ChatGPT Intelligent UI: GPT-6 Brings Interactive Answers to All
OpenAI has begun putting GPT-6 into the hands of every ChatGPT user, and the bigger change may be how its answers look. Alongside the model, the company is shipping a feature called Intelligent UI. It lets responses arrive as charts, forms, buttons and small working tools instead of blocks of text. There is one notable exception at the top end of the product line.
What shipped, and to whom
The rollout began on October 7, 2026. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers got access first, and Free and Go users followed on October 8 1234. OpenAI frames this as a release for the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT weekly 1. One outlet described the affected audience more cautiously as "hundreds of millions of users" 2. GPT-6 models had already reached paying customers the previous month, so this is a broadening of availability rather than a debut 1.
The model each user gets depends on their plan. Paid tiers run GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go tiers run GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says both are tuned for everyday conversation 134. These are versions specific to the Chat tab. They are distinct from the Sol and Luna variants already used in ChatGPT's Work tab, and the models behind Work and Codex are unchanged by this release 3.
How Intelligent UI changes an answer
All the reports describe the feature the same way. OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to decide, question by question, whether a response should be text, visuals or interactive elements 14. Comparisons can be laid out side by side, and explanations can become interactive diagrams 14. When plain prose is the better fit, the model is supposed to use it 1.
The examples range from practical to playful:
- calculators, including a savings calculator 24
- bill splitters 2
- comparison tables 2
- small games built directly inside the chat 24
Users who prefer the old style can switch to simpler answers 3.
One report adds a latency claim the others don't cover. According to The Decoder, GPT-6 can begin responding while it is still reasoning, which cuts wait times by 44 percent 4.
The Pro reasoning carve-out
The main caveat sits at the top of the lineup. GPT-6 Astra remains OpenAI's most capable model. It powers ChatGPT's persistent agents and the Pro reasoning option 3. According to OpenAI's help documentation as reported by Dealntech, Pro reasoning is the one place on a paid plan where Intelligent UI does not appear 3.
OpenAI's stated reasoning for this isn't covered. One plausible reading is that deep-reasoning sessions are long, careful, text-heavy work where interactive widgets add little and could complicate output. Another is that pairing Astra with generated interfaces simply isn't ready. Either way, the result is that free users may get flashier answers than people paying for the most expensive reasoning mode.
The DevDay backdrop
The consumer launch arrived alongside OpenAI's DevDay 2026, which the company says included more than 20 announcements spanning GPT-6 Astra, ChatGPT, Codex, APIs and security tooling 5. The day before the Intelligent UI rollout, OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol. The company calls it a major upgrade to GPT-6 Sol, with strong performance on agentic coding, computer use and professional work 5. It also promoted an "Astra Ultrafast" offering available across ChatGPT, Codex and the API 5.
This creates a two-track picture:
- Developer and professional products are getting more capable models aimed at autonomous work.
- The mass-market Chat tab is getting a redesign of how answers are presented.
Why it matters
Tech Insider puts the launch in competitive terms. Over the past year, OpenAI has faced comparisons with rivals whose chatbots increasingly produce visual, app-like responses 2. Shipping GPT-6 and Intelligent UI together signals a bet that interface design will matter as much as raw model capability in the next phase of competition 2.
That framing seems right. For most of ChatGPT's enormous audience, the differences between model generations are hard to notice. A bill splitter that appears ready to use, or a comparison laid out as a table, is immediately visible. In that sense, Intelligent UI is OpenAI's attempt to make model progress obvious to casual users.
The open questions are practical:
- Format judgment: Will the model reliably choose the right format, or will it add widgets to questions that only needed a sentence?
- Opt-out use: How many users will turn to the simpler-answers setting 3?
- Pro gap: How long will the Pro reasoning exclusion last 3?
With a staggered but fast rollout across every tier, the answers should come quickly.
