Bitcoin ETF Inflows Reverse After $2.4 Billion September Week
A record week that peaked on its first day
US spot bitcoin ETFs pulled in about $2.4 billion in net inflows in the week ending September 25, 2026. That was the funds' biggest week since October 2025, and it pushed their 2026 year-to-date flows back above zero.410 The weekly total is the number in the headlines. The daily figures behind it tell a different story, and it now looks like the more accurate one.
Monday, September 21 brought in $999 million on its own, the largest single day since October 6, 2025, and the ninth-largest since the funds launched in January 2024.4 After that, inflows shrank every day: $714.7 million on Tuesday, $347 million on Wednesday, $190.6 million on Thursday and $134.5 million on Friday.310 Friday's figure was about 87 percent below Monday's.1 The slowdown continued into the following week. Only $31 million came in on September 28, about 97 percent below the peak.2
So the week was a single burst of demand at the start, not a steady build. Reporting on the week agrees on that point, even where outlets frame it differently.
Where the reporting agrees and where it differs
The main figures line up across outlets. Most put the weekly total at $2.4 billion, the year-to-date balance at about $934 million, and cumulative net inflows since launch at roughly $57.6 billion.279 The swing in 2026 was large: in mid-July the funds were about $5.8 billion in net outflows for the year.310
The details vary more. One tally counted $2.39 billion for the week. Another, from The Cryptonomist, counted six straight inflow days worth $2.84 billion and put the year-to-date balance just under $800 million.1 Toobit counted a seven-session run from September 17 to 25 worth about $3 billion.4 These gaps come from different start dates and data sources, and they don't change the overall picture.
The tone is where coverage really splits. Some trading-focused outlets called the week a decisive return of institutional demand and argued that ETFs now form part of bitcoin's demand floor.6 Crypto Briefing focused on supply, reporting that about 35,800 BTC left exchange wallets that week.5 More cautious pieces pointed out that weekly ETF trading volume actually fell from $16.2 billion to $15 billion, and that bitcoin's price fell about 3 percent late in the week while the money was still coming in.37 In hindsight, the cautious reading was closer to right.
October: the inflows turn into outflows
The week ending October 2 still showed a net inflow, but only about $241 million, roughly a tenth of the record week.8 Then flows reversed. In the week of October 5–9, spot bitcoin ETFs lost about $679 million to $681 million. That was the largest weekly outflow since June and ended a three-week run of inflows.3435 Most of it came on October 7, when about $485 million to $487 million left the funds, the worst day since late June. Another $244 million left the next day.3640 Fidelity's FBTC lost the most, roughly $380 million over the week, followed by ARKB at about $207 million.34
The outflows continued. The funds lost $65.4 million on October 12, all of it from BlackRock's IBIT.40 On October 14 they lost $261.5 million, with FBTC down $152.7 million and IBIT down $110.9 million.33 For the week ending October 16, one count puts net withdrawals near $145 million on more than $7.5 billion in trading volume.32 By October 14, October was about $540 million in net outflows, after net inflows of $2.6 billion in September and $3.5 billion in August.33
The answer to whether momentum has faded is yes. The money that arrived in late September hasn't kept coming. Bitcoin is trading near $82,000, down from above $87,000 during the late-September rally.323
Some perspective is useful. Total ETF assets are about $105 billion and cumulative inflows are still close to $57 billion, so October's outflows are small compared with the asset base.3233 Some market observers think heavy trading combined with modest outflows may mean weaker holders have already sold. That is an interpretation, not something the data shows.32
Why the money moved: macro, not crypto-specific news
The likeliest explanation for both the inflows and the reversal is macroeconomic. Bloomberg Intelligence's Eric Balchunas linked the late-September surge partly to a US Treasury plan to buy back more long-dated bonds.4 Cryptowisser noted that this is his interpretation, not a proven cause.10 During the October outflows, market participants pointed to high Treasury yields, inflation worries and a general retreat from risk.34 CoinReporter linked bitcoin's drop below $84,000 to tanker attacks near Hormuz that pushed up oil prices and yields.34 Core inflation is reported at 2.6 percent, still above the Fed's target, and Treasury yields hit 24-year highs in the week ending October 9.13
Read together, this suggests ETF buyers are reacting to interest rates and liquidity much as other investors in risky assets are. When bond-market conditions eased, money came in. When yields jumped, it left.
