A split-screen session for crypto markets

Bitcoin spent mid-October going nowhere in particular. On October 14, the asset hovered around $83,500 ahead of US inflation data, close to but still below a resistance band of roughly $84,000 to $85,000.1418 Around that flat price, though, money moved sharply. Spot bitcoin ETFs logged their strongest session in days, a Bitcoin-compatible token called Bitway (BTW) went vertical, Optimism's OP token rallied on a concrete infrastructure deal, and banks and regulators kept building the custody infrastructure that institutional crypto depends on.

These stories differ in quality. The ETF flows and the custody developments point to slow structural change. The Bitway rally looks like a market-microstructure event with a price chart on top of it. Optimism falls in between: a real business development set against a token that is still deeply depressed.

ETF inflows: a good day in a bad month

US spot bitcoin ETFs took in about $175.6 million to $175.7 million in net inflows on October 13, depending on the tracker.56 Fidelity's FBTC led with roughly $103 million and BlackRock's IBIT added about $66 million, and no fund reported outflows that day.5 Total net assets across the funds came to roughly $106.98 billion.11

One good session doesn't change the month. The inflow followed a $65.4 million outflow on October 12.26 Before that, October 7 and 8 together drained about $731 million, and the October 7 exit was the funds' worst day since June.107 Trackers disagree on the monthly tally. One count puts October at about a $278 million net outflow even after the October 13 rebound.6 Another showed roughly $454 million out through October 12.2 A third reported $386 million out through the first seven trading days.7 Differences in data vendors and reporting cutoffs probably explain the gaps. Every count shows October in net outflow so far, with sharp swings in both directions.

The longer pattern matters more. A nine-session inflow streak worth about $3 billion ran through late September. It started after the Senate's failed cloture vote on the CLARITY Act set off heavy outflows in mid-September.78 Cumulative net inflows since the January 2024 launch are around $57 billion.210 Some analysts argue that hedge funds' basis trades and macro "debasement" positioning drive a meaningful share of these flows, so headline inflows may overstate long-term conviction.3 With flows reversing three times in five sessions, the October 13 number looks like the market working through rate and inflation risk, not a new trend.10

Other crypto ETFs show where institutional appetite has narrowed. Ethereum ETFs lost about $542 million in a single week.10 XRP funds logged zero net flow for three straight sessions.6 Bitcoin is still the main asset institutions want through regulated wrappers, even on weak days.

Bitway: big gains in a thinly traded token

BTW was the day's best-performing large-cap token, up close to 40% in one session and about 250% over a month, trading near $2.50.1211 It also has the least reliable numbers of the day. Reported figures vary widely. One account put its market value near $4 billion.12 Another, a day earlier, put it at $4.94 billion.15 A third cited about $7.26 billion at an intraday record of $2.77.17 Thirty-day gains were reported anywhere from 148% to 255%, depending on the data snapshot.151917

The bigger issue is ownership and liquidity. CoinMarketCap data cited in coverage shows the top 10 addresses controlling more than 96% of supply.12 Another report cites a single wallet holding 78% of the 10 billion token supply and the top 33 wallets holding 99.74%.19 Only about 27% of the maximum supply circulates.15 Turnover is thin: one analysis estimated that a $240,000 order equals one percent of a full day's trading.20 At one point BTW was quoted 43% lower on DigiFinex, with no bids in that order book.17

Explanations for the rally don't agree. One report credited payment-focused partnerships.16 Another found no project announcement that explains the jump, and noted that a staking promotion offering 8% in USDT had expired on September 1.17 The project describes itself as a Bitcoin-compatible layer-1 chain.20 That pitch fits current demand for Bitcoin-adjacent infrastructure, but it doesn't explain a doubling within weeks.14

The weight of the evidence suggests a squeeze in a concentrated, illiquid token, not a sign of broad demand. Traders cited the relative strength index above 80, eight straight green daily candles and a possible double top near $2.75 to $2.80.12 Even some short-sellers warned others to keep positions small, because heavy bearish positioning can feed further squeezes.11 For readers following the "crypto companies market," Bitway shows that market capitalization rankings can be misleading when nearly all of a token's supply sits in a handful of wallets.

