clear than it looks. One Investing.com analysis argued that strong semiconductor earnings were meeting a "more supportive bond market"1. Yahoo Finance's Monday coverage, by contrast, described yields above 5% as a cap on tech20. Both can be true at once: yields may have stopped rising without coming down. Investors who need a more supportive bond market to justify chip valuations will be looking to Wednesday's inflation report for confirmation.
CPI: the event that sets the tone
Crypto-focused coverage was the most direct about the stakes. Cryptoticker called the September CPI release on October 14 the most important date of the week and said traders should expect volatility into the New York close23. Its advice was to watch how the market reacts to the number, not the number itself23. That framing fits the stock market too. Goodreturns noted that the inflation data could change expectations for the Federal Reserve ahead of the October 27–28 FOMC meeting22.
The logic is simple. A hot reading would support the 5%-plus yield regime that is already weighing on tech multiples. A soft one would give the "supportive bond market" view more credibility. With the VIX low, a surprise in either direction is more likely to move prices than markets are currently pricing in.
Banks: what higher rates are doing
Bank of America and Morgan Stanley finish the big-bank reporting cycle on Wednesday, after JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup earlier in the week. BlackRock reports the same day18. Yahoo Finance said the main question is how the largest lenders describe the effect of higher interest rates18. Schwab's catalyst calendar also lists Progressive, Fastenal and State Street for Wednesday11.
One divergence is worth noting. Schwab's US-focused list leaves out ASML11, while Yahoo groups the Dutch company with the banks as a Wednesday reporter18. For anyone focused on chips, the ASML report is probably the more important of the two.
ASML and TSMC: a high bar for chip earnings
Analysts expect a lot from ASML. TipRanks reported consensus forecasts of $12.14 in earnings per share, close to double the $6.38 from a year earlier, on revenue of about $13.16 billion, up 49.5%5. The stock has gained nearly 70% this year5. ASML holds a near-monopoly on the extreme ultraviolet lithography machines needed for leading-edge chips3. That makes its order commentary a read on how much TSMC, Samsung and Intel plan to spend. ASML is also expensive. The Motley Fool cited a P/E of about 57 and warned that its small customer base could hurt it in a downturn3.
TSMC follows on Thursday. Analysts expect adjusted EPS of $4.42, up more than 50%, on revenue of roughly $45.51 billion5. Yahoo Finance said coverage going into the report has focused on expected profit growth of about 65%, and on whether the foundry can protect margins while it raises capital spending2. TSMC's September revenue rose 54.6% from a year earlier, which has already raised expectations14. Lam Research completes the equipment trio on October 215.
The sector context explains why expectations are so high. The iShares Semiconductor ETF gained 11% in September and another 3.6% in the first two trading days of October, and it trades at about 43 times earnings4. Global chip sales passed $1 trillion through August for the first time6. Micron's fiscal fourth-quarter revenue reached $54.23 billion, against $11.32 billion a year earlier, with a non-GAAP gross margin of 87%4. Samsung said third-quarter operating profit jumped 780.3% to $80.2 billion1.
The recent selloff shows how fragile this is
Good news has not reliably moved chip stocks higher. On October 8, 34 U.S. semiconductor stocks worth more than $10 billion each fell more than 1%. Micron dropped 4.7%, Broadcom 4.1% and Marvell 5.2%10. One explanation offered was profit-taking in memory stocks after a report that Taiwanese workers might strike1. Before Samsung reported, CNBC's Jim Cramer noted that worries about Samsung's margins had been weighing on Micron14, even as DA Davidson raised its Micron price target to $3,00014. The day before, analog and industrial chipmakers including Microchip, NXP and Teradyne were among the S&P 500's biggest decliners16.
The pullback did not hit every stock equally. Investing.com found that memory names still look cheap. Micron traded at about 6 times forward earnings10, and Yahoo Finance noted that Nvidia's forward multiple had fallen below the S&P 500's7. But AMD, Arm and Intel were still at steep valuations after the drop10.
Our reading is that the chip trade is no longer about whether AI demand is real. The numbers have settled that. The question now is margins and spending discipline, and whether multiples can hold up with yields above 5%. That puts ASML's guidance and TSMC's margin commentary ahead of the headline beats in importance.
Bitcoin: stuck in the low $80,000s
Crypto goes into Wednesday on the defensive. Prices differ slightly depending on the venue and time. Goodreturns had bitcoin back above $84,000 after a dip toward $80,50022. CoinDesk reported it slipping below $83,000 as the dollar strengthened26, and OKX showed about $82,929 late Monday24. Whichever figure you use, bitcoin is about 34% below its all-time high of roughly $126,20024.
Institutional demand looks weaker. FXStreet reported $681.1 million in net outflows from spot bitcoin ETFs last week, which ended three straight weeks of inflows29. CoinDesk separately put recent ETF outflows above $600 million26. Cryptoticker pointed to $85,000 as the level that would turn the short-term picture positive, and warned that a break below $80,000 could open the mid-$70,000s23. It also flagged nine straight days of ether ETF outflows23. Goodreturns attributed the cautious rebound to a stronger dollar, high bond yields and uncertainty about the Fed22.
Those are the same pressures weighing on chip stocks. That is why we expect bitcoin to trade Wednesday mostly as a rate-sensitive risk asset, not on crypto-specific news. Stocks tied to crypto show the same pattern. Bitmine Immersion, the ether-treasury company, fell almost 7% on October 717, even as chairman Tom Lee forecast the largest crypto bull market ever29.
What to watch
The order of events matters. CPI comes before the opening bell. ASML and the banks report around the same time. TSMC follows on Thursday. A benign inflation reading together with confident capital-spending guidance from ASML could push semiconductors back toward their September highs and help bitcoin attempt $85,000. A hot CPI print would likely push yields higher again and make even strong chip results harder to reward. With the S&P 500 near records and volatility low, the market has little cushion if Wednesday's data disappoints.
