A distorted homecoming
Hot Chip have announced their ninth studio album, A Long Way From Kansas. Domino will release it on 8 January 2027.915 The 11-track record comes with a lead single, "Random Violence," which is a tribute to Keith McIvor, the Glasgow DJ known as JD Twitch of Optimo.114 The title borrows Dorothy's line from The Wizard of Oz, and the band's own framing ties it to the long trip home and the search for some normality.141
For a group that spent two decades making warm, carefully built synth-pop, the press language around this record is pointedly rough. Frontman Alexis Taylor calls the world the album was made in harsh, discordant, violent and depressing. He says distortion became a "watchword" for the whole project.1110 My reading is that this is a real change in sound, not just tidy promotional copy. The record hasn't been heard in full yet, but the band's statements, the label's description and outlets' early takes all point the same way.
What the record sounds like on paper
The album was recorded at Relax and Enjoy, the East London studio run by Joe Goddard and Al Doyle.9 Domino's materials describe notes that flay, loops that crunch into each other, and vocals that leave loose ends as each song mutates.1413 Consequence goes a step further and calls the new sound more distorted and punk-influenced, aimed at political unrest and a bleak world.9 That "punk" label is the outlet's own description, not the band's. Still, it fits Taylor's line that the backdrop of politics and "genocide" couldn't be avoided while they worked, even though, as he says, not every song is directly about those things.10
The other big change is how many people are singing. Taylor says Owen Clarke and Felix Martin both sing alongside him and Goddard, and that this is Martin's first time singing on a Hot Chip record. He adds that there's a choir and a lot of group vocals, which he describes as opening up the band's "interior world."154 Two guests join them: Gossip's Beth Ditto on "Me In Your Head" and Eddie Chacon on "The Garden."163 The full tracklist runs from "Stuck Around" and "Waiting Around" through "The Mask Is Slipping," "Splinter," "Secular Hymns" and "Crushing."2
More distortion and more voices could sound like they pull against each other. Read together, though, they suggest the same idea: when the world gets harsher, the band answers with more people in the room, not fewer. Domino's own pitch says this outright, calling the album tonally dark but sonically ecstatic and describing the dancefloor as a kind of home.14 That's marketing, of course. But it matches what the band members have said.
A requiem for JD Twitch
"Random Violence" is the emotional centre of the announcement, and every outlet treats it that way. Goddard says McIvor died in September 2025, a few months after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. He describes McIvor as a passionate music lover and a committed socialist, and says many of the lyrics come from his death and from memories of Glasgow's Sub Club, where the band met him about 20 years ago.843 Under the Radar's background on McIvor covers the rest: he co-founded the Optimo club night at Sub Club, which later grew into a musical project and a record label.2
The song opens with Goddard singing about friends telling stories of a man who spent his life sending songs into the world. Taylor then comes in with the line "You gave me something to believe in."1310 Consequence says the track sets violence against acts of kindness, mirroring the human connection McIvor encouraged.9 Doyle uses similar words when he describes the song's "human connection."1
Jack Cole directed the video. It features Boss Morris, an all-female progressive morris dancing group, and Doyle says the woodland spirits, cursed animals and wild dancers were inspired by Optimo's Espookio Halloween parties at Sub Club.1516 Putting English folk ritual next to a Glasgow club night is a smart choice. Both are communal and a bit strange, and both are about people coming together, which is the album's theme in miniature.
The band also backed the tribute with action. On 21 October they DJed with friends at Sub Club to honour McIvor, and Dork reported that tickets were free.167 Choosing that venue, rather than a launch party in London, gives the campaign a sense of loyalty to the club scene that shaped the band.
Where the coverage diverges
The reporting agrees on the core facts, but it differs on a few details, especially tour logistics. Every outlet has the European leg starting at Berlin's Astra on 26 February 2027 and ending at London's Exhibition White City on 12 March.216 The UK middle section is where they split. Consequence's list includes a Birmingham date at the O2 Institute and has Glasgow on 7 March and Manchester on 8 March.9 Under the Radar lists one Glasgow night on 8 March, Manchester on 9 March and no Birmingham show.2 The Spill Magazine lists two nights at SWG3 Galvanizers on 7 and 8 March, followed by Manchester on 9 March.13 See Rock Live also mentions a two-night Glasgow run.6 Since most outlets that copied the press release agree on two Glasgow nights and Manchester on 9 March, I'd treat Consequence's Birmingham listing with caution until the band confirms it.
Resident Advisor adds something no one else reports: South American dates for the rest of 2026. The same piece also gives the release year as 2026, which is clearly a typo given that every other outlet says 2027.3 As for what happened between albums, Pitchfork describes a 2025 reissue of the greatest-hits set Joy In Repetition.4 Dork, on the other hand, calls that collection the band's first best-of, which included a new track called "Devotion."16 Treble says the band also reissued three of their classic albums earlier this year. These accounts don't really contradict each other. Together they describe a band that has spent the gap since Freakout/Release in 2022 looking back at its own catalogue.9
Why it matters
The timing is the most interesting part. Hot Chip have just had a very visible, nostalgic year. They appeared with Oscar Isaac in the second season of Netflix's Beef, and they marked 20 years of The Warning in May, including an episode of Song Exploder.913 Treble placed The Warning on its list of the best albums of the 21st century. A band in that position could easily settle into anniversary tours. Instead, Hot Chip are following a year of looking back with an album described as their noisiest and least polished in years. I think that's the right decision.
The announcement also shows how spread out the members' work has become. Resident Advisor notes that Doyle, who also plays in LCD Soundsystem, has a solo album, Hollywood Saviour, coming on 20 November via DFA Records.3 Alongside the band's growing vocal line-up, that points to a group whose individual members are bringing more into it rather than drifting away.
The band is clearly treating the album as a physical product too. It will come out on a deluxe double gatefold LP with an extra 7-inch, a standard double LP, CD and digital. Early pressings have spot gloss and foil-blocked artwork by Scott King, and buying a pre-order gets fans access to the tour presale.1 The tour itself plays rooms like Paradiso and Le Bataclan before the big London show.15 That plan relies on a dedicated fanbase, which Myspace's mention of an earlier sold-out four-night run at Brixton Academy suggests the band still has.7
The reading
Based on the announcement, A Long Way From Kansas looks like Hot Chip trying to make bleakness into something people can share. The distortion reflects the outside world, the choir and the extra voices are the response, and the JD Twitch tribute grounds it all in a real loss and a real club. We won't know how well the songs deliver until January. Still, it's a more committed and less nostalgic opening than you'd expect from a band coming off its twentieth-anniversary year, and "Random Violence" makes a strong first argument for it.
