A small consultancy's launch reflects a much larger change in search
On October 3, 2026, AI Geo Elite, a Miami-based consultancy, announced that its full Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) service is now open to businesses. The company says it is aiming at startups, SaaS companies and local businesses whose content does not appear in AI-generated answers.24 The announcement went out as a paid press release through the Getnews and PRNow distribution network and was republished across several syndicated news portals.123 It describes a company selling services. It is not independent reporting on results, and readers should weigh its claims with that in mind.
The launch matters less on its own than for what it shows about the market. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools now answer questions directly instead of sending users to websites. In response, a fast-growing industry has formed to help businesses get cited inside those answers. AI Geo Elite is one small part of that industry. Its offering is useful mainly as a clear example of how the sector describes itself.
What AI Geo Elite says it is selling
The firm's main argument is that being visible in AI search is a different problem from ranking in traditional search. Its release says an AI assistant gives one answer, built from content the engine has confidently categorized and judged authoritative. In the firm's view, more blog posts or more keyword-heavy writing will not close that gap.2 Instead, it says it works through entity clarity, structured data, semantic content architecture and voice-search readiness.23
The company names its target customers. These include SaaS businesses in conversational, high-intent query categories where being cited carries commercial weight. They also include Miami businesses that need content tied to their location and services, and retailers whose product pages need to work for direct-answer retrieval.1 The October release follows a September 11 announcement that expanded the firm's services into three areas: content signal quality, voice and conversational query optimization, and what it calls geographic precision, which uses geospatial AI and predictive analytics.8
The pitch is unusually frank about timelines. The firm says AEO "isn't a switch you flip" and that clients expecting a quick traffic spike will be disappointed. It describes the work as compounding, with trust in an entity building slowly over time.2 A later release, dated October 31, says the problem is hard to see. In that release, the firm says a site can show steady organic traffic and still be missing from AI answers, because standard analytics dashboards do not measure AI citation. It says ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot each retrieve content in their own way.7
The releases also use urgency. They claim citation patterns tend to settle early around established entities, which would make late movers harder to fit in.2 The releases offer no independent evidence for that claim. It is better read as a sales argument than as a proven finding.
Why the pitch is landing: the traffic data
This kind of sales message works because the effect on publisher traffic is well documented, even though studies measure it in different ways.
The strongest causal evidence comes from a randomized field experiment with 1,065 desktop Chrome users. When an AI Overview appeared, outbound organic clicks fell 39.8% and zero-click searches rose 34.5%. Clicks on sponsored results did not change.12 The researchers also found that more than 87% of AI Overviews appear in the top position, and that most of the click loss happens there.12 Pew Research Center found that users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when none appeared. Users clicked a source link inside the summary itself only about 1% of the time.14 Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through rate for top-ranking pages on queries that trigger AI Overviews, close to double the 34.5% it reported in April 2025.13
The numbers are not directly comparable. Pew measures how likely a user is to click in a session, while Ahrefs measures click-through for the top-ranked page on keywords that trigger an AI Overview. Some coverage has wrongly described the Ahrefs figure as an average traffic loss.16 Still, all the studies point the same way, and that agreement makes the conclusion hard to dismiss.
The damage is uneven. Chartbeat data reported in October found that small publishers lost about 60% of referral traffic over two years, medium publishers about 47%, and large publishers about 22%.15 Sistrix data shared with Press Gazette found health content was the most exposed, with AI Overviews replacing links 72% of the time. Tech, travel, lifestyle and money followed.19 DMG Media told the UK Competition and Markets Authority that click-through rates fell by as much as 89% for some searches.1118 Most recently, Digital Content Next reported a median 22% year-over-year fall in referred traffic among surveyed members in a 2026 study, up from a 10% drop in 2025.20
Google disputes much of this. Search head Liz Reid has said overall click volume has stayed "relatively stable".18 Google has also argued that the clicks it sends are higher quality, though it has not published figures to back that up.11 There are some signs of a plateau. One dataset found the zero-click rate fell slightly between December 2025 and March 2026, and Seer has reported early signs of stabilization.1516 Even so, the overall evidence favors the publishers' account.
Google's partial retreat and the legal pressure
Google's own actions suggest it sees a problem. In May 2026 it announced five changes to AI Overviews and AI Mode meant to send more traffic to publishers. These include a "Further Exploration" links section, labels for subscribed outlets and inline link context.13 The changes came as Penske Media pursued an antitrust lawsuit and the European Publishers Council filed a complaint with the European Commission.13 Google said in February that letting publishers opt out of AI Overviews would be a major engineering challenge.20 Recent coverage says publishers' legal challenges have stalled in court.18
Google's financial results also show the tension. In one quarterly report, revenue from Google Network, which comes from ads on partner sites, fell 4%, while Search revenue on Google's own results pages grew 19%.16 Answering more questions on its own pages appears to help Google while shrinking the outside web that supplies the content.
The optimization industry fills the gap
A new layer of vendors has grown up in this gap between Google and publishers. Market research firms agree the sector is growing fast. They disagree widely on how big it is. Dimension Market Research puts the AEO market at $160.9 million in 2026.28 Coherent Market Insights values AEO services at $1.25 billion for the same year.30 For the closely related "generative engine optimization" (GEO) category, 2026 estimates range from about $1.09 billion to $1.48 billion. MarketsandMarkets gives a far lower figure of $390 million for 2025.252227 Differences that large suggest the category is not yet clearly defined, and sizing it involves a lot of guesswork.
Practitioners also differ on whether AEO and GEO are separate disciplines. Directive Consulting says the two terms now describe essentially the same playbook.24 Other agencies present them as separate services and sell them together with traditional SEO.9 AI Geo Elite's claim that AEO is not just rebranded SEO is common across the sector.2
There is some data behind the claim that ranking and citation are coming apart. MarketsandMarkets reports that the overlap between Google's top-10 organic results and the sources cited in AI answers fell from about 75% in mid-2025 to between 17% and 38% in early 2026.27 A separate benchmark found that 83% of AI Overview citations come from pages outside the organic top 10.21 If those figures hold, a high Google ranking no longer guarantees a citation in AI answers.
Larger companies have moved in too. HubSpot launched an AEO tracking product in April 2026. Semrush expanded its AI visibility research to 126 million U.S. prompts. BrightEdge and Conductor added AI Overview tracking to their enterprise platforms.3027 Boutique firms like AI Geo Elite therefore compete with established software vendors as well as other agencies. One AEO market report lists unclear AI ranking algorithms and the lack of standard performance measures as the sector's main obstacles.30
The vendors also disagree on timing. One agency says GEO changes can show results within one to four weeks.10 Another says schema improvements can show up in three to six weeks, with steady citation presence taking three to six months.9 AI Geo Elite will not promise a timeline at all.2 An agency with a different commercial message says no reputable firm can guarantee placement in AI answers.9
The takeaway
AI Geo Elite's launch does not change the market. It is one of many similar announcements from a crowded field. Yolee Solutions in Pensacola, for example, announced an AEO service on the same day as AI Geo Elite's September announcement.8 Its diagnosis of the problem is still broadly sound. AI answer engines are taking clicks that once went to the open web, the evidence for that is now causal as well as correlational, and smaller sites are hit hardest.
The most useful point in AI Geo Elite's own releases is the measurement gap. Businesses whose analytics look healthy may be missing from the AI answers where more and more searches now end.7 The way the industry measures success is also changing. Being cited is becoming the goal, but a citation does not bring in a visitor the way a click did. For publishers whose business depends on visits, that difference matters most. Being named in an AI summary that only 1% of users click through is not a replacement for the traffic that has been lost.14