Optimism: a business deal moves a depressed token

OP's rally rests on firmer ground. The token jumped as much as 19.4% to about $0.162 after Uniswap said its Unichain network would hand production operations to OP Enterprise, Optimism's managed-chain service.3234 Trading volume rose about 128% to roughly $226 million.31 The token gave back part of the gain and later traded around $0.15 to $0.156.3437

Under the deal, Optimism will run Unichain's sequencers, RPC services, monitoring and incident response. The testnet moved on October 13, and the mainnet cutover is scheduled for October 29.3235 Chain IDs, contracts and Uniswap deployments stay the same. The move also prepares Unichain for bridge-free ETH transfers with other OP Stack chains once native interoperability goes live.35 Optimism already directs half of net Superchain sequencer revenue to monthly OP buybacks under a 12-month pilot that began in February 2026, so more chains running on its infrastructure could eventually matter for the token.35

The rally is still small next to OP's history. The token remains about 68% below its level a year ago and roughly 97% below its all-time high.34 OP's 64% gain over the past month follows a September jump tied to Upgrade 20 and fault-proof changes.38 Overall, the market is starting to value Optimism as a business that operates other companies' chains, a story that is easier to verify than Bitway's.

Custody becomes the institutional bottleneck

The most important development for regulation and custody came on October 1. The SEC proposed a crypto custody framework for registered investment advisers and regulated funds.22 It would allow conditional self-custody when no qualified custodian is available, and it would explicitly let state-chartered trust companies serve as custodians, subject to due diligence and asset segregation.2425 SEC Chair Paul Atkins described the plan as a compliant pathway where none existed before.26 A 60-day comment period begins once the proposal is published in the Federal Register.29

The agency is acting without Congress. The CLARITY Act failed its Senate cloture vote 49–50 on September 15, so the SEC is using rulemaking to address specific problems one at a time.2125 That approach carries a risk: a future commission could reverse rules made this way.21 Coverage also highlights a scope limit. The rules reach only crypto assets that count as funds or securities, which could leave plain bitcoin holdings under a separate analysis.23 In a separate deregulatory move, FinCEN withdrew long-pending proposals on unhosted wallets and mixers on October 5.28

Banks are building custody services at the same time. Standard Chartered launched bitcoin and ether trading for professional-investor wealth clients in the UAE on October 14. The service runs in a closed loop, with the bank handling custody and settlement after approval from Dubai's VARA.5111 Two days earlier, the bank began custody of Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin through its DIFC branch. It also plans a collateral-mirroring arrangement with LMAX, under which tokens would stay at the bank while counting as trading margin. That arrangement still needs testing and approvals.55 Ripple also signed Meritz Securities as its fourth South Korean institutional partner of 2026, focusing on custody and tokenization.59

Banks and regulators are reaching the same conclusion: wider institutional adoption depends less on new products than on clear answers about who holds the keys.

Treasury companies slow down

Bitcoin treasury companies, the main corporate buyers of the past cycle, are clearly slowing. Strategy bought 250 BTC for about $21.5 million in the week to October 11, its smallest purchase of 2026. It paid an average of $86,194 per coin, above the prevailing market price.48 In the same week it spent $192.4 million repurchasing STRC preferred shares, nearly nine times its bitcoin outlay.45 Holdings now total 848,250 BTC at an average cost of $75,444, alongside about $5.5 billion in dollar reserves and cash.4345 TD Cowen kept its price target on the stock but cited dilution and financing obligations as limits on shareholder upside.48 Coverage also notes that some rivals, including Metaplanet, are sitting on deep paper losses.41

The trend is clear. Corporate treasuries are now managing their balance sheets instead of buying aggressively. ETFs and bank-custody channels, aided by the SEC's custody proposal, are positioned to provide steadier institutional demand. October's choppy flows show that this demand is still sensitive to macro conditions.
