What Bitfinex flagged
Bitfinex, the cryptocurrency exchange, published an analysis on October 30 examining the corporate bitcoin treasury trend. It concluded that the sector's holdings are large and that the financing behind them is becoming fragile. 24 Citing a count by industry tracker SatsIntel, the exchange said 180 publicly listed companies now hold roughly 1.3 million BTC. That is about 6.2% of bitcoin's hard-capped 21 million supply. 23 The figure circulated widely after Bitfinex posted it on social media. 10
Strategy dominates that total with 848,517 BTC, about two-thirds of all corporate holdings. 28 Bitfinex's concern was less about how much has been bought than about how purchases get funded from here. Several firms now rely on preferred stock that pays high dividends. If investors demand steeper discounts on those shares, raising new capital gets harder. In a worst case, companies might have to sell bitcoin to keep paying dividends. 134
How the preferred-share loop works
The model is simple. A treasury company sells income-paying preferred shares, uses the proceeds to buy bitcoin, and repeats the process. 3 Demand for those shares depends on their market price and dividend rate. 4 If the shares trade well below their stated value, each new issue raises less money and costs more relative to what it brings in. 14 Bitfinex described this as a loop that could break, a framing several outlets repeated. 8
Strategy's STRC preferred is the clearest example. It closed at $99.34 on October 29, just under its $100 stated value. 2 That is a sharp recovery from a June low of $71.25. 5 Shareholders approved moving STRC to daily dividend record dates starting November 1. The company says more frequent payouts should reduce the price swings that cluster around ex-dividend dates. 38 Weekend payments will be grouped under settlement rules. 2 Strategy also plans daily dividends for its STRF, STRK and STRD preferreds beginning in January 2027. 45
Strive, a newer entrant, has followed the same playbook. It already pays daily dividends on its SATA preferred, which carries a variable 13% rate. Its SATS shares offer 15% annually. 5 In October Strive raised $630 million through a discounted SATS offering. 56 It bought 6,182 BTC between October 17 and 23 for about $511.5 million, bringing its holdings to 43,000 BTC. 23 Its cash reserves stood at $504.4 million as of October 23. 5
Why the premium matters
Bitfinex's warning makes more sense alongside the broader erosion of treasury-company valuations. An analysis from Samara Asset Group found that premiums compressed through 2025 and 2026. A growing number of firms traded below the value of their bitcoin, including 26 of 168 tracked companies at one point. 11 Strategy's enterprise-value mNAV fell below 1.0 in June 2026, when bitcoin traded near $60,000. 11
That shift explains the move to preferred stock in the first place. When common equity trades at a premium, issuing shares to buy bitcoin adds value for existing holders. When the premium disappears, that route closes. Companies then turn to debt or preferred stock, which create claims senior to common shareholders. 11 Strategy's own history shows the swing: its mNAV hit 3.89x in November 2024, then dropped below 1 in 2026. Over the six months to February 2026 its shares fell around 70%. 12 In July 2026 the company redefined its metrics around "net bitcoin per share," which subtracts preferred stock and out-of-the-money convertible debt. Under that measure, a share price that looked like a discount sat at roughly parity. 12 Samara also noted that different mNAV methods can show the same company at a discount or a premium. 11
The price floor question
All of this depends on bitcoin's price. Glassnode data puts treasury companies' average cost near $80,000 per coin. Bitcoin has closed above that level consistently since September 18, which keeps the group in profit. 9 Even so, these firms have barely resumed buying. On October 15 bitcoin briefly fell to $79,676 before closing at $82,131. 9 Analysts are split on whether that clustered cost basis acts as support or as a trigger for selling if it breaks. 9
Reading the situation
The coverage agrees on the core facts: the 1.3 million BTC total, Strategy's share of it, and the preferred-share mechanics. 17 Where outlets differ is mostly tone. Some present the accumulation as evidence of growing institutional confidence. 10 Others focus on the funding risk and on investors weighing risk against reward. 6
The more cautious reading looks better supported. Daily dividends are a sensible way to steady preferred-share prices, but they do not change the underlying arithmetic. The model works only while income investors keep buying near par and bitcoin stays above the sector's cost basis. Bitfinex's point is that both conditions are now close to their limits.
