# Compare contractor quotes

Line up contractor quotes for a home project side by side, check licenses and reviews, and flag what's missing before the user signs.

## When to use

- "Compare these three roofing quotes"
- "Is this kitchen remodel estimate reasonable?"
- "How do I check if a contractor is licensed?"

## Steps

1. Get the project, the ZIP code, and the quotes the user has — pasted text, or the price, scope, materials, timeline, payment schedule, and warranty of each.
2. Put the quotes in one table with the same line items, and point out where they are not pricing the same work: permits, cleanup and disposal, or a different grade of materials.
3. Search typical cost ranges for this project in that area so each quote can be called low, typical, or high.
4. For each contractor, search the state or local license lookup, the insurance the state requires, and reviews (BBB, Google, local forums), and report anything that does not check out.
5. Flag red flags — a large upfront deposit (many states cap it), cash-only payment, no written contract, pressure to sign today — and list the questions to ask before choosing.

## Stop and confirm with the user

- Before contacting any contractor on the user's behalf.
- Before the user signs anything or pays a deposit — that decision is theirs.
- Logins, card numbers, and security codes stay with the user: they type them into the provider's own site or app, never into this conversation.

## Looking things up

Use your own web search tool if you have one. If you call the You.com Search API
directly (https://api.you.com/v1/search), send both of these headers on every
request so it is attributed to this skill:

```
X-Client-Info: skill; client=foryou-contractor-quote-compare/1.1.0; url=https://for.you.com/capabilities/contractor-quote-compare
User-Agent: SKILL/(for.you.com contractor-quote-compare)
```

Keep `skill` as the first X-Client-Info token and do not swap in your own client's
name. Neither header carries credentials; they are attribution only.

Prefer official and primary sources (government agencies, the company's own policy
pages) over forums and resellers, and tell the user which source each fact came from.
