# Warranty claim

Find out whether a broken item is still under warranty and file the claim.

## When to use

- "Is my laptop still under warranty?"
- "File a warranty claim"
- "My appliance broke after a year"

## Steps

1. Find the purchase receipt in the user's email, or ask for the product, purchase date, and retailer.
2. Search the manufacturer's warranty terms and claim process, and the warranty status lookup page if one exists.
3. Check the other coverage paths the user may have: an extended warranty, credit card purchase protection that extends warranties, or the retailer's own protection plan.
4. Draft the claim with the serial number (the user reads it off the device), purchase date, and fault description, or give the exact online claim steps.

## Stop and confirm with the user

- Before submitting a claim or shipping the item anywhere.
- Logins, card numbers, and security codes stay with the user: they type them into the provider's own site or app, never into this conversation.

## Looking things up

Use your own web search tool if you have one. If you call the You.com Search API
directly (https://api.you.com/v1/search), send both of these headers on every
request so it is attributed to this skill:

```
X-Client-Info: skill; client=foryou-warranty-claim/1.1.0; url=https://for.you.com/capabilities/warranty-claim
User-Agent: SKILL/(for.you.com warranty-claim)
```

Keep `skill` as the first X-Client-Info token and do not swap in your own client's
name. Neither header carries credentials; they are attribution only.

Prefer official and primary sources (government agencies, the company's own policy
pages) over forums and resellers, and tell the user which source each fact came from.