Bitcoin treasury companies keep buying
Publicly listed bitcoin treasury companies, which hold bitcoin as a main balance-sheet asset, have kept buying through the ETF swings. Strategy held 848,250 BTC as of October 12 after adding 250 BTC.1115 Its total cost is about $64 billion, at an average of roughly $75,441 per coin.1216 Strive bought 3,311 BTC on October 9, worth about $280 million.11 It also filed to raise $500 million through a new class of preferred shares, intended for more bitcoin purchases.13 Figures for Strive's total holdings differ between outlets, from about 29,462 BTC to 35,595 BTC, depending on which purchases each tally includes.1615 Japan's Metaplanet ended the third quarter with 44,000 BTC after selling 10,000 coins and buying back 11,000.16 One tracker counts 173 public companies holding about 1.3 million BTC, roughly 6.2 percent of all bitcoin.11
Buying more bitcoin has not made shareholders better off per share, though. As of October 4, Strategy reported a year-to-date "BTC Yield" of negative 3.7 percent. That means the bitcoin backing each share has fallen, because the company issued new shares and pays financing costs.12 Its USD reserve also fell from $5.02 billion to $4.88 billion as it paid preferred dividends and interest.12 Several major treasury companies trade near or below the value of their bitcoin. Twenty One Capital and Metaplanet had mNAV ratios of 0.73 and 0.78 in late September, meaning their stock was worth less than the bitcoin they hold.17
MSCI moves to drop treasury companies from its indexes
The sector's biggest problem this month is a rule change, not market flows. MSCI approved new eligibility rules for its global stock indexes on October 15. Strategy and Metaplanet could be removed after the close on November 30, 2026.14 Trillions of dollars in passive funds track MSCI indexes and must sell any stock that is removed, regardless of what fund managers think of the company.18 Removal would not force Strategy or Metaplanet to sell any bitcoin. It does put pressure on their share prices, and over time it could make it harder for these companies to raise money.18
This is the most important point for crypto company stocks. Treasury companies have been a steady source of bitcoin buying while ETF flows swing back and forth. If their access to equity markets narrows and their shares keep trading below the value of their bitcoin, that buying could slow just as ETF demand has weakened.
Congress stalls, so regulators act on their own
Washington is moving forward, but through regulators rather than new laws. The CLARITY Act, which would split crypto oversight between the SEC and CFTC, failed a Senate procedural vote 49–50 on September 15, short of the 60 votes needed.2228 Reporting says the main disputes were ethics rules on officials' crypto holdings and whether stablecoins should be allowed to pay yield. The planned SEC/CFTC split itself was not the sticking point.2830 With the Senate out until November 9, the bill will probably have to be reintroduced in 2027.21
Regulators are filling the gap. The SEC proposed Regulation Crypto Assets in August, with comments due October 20.22 On October 1 it proposed custody rules that would let state-chartered trust companies act as qualified custodians for crypto.26 The CFTC published an advance notice of rulemaking on October 5 for a new category of crypto exchange; comments are due December 14.26 Rules made by agencies are easier for future commissions to undo than laws passed by Congress, which leaves some long-term uncertainty in place.21
The bottom line
The $2.4 billion week was real, but it was a short burst of buying in response to a brief easing in bond markets, not the start of a lasting trend. October's outflows confirm that ETF demand is tracking yields and liquidity. Treasury companies are still buying, but their per-share results are weak, many trade below their bitcoin holdings, and the MSCI deadline is about six weeks away. Unless ETF inflows pick up again, the market is relying on the buyers that look the most financially stretched.
