What happened
Several new datasets agree on one thing about Google's AI-generated answers: a small group of user-generated content platforms, led by YouTube and Reddit, collects a large share of the citations. They do not agree on how large that share is, or which platform leads. At the same time, Google has opened a new pipeline for forums and social platforms to push content into its index faster 4. That makes the measurement question matter more.
Ahrefs' ranking of domains cited in Google AI Overviews puts YouTube first and Reddit second. Reddit holds an 18.5% mention share across 830,641 cited pages 1. A separate summary of AI Overviews data reverses the order, with Reddit at 21% and YouTube at 18.8%, and describes YouTube as closing the gap quickly 2. A third index, built from more than 680 million citations across five AI engines, puts Reddit at roughly 40% of Google AI Overviews and YouTube at about 19% 3.
The YouTube figure is fairly stable at around 19% across these analyses. Reddit's figure ranges from under a fifth to roughly two-fifths of citations, depending on who is counting.
Why the numbers diverge
The metrics are not the same thing. Ahrefs reports "mention share" and pages cited 1. The index of 680 million citations uses a "top-source share" and a multi-engine aggregate 3. The Bluefish data cited in another report measures the percentage of LLM answers that cite a platform at all 2. These are different questions:
- How often a domain appears among all citations
- How often it is the leading source
- How often it shows up somewhere in an answer
Any of these can produce a defensible ranking. None should be treated as interchangeable with the others.
The gap widens once you move beyond Google. In the Bluefish six-month analysis of LLM answers, YouTube rose from about 9% in mid-2025 to 16% in early 2026. Reddit fell from about 14% to 10% over the same period, a reversal of which platform led 2. The multi-engine index still names Reddit the top source on every major AI engine 3. It also notes that platforms differ in their secondary sources: Perplexity leans on NIH/PubMed, Quora and Britannica, while AI Overviews favor Wikipedia, Forbes and LinkedIn 3.
One piece of academic work cuts against the idea that UGC is taking over. A Washington University study of 55,393 queries, presented at the ACM Internet Measurement Conference, found that AI Overviews rely less heavily on user-generated content than traditional first-page results do 1. One report also notes that 86% of AI citations still come from brand-managed sources, which casts YouTube's growth as an addition to brand content rather than a replacement for it 2.
The case for Reddit and YouTube
The argument for why these platforms get cited is consistent across the sources. Reddit threads contain first-hand opinions, specific model numbers and discussion of trade-offs. That lines up with Google's own guidance calling for "first-hand" content and "unique points of view" 1. YouTube is described as the only serious video citation surface, and podcast transcripts feed into the same channel 3.
Markets have reacted to the shifting data. Reddit's stock reportedly dropped 9.3% after the report showing YouTube overtaking it in LLM answers 2. That is a notable reaction to a metric whose definition varies so much between studies.
Google's fast lane, with caveats
Google's UGC Fresh Data Program launched October 8. It lets approved forums and social platforms push content directly to Google, using OAuth 2.0 authentication and validated JSON-LD 4. Google states explicitly that acceptance does not guarantee the content will appear in Search. The documentation also never mentions AI Overviews or AI Mode, so it is unclear whether faster ingestion leads to more AI citations 4.
The economics of those citations remain difficult for publishers. Seer Interactive tracked 5.47 million queries and found AI Overview click-through rates fell to 1.3% in December 2025. They had recovered only to 2.4% by February 2026, still about 37% below baselines for results without AI Overviews 4. One report points to AI search traffic converting at 14.2% compared with 2.8% for Google 2. That suggests visibility in AI answers may be worth more per visit, even when there are fewer visits.
The takeaway
The reasonable conclusion is that UGC is a major, durable citation source in AI search, but its exact share depends heavily on how it is measured. Three AI Overviews datasets put Reddit anywhere from 18.5% to about 40% 123. Headline claims about which platform is "winning" are therefore partly artifacts of method.
For publishers and marketers, two points matter more than the rankings:
- Each AI surface draws on a different mix of sources 3.
- Google is building faster intake for UGC without promising where that content ends up 4.
Teams should track their citations per surface and per metric rather than relying on a single leaderboard.
